WRU: Leighton Davies appointed new chief commercial officer
Currently WRU's chief operating officer, Davies has been instrumental in establishing robust business processes and a solid financial foundation.
He will assume his new role later this summer, with a replacement for his current position yet to be recruited.
Abi Tierney, WRU chief executive, said: "We are delighted that Leighton has accepted this new challenge in such a pivotal role for Welsh rugby.
"It is a key position for us as we continue the process of professionalising and further commercialising ourselves to meet the challenges faced by all of Welsh rugby as part of our five-year One Wales plan."
Davies, a member of the Professional Rugby Board, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role.
"I am really excited to be taking up this new role," he said. "Welsh rugby possesses a huge amount of unrealised potential and this is what directly attracts me to this position.
"The game is undoubtedly going through a tough time, not just in Wales, but globally, but I'm hugely excited about the potential of our new strategy and plans."

Calls grow to bring back professional cricket to North Wales
Senedd members Gareth Davies, who represents Vale of Clwyd, and North Wales MS Sam Rowlands visited Glamorgan County Cricket Club in Cardiff for talks with the club's senior management about expanding the sport across Wales, making it accessible to young people, and reintroducing professional matches to North Wales. Glamorgan last played home fixtures in Colwyn Bay in 2019, before the pandemic forced all matches to be held at their Sophia Gardens ground in 2020 and 2021. The club has not returned to North Wales since. Mr Davies, also the shadow cabinet secretary for culture, tourism, sport, and North Wales, said: "It was an absolute pleasure to visit Glamorgan County Cricket Club at their stunning grounds in Sophia Gardens. "As the only Welsh county cricket club, they are truly committed to expanding the sport across Wales, and it was a real eye-opener learning just how neglected the sport has been." During the meeting, Mr Davies and Mr Rowlands emphasised the lack of investment in cricket facilities in North Wales. Mr Davies said: "There's been a total lack of investment in cricketing facilities in North Wales despite the region producing the lion's share of young cricketing talent. "We need to see the Welsh Government stump up the cash to ensure the sport is passed on to the next generation." He also said he is hopeful that with collaboration between stakeholders, professional cricket could return to North Wales in the near future. Both MSs raised concerns about the decline of cricket education in schools, which they attributed to a lack of investment from the Welsh Government. They noted that many schools have dropped cricket from the curriculum, forcing young talent to look for opportunities in England. However, they welcomed news that a growing number of promising players are emerging from North Wales, underlining the need for targeted investment in the region. Glamorgan currently runs a school outreach programme to introduce children to cricket, but limited funding means it is mostly confined to South Wales. Mr Rowlands said: "As chair of the Senedd's Cross-Party Group on Tourism I am always keen to attract even more visitors to North Wales and have called on the Welsh Government to do more to encourage major sporting events to be held in North Wales. "Recently, I expressed my disappointment at the loss of county cricket and under-20s international rugby, which were often a regular occurrence in North Wales. "They attracted thousands of spectators during their time and it does not seem right that people in my region have to travel hundreds of miles to South Wales to see major sporting events."

Wrexham AFC unveil Patagonia-inspired third kit for 25/26
The Reds are set to compete in the EFL Championship for the season ahead, having enjoyed three consecutive promotions. Today (July 31), the club, along with Macron and United, have revealed the club's 2025/26 third kit - a striking tribute to the Welsh community in Patagonia on the 160th anniversary of the first settlers' arrival. Inspired by the flag of Y Wladfa, the Welsh settlement in Argentina, the new design celebrates the enduring cultural ties between Wales and Patagonia - home to the largest Welsh-speaking community outside of Wales. The kit launch is accompanied by a new short film from Wrexham AFC and United, featuring two choirs - one perched on a cliff in Wales, the other in Patagonia - singing 'Yma o Hyd' ('We're still here'), a Welsh folk anthem of resilience and pride. You can watch that here... For Y Wladfa. Our new 3rd kit sponsored by @united. Celebrating 160 years since Welsh people first moved to Patagonia. 🔴⚪ #WxmAFC It's a powerful visual of voices joined across continents, echoing the connection between the two communities. The collaboration draws inspiration from United's REUNITED documentary, featured in Welcome to Wrexham Season 3. The film followed Patagonians with Welsh heritage as they travelled to Wrexham for the first time, deepening a bond that now lives on through this kit. Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson said: "This new third kit is a powerful tribute to our shared heritage with the Welsh community in Patagonia." He added: "Through its celebration of Y Wladfa, it honours a 160-year bond rooted in resilience, identity, and pride - all values that continue to shape Wrexham AFC today. As we look to the future, we remain deeply connected to our past." Based on the colours of the Patagonia flag, the new shirt features dragon outlines within the blue Argentinian stripes, a Welsh dragon on the nape and the words 'Don't forget where you came from' on an internal tape around the hem. As well as referencing the opening titles to Welcome to Wrexham, it is a reminder that our Patagonian Welsh cousins will always have a home in the 'Land of our fathers'. READ MORE: The collar of the shirt is a white crew neck edged in red, as are the sleeve cuffs. The front features the Macron Hero and Wrexham AFC crest, both applied in heat-transferred silicone, and the United logo across the middle. Sleeve sponsors HP and back-of-shirt sponsors Meta Quest are also featured. The third kit is completed by white shorts with light blue stripes along the thigh edges and red details, and by socks featuring horizontal light blue and white bands, finished with a white top edge and a central red horizontal stripe. Macron CEO Gianluca Pavanello said: "The kit, conceived as a tribute to Y Wladfa, completes a Game Set for Wrexham AFC that we are truly proud of and that we hope will inspire the team to many achievements in the upcoming season. 'At Macron, what really sets us apart in designing kits for our partner clubs is the freedom to start from a completely blank canvas. With the home, away and third kits for 2025/26 season, we feel we have truly captured the spirit and identity of the club, blending tradition with innovation, all while keeping quality at the heart of everything we do.' United AIrlines chief advertising officer Maggie Schmerin added: 'We're excited to see the emotion of Reunited live on in this new kit and short film. 'Connecting people is at the heart of what we do and the symbolism of the Y Wladfa flag on the kit and the two choirs in the film is a beautiful way to honor the deep ties between Wales and Patagonia."

Wrexham's Thomas hits the heights to win prestigious title
Wrexham AAC ace Walley claimed victory at the English senior championships, which took place in Birmingham. His effort of 5.05-metres was enough to make sure of success in the pole vault. Next up, he is back in Birmingham this weekend for the UK championships. 'I was really pleased,' admitted Walley, a huge Wrexham AFC supporter. 'I won the Welsh title a couple of weeks back. I went to the English championships as a guest. 'I didn't get quite as high as I have been jumping, but it was a good competition.' It was a close competition between Walley and William Lane, as they both cleared 5.05m. 'We were a fair bit above the rest of the field and it was neck and neck,' added Walley. 'It went down to me having less failures.' Looking ahead to this weekend's huge challenge, he said: 'It's the UK championships back in Birmingham. It will be a tough one, but I'm up for it.' Also in winning form was Spencer Jones. He took part in the BMC regional event, in Aberdare, where a personal best of 17-19.90 made sure he won the U13 boys' 3k walk. Adding to the Wrexham good news stories was Amanda Bailey, at the Dolgellau five-mile road race. She was first W50 in a new record time of 36.20, which saw her crossing the line 22nd overall.
