World's best golfers continue to prep for Playoff opener at Southwind
MEMPHIS — He has arrived. World number one and a two-time major winner this year, Scottie Scheffler, the favorite at this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, is one of the 69 golfers who have arrived in Memphis for the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Names like Viktor Hovland, former Open Champion Brian Harman and Sam Burns, who was in the hunt at Southwind a year ago, finishing in a tie for fifth, all spent their Tuesday getting a look at the new look greens. The practice and preparation continues during Wednesday's Pro-Am before the swings start to count as FESJC tees off on Thursday. Every golfer in the field knows what it means to simply be able to tee it up in Memphis this week. 'It's always where you want to be. The start the FedEx Cup playoffs. I'm in good position heading into this year and really excited to be back here,' said Corey Connors. 'Love this golf course. So it's where you want to be.' 'Yeah, it's always exciting to come back here. It means you've had a good year and you got a chance to win the FedEx Cup,' Burns said. 'So it's always a good place to be.' More important than the money, the Top 50 players after Memphis move on to round two of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week at the BMW Championships in Owings Mills, Maryland. Stable LLC, lock horns with four rivals in Saturday's $250,000 Bison City Stakes at Woodbine.A 1 1/16-mile main track event that follows the Woodbine Oaks as the second leg of the Triple Tiara for 3-year-old fillies foaled in Canada, the Bison City has attracted a field of six, including Shifty and Winterberry. Shifty sports a 2-1-2 mark ($224,879 in career purse earnings) from eight engagements, which includes her first stakes success, a 3 ¼-length score in the 2024 Catch A bay comes into the Bison City off a runner-up showing, as the 2-1 choice, to stablemate and King's Plate contender No Time, in the Woodbine Oaks, contested on July 20.'Shifty is such an honest, hard-trying filly,' said assistant trainer Kathryn Sullivan. 'We were very pleased with her effort in the Oaks, going longer than she ever had.' Shifty debuted over the E.P. Taylor turf on July 4, 2024, and showed late gumption after a slow start to finish fifth in a field of winning her 3-year-old debut on May 11, she was third in the seven-furlong Fury Stakes, for 3-year-old fillies foaled in Canada, on June 7.'She came out of the Oaks doing great and we're hoping for another big effort on Saturday,' said Medaglia d'Oro out of the Elusive Quality mare Elusive Luci, Shifty was bred by Anderson Farm Ontario Inc. and sold for $350,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Grant is the groom. Winterberry was third behind stablemates No Time and Shifty in the Woodbine Oaks.'She is another filly who always shows up and she has really matured,' praised Sullivan. Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Ont. Inc., Winterberry was a $210,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland Association September Yearling 'Billy' Forde is the groom. The $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Tiara, is scheduled for 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf on Sept. 6 at W.R. Beasley won three of the first four editions of the Bison City: Silly Sara in 1954, Black Coyote in 1955, and Pink Velvet in 1957. Mark Casse has won a record seven runnings of the race, including last year with Stormcast. We will get our first look at the 2025 NFL Draft class in game action, as well as free agents who changed teams during the offseason. Here are our top five things to watch for during this weekend's slate. Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter playing both sides of the ball: Hunter is one of the most hyped-up rookies in recent memory, thanks to his expected attempt to play both offense and defense. Jacksonville has listed him as a starting WR and a second-string CB on its depth chart. It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars' coaching staff manages his workload. How he performs at each position will likely dictate where he gets the most snaps. Debut of Titans QB Cam Ward: Tennessee used their No. 1 overall draft pick on Ward, committing to him as the future of the franchise. He's had his ups and downs throughout training camp, but how he performs in preseason will give us a more accurate look at his abilities. We're a long way from that, but a positive start in his debut would ease some nerves. Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler compete for Saints starting QB role: New Orleans is not tipping its hand as to who has the advantage, and has even promoted Jake Haener as in the mix. Haener is likely a longshot, but Shough and Rattler seem to be on pretty even footing. Whoever plays best in their game on Sunday should get the upper hand, but the battle could last through all three preseason matchups. Ben Johnson leads new-look Bears offense: Johnson was the hot name in this year's head coaching cycle, and he is now paired up with 2024 No. 1 overall pick QB Caleb Williams. Chicago remodeled its offensive line, and added a couple of new rookie weapons in tight end Colston Loveland and WR Luther Burden III. The pressure will be on Johnson to succeed quickly and get the most out of Williams and the Bears' offense. ESPN purchases NFL Network — what to know The NFL and ESPN have announced a non-binding agreement that ESPN will acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL, including RedZone and NFL Fantasy. In exchange, the NFL will receive a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. More terms of the agreement: NFL Network will be owned and operated by ESPN and fully integrated into ESPN DTC. NFL RedZone will still be available on NFL+, but ESPN will distribute it on traditional television. NFL Fantasy Football will merge with ESPN Fantasy Football. ESPN's platforms will license an additional three NFL games per season to air on NFL Network. The NFL will continue to own and operate its retained media businesses such as NFL Films, NFL+, the NFL Podcast Network, the NFL FAST Channel, and the official sites for the league's 32 clubs.
