USA Goalkeeper Matt Turner Back in MLS, Re-Joins Revs on Loan From Lyon

Fox News6 days ago
Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as the U.S. national team's goalkeeper.
Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026.
One of the reasons that Turner was displaced by New York City FC's Matt Freese as the U.S. starter at goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in June and July was that he hadn't played consistently at the club level for France's Lyon.
Turner, 31, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup.
Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016.
He last played for New England in 2022, posting a 53.3% save percentage over five starts.

Guessand says he jumped at chance to join Aston Villa after sealing move

Evann Guessand said he "didn't think twice" when offered the chance to sign for Aston Villa after completing a move from Nice on Friday. The Ivory Coast forward will reportedly cost Villa an initial £26 million ($35 million) with a further £4.3 million in add-ons. Guessand scored 13 goals and registered 10 assists in all competitions as Nice finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season. The 24-year-old bolsters Villa's attacking options after the sale of Jhon Duran in January to Al-Nassr and the departures of loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, who played a starring role in the second half of last season. "When I heard the club wanted me I didn't think twice," Guessand said. "I'm ready to give my all. Every game, every kick, every minute." Villa have had a quiet transfer window until now, signing only back-up goalkeeper Marco Bizot and defender Yasin Ozcan, who has been loaned to Anderlecht. The club were sanctioned by European governing body UEFA in July for breaching financial regulations. Unai Emery's men, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season, begin their campaign at home to Newcastle next weekend. kca/jw/ea

Braintree heading to Little League World Series after walk-off win over New Hampshire

The boys of summer from Braintree are heading to the Little League World Series. Team Massachusetts punched a ticket to the prestigious tournament held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with a thrilling walk-off win in extra innings over Bedford, New Hampshire, in the New England Region Tournament championship on Thursday night. Braintree's team has been a formidable force this summer, remaining undefeated and not allowing a single run in the regional tournament. That is, until they faced New Hampshire. Both teams were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Braintree's Frankie Fasoli scored from third base on a throwaway infield error by New Hampshire. While Fasoli's mad dash to home plate was the highlight of the game, the performance of pitcher Coleman Gouthro, who came on in relief of Fasoli in the third inning, can't be overlooked. The hard-throwing righty allowed just one unearned run on two hits in six innings, while striking out six batters. The victory was celebrated by fans who packed Braintree's Southside Tavern to watch the regional championship game. The excitement in the town was palpable as the team secured its spot in the World Series. 'Great coaches, great team, great camaraderie. They know how to play well, they play well together,' said Melissa Jones, who reflected on the community's pride in the team's achievement. Braintree teacher Alison Joice added, 'They are an awesome group of kids. They work hard and they play hard and they're awesome and we love teaching them!' Before knocking off New Hampshire, Braintree crushed Maine, 15-0, and defeated Vermont, 10-0, in regional play, which was held in Bristol, Connecticut. The run to Williamsport is the longest in Braintree American's program history. Braintree will represent New England and the Bay State in Williamsport in their opening round game of the World Series against South Carolina, the winner of the Southeast Regional tournament. Braintree and South Carolina are scheduled to play on Thursday, Aug. 14. The World Series tournament is a double-elimination format. The team told Boston 25 News that they will depart Bristol for Williamsport on Friday morning. Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.
