Rays SS Wander Franco faces potential 5-year prison term
June 23 - Prosecutors on Monday recommended a five-year prison sentence for Wander Franco, the suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop who is charged with sexual abuse of a minor in his native Dominican Republic.
With closing arguments complete, a panel of three judges will begin deliberations and the presiding judge case said he will announce a verdict on Thursday.
Franco also faced charges of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor, stemming from a relationship he had with a girl who was 14 at the time. However, only the sexual abuse charge is being pursued, according to a release from the public prosecutor's office.
Franco's defense team, meanwhile, claims there is a lack of evidence and is arguing for the case to be dismissed altogether, according to ESPN.
The prosecutors also requested 10 years in prison for the victim's mother, who is accused of sexual exploitation of minors and money laundering for allegedly accepting money from Franco to consent to the relationship.
Franco, 24, was a rising Major League Baseball star in August 2023 when he was placed on administrative leave amid allegations he engaged in a relationship with an underage girl. He was moved to the MLB's restricted list in July and remains the subject of an MLB investigation.
Franco remains under contract to the Rays, who signed him to an 11-year, $182 million contract extension in 2021. He is not paid while on the MLB restricted list.

June 24 - San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. filed a lawsuit on Monday against Big League Advance (BLA), attempting to void a contract he signed as a teenage minor-leaguer that states he owes the company a share of his future earnings. According to the suit, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, the 26-year-old Tatis signed a deal with BLA in 2017 as a 17-year-old player that paid him $2 million in exchange for 10 percent of his future earnings. Per the contract with BLA, Tatis would owe the company $34 million after signing a 14-year, $340 million deal in February 2021. Per a press release from Tatis' legal team, the two-time All-Star is looking to hold BLA accountable for "exploitative, predatory business practices, which shamelessly push illegal loans on young, vulnerable athletes -- most from economically disadvantaged Latin American countries." The year after he signed the deal with BLA, Tatis was a top 10 prospect in baseball and debuted with San Diego in 2019. In a 2018 interview with The Athletic, Tatis said, "I'm not afraid. I'm not going to spend that money stupidly. You've got to be smart with your decisions, with what you're going to do." Now Tatis is aiming to protect younger players from "predatory lenders." "I'm fighting this battle not just for myself but for everyone still chasing their dream and hoping to provide a better life for their family," Tatis said in a press release. "I want to help protect those young players who don't yet know how to protect themselves from these predatory lenders and illegal financial schemes -- kids' focus should be on their passion for baseball, not dodging shady business deals." Tatis entered Monday's game against the visiting Washington Nationals hitting .268 with 14 home runs and 34 RBIs in 75 games. Ex-Padres prospect James Wood haunts former team in Nats' win
June 24 - James Wood homered and drove in four runs Monday night as the visiting Washington Nationals topped the San Diego Padres 10-6. Wood clinched Washington's first win over San Diego since June 2023 with a towering three-run homer off the right field foul pole in the top of the eighth to make it 9-3. It was the 22nd homer for Wood, a former Padre prospect who the Nationals acquired three years ago in an eight-player trade that sent Juan Soto the other way. Mitchell Parker (5-8) got the win, allowing six hits and three runs in six-plus innings with two walks and a strikeout. It was just the third win in 16 games for Washington and just its second road win in June. Stephen Kolek (3-3) absorbed the loss, permitting five hits and five runs (four earned) over 4 1/3 innings. Manny Machado got San Diego on the board in its half of the fourth with a solo homer to center, his 13th of the season. But the Nationals made it 6-1 in the fifth via Luis Garcia's RBI single off reliever Wandy Peralta and Bell's run-producing single. The Padres got a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Gavin Sheets, then closed within 6-3 in the seventh on Jake Cronenworth's leadoff homer to right-center, his sixth of the year. Bell added a solo homer to the second deck in left, his 10th, in the Washington ninth. Four-run eighth propels Angels past Red Sox
June 24 - The Los Angeles Angels broke open a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 9-5 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday night. Christian Moore's sacrifice fly drove in LaMonte Wade Jr. to put Los Angeles in front 6-5, and the Angels made it 7-5 when Garrett Whitlock walked Taylor Ward with the bases loaded. Travis d'Arnaud's two-run single extended the lead to 9-5. Whitlock (5-1) allowed all four runs in the inning. Boston issued 11 walks in the loss.
