Pochettino on rejecting Pulisic offer for friendlies: 'I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin'
SAN JOSE, Calif. — U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said he wouldn't allow Christian Pulisic to dictate which games he would be available for, explaining why he rejected the star's offer to play in a pair of friendlies ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup but not the tournament itself.
'I am the head coach. I am not a mannequin,' Pochettino said Saturday, a day ahead of the Americans' opener against Trinidad and Tobago.
Pulisic told the U.S. team he was willing to play in the recent games but wanted to skip the tournament to rest after playing about 120 matches over the past two years for AC Milan and the national team.
The Americans lost the friendlies, 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland, and were dealt their first four-game losing streak since 2007. Pulisic told CBS Sports Golzazo he respected Pochettino's decision to exclude him but 'I didn't understand it.'
'Players not need to understand or not understand,' Pochettino said. 'Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan. Because if not, OK, we invert — we swap the position, no? That is obvious. ... The most important thing is that we explain why we decided not to include in the two friendly games. And then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand.'
Pulisic, 26, is the top American player with 32 goals in 78 international appearances. Pochettino compared Pulisic's situation to that of defender Sergiño Dest, who reported to training camp in Chicago ahead of the friendlies and then was dropped to continue regaining fitness in his recovery from a torn ACL.
'It's up to us after to assess, to analyze if you need rest or not need rest because we have a group of professional performance doctor and athletic coaches in the federation that can assess you,' Pochettino said.
The coach said he understood Pulisic's request but wouldn't alter his decision to have one roster for the entire June/July camp.
'Our decision was to go with the players who wanted to play,' Pochettino said.
Pochettino rejected Pulisic being labeled the top American player.
'You say the best player. Yes, is a good player, of course, but he needs to perform,' the coach said. 'If he perform well, and he's the best, it is normal he is going to have a place in the national team ... But it's not because ... I want to be, I want to play, I want to do this, I want to do that.'
Pochettino said it was possible midfielder Tyer Adams, who has turf toe, could be available Sunday.
'I hope on the end of this journey together we can leave a trophy that's for sure well deserved, first for the players and then for the country and for the fans to recover the belief and recover that good energy and the good feelings,' he said. 'That is important. In one year that we have an amazing opportunity in the World Cup, being a host of the World Cup.'

Sachin Tendulkar Pens Emotional Father's Day Post: 'Was A Man With...'
Sachin Tendulkar honoured his late father, Ramesh Tendulkar, on Father's Day with a heartfelt post. Sachin Tendulkar took to social media to honour his late father on Sunday with a special post on Father's Day. The Master Blaster shared a picture of himself along with his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, who breathed his last in Mumbai on 19 May 1999. 'Before the applause, before the centuries, there was a man with a pen and a gentle smile, believing in me before the world did. I carry his calm, his grace, and his love in every step," read Sachin Tendulkar's post. Master Blaster Sachin had posted about his father earlier in May as he remembered his late father on the day he passed away. Sachin posted on Instagram: 'It's been 26 years since you left us, and your love still lights my way. Miss you, always." advetisement Sachin Tendulkar has often spoken with deep affection and respect for his father, whom he called his 'first guru." Just days after his father's passing, Tendulkar delivered an emotional and unforgettable 140* against Kenya in the 1999 World Cup, dedicating the match-winning knock to his late father. During the 1999 ODI World Cup, Tendulkar had to return midway through India's campaign to attend to his father's funeral. The batting maestro returned to hit an emotional century against Kenya and celebrated the milestone by looking upwards in the sky, remembering his late father. 'It started in 1999. During the World Cup, I lost my father. I came back to India for a couple of days for his funeral and that suddenly changed me overnight," Tendulkar said. 'I went back to play the World Cup to join the team. Life changed after that. I wanted my father to be around and to see a number of things that were to happen in my life," Sachin Tendulkar had recalled earlier this year at the BCCI Naman Awards. 'From that moment on, I started showing my bat to my father. So anything good that happened in my life, I would show that to my father first and celebrate with everyone," he had added. Inter Milan's Mehdi Taremi Stuck In Iran Amid Conflict, Expected To Miss FIFA CWC 2025
Last Updated: Taremi, who had been on international duty for Iran, couldn't get a flight out of Tehran to join Inter in the USA for their first game, amid the conflict between Iran and Israel. Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi is set to miss the Italian side's opening fixture at the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup after the 32-year-old was stranded in Tehran amid the conflict between Israel and Iran. Taremi, who netted in Iran's 3-0 win over North Korea in the World Cup qualifier between the sides last week, couldn't get a flight out of Iran to join his Inter teammates in the United States of America. Taremi remained in Iran for a few days longer compared to the rest of the Inter internationals in order to attend an Iranian award ceremony. The forward was presented with the 'Toopa Award', the first edition of the Iranian Golden Ball, at the gala. Inter will look to turn the page on their disappointing UEFA Champions League Final outing, in which they were hammered 5-0 by the champions, PSG, at the 32-team group and knockout event in North America. The revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 was kicked off by Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, who were held to a goalless draw by Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly in the opener at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday. Miami were without full-back Jordi Alba and midfielder Yannick Bright in the opener, as Javier Mascherano's team relied on the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner to make a difference. The Argentine came close multiple times, including a free kick that hit the wrong side of the net, and a brilliant curling effort in second-half added time, which was tipped over the bar by the Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. Miami's goalkeeper Oscar Ustari prevented disappointment for his team in the first half by saving a penalty from the Egyptian player Trezeguet. First Published: June 15, 2025, 09:11 IST

Pochettino on rejecting Pulisic for freindlies: 'I'm the head coach, not a mannequin'
SAN FRANCISCO: United States coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his decision to omit Christian Pulisic from recent friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland on Saturday, saying he alone was responsible for choosing his squad. AC Milan star Pulisic has been at the center of a simmering controversy over his request to be excused from US duty in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicked off on Saturday. Former US international players including Landon Donovan have criticised Pulisic's decision, questioning his commitment to representing the United States. Pulisic hit back at his critics on Thursday, revealing that while he had asked to skip the Gold Cup he had been willing to play in the warm-up games -- only to be denied by Pochettino. The winger said that he had accepted Pochettino's decision but did not "understand" it. Asked about his decision to leave out Pulisic on Saturday, Pochettino said it was not for players to pick and choose which games they wanted to play in. "He explained why he only wanted to be involved in two games," Pochettino said of Pulisic. "And I respect and I understand him. I understand him. But I don't need for him to understand our decision. Because my position is, I am 53 with a lot of experience in football." "If he performs well and he is the best, it's normal he's going to have a place in the national team. It's not because a player [is saying]: 'I want to play.' 'I want this.' 'I want that.' I signed my contract with the federation and I am the head coach -- I am not a mannequin," Pochettino added. The USA open their Gold Cup campaign against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.
