Bonmati puts Spain into Euro final after extra-time win over Germany
Zurich
Aitana Bonmatí netted with aplomb in extra-time to send world champions Spain into the Euro 2025 final following a 1-0 win over record eight-times winners Germany on Wednesday.
Spain will meet holders England in Sunday's final in Basel, a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final won 1-0 by La Roja. It is a first Euro final for the Spanish women.
Montse Tomé's side dominated possession as usual in Zurich but Germany, who somehow beat France on penalties in the last eight having been down to 10 players after 13 minutes, defended stoutly and were dangerous on the break.
The contrast in styles meant the 90 minutes ended 0-0 before world player of the year Bonmatí produced a rare moment of class with a clever dummy. Her effort from a tight angle then went in at the near post.
Bonmatí said: 'I feel proud because we deserve it. We suffered.' The 113th-minute goal was tough on Germany keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who has shone this tournament but said she should have done better while expecting a cross.
'The disappointment is huge, we believed until the last second. One small mistake, one loss of focus and it is so bitter,' Berger told ARD.
'I take responsibility, the near post needs to be covered. I'm sorry so for the team, not just for me.' Bonmatí added: 'We had studied Berger, who made certain movements and sometimes left spaces at the near post.' Germany were without the suspended Kathrin Hendrich following her ponytail pull against France. Sophia Kleinherne replaced her in a back three, while wing back Carlotta Wamser returned from suspension and Sara Däbritz came in for suspended midfielder Sjoeke Nüsken.
Spain made one enforced change from the 2-0 quarter-final win over hosts Switzerland as centre back María Méndez filled in for the suspended Laia Aleixandri.
'No blame,' says Germany coach Klara Bühl fired the first good chance wide for the Germans, watched in the Letzigrund stands by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Spain striker Esther González then tested Berger, who starred against the French, and the keeper made another smart save.
The tournament favourites, who had scored 16 goals in winning all their previous four matches in Switzerland, upped the ante just before the break and Irene Paredes headed against the post before Berger again denied González.
Half-time came at a good time for the Germans, who had at least kept Bonmatí and previous world player of the year Alèxia Putellas fairly quiet up to that point.
Bühl had three further big opportunities in the second half - including a deflected effort clawed off the line by Cata Coll at the death.
Otherwise the ball was mainly up the other end, although La Roja struggled to carve out clear-cut chances despite the multitude of short passes.
Extra-time was largely a non-event until Bonmatí, who had meningitis at the start of the Euros, stylishly struck - assuming she meant it at Berger's near post.
'We imagined things differently,' Germany coach Christian Wück said.
'There is no blame, she is world player of the year. It can happen.
We have played a really good tournament.'

Bayern Munich happy as Diaz shows his potential in debut
dpa Munich Luis Diaz didn't score in his Bayern Munich debut but he showed enough potential to create a little bit of pre-season euphoria at the Bundesliga champions. 'Luis Díaz is someone who loves football and always has a smile on his face. That's what we need,' midfielder Joshua Kimmich said Diaz' debut in Saturday's 2-1 win over Olympique Lyon. Diaz arrived on Wednesday from Liverpool for a reported €75 million from Liverpool ($87 million). It was the only good summer news so far for Bayern after Florian Wirtz snubbed then and went to Anfield instead, and VfB Stuttgart are so far unwilling to let Nick Woltemade join Bayern. In addition, Jamal Musiala is out injured for many months. Immediate impact The 28-year-old Colombian Diaz came on for the second half, set up the penalty which Michael Olise converted for the opening goal, and also had three chances to score himself. 'I had some good chances. Unfortunately I couldn't score, but I hope I can score in the next game. My goal is to help the team and win titles,' Diaz said. 'I feel very comfortable, I'm happy to be here and to have played my first game. We put in a good performance and were in control of the game.' Robbery comparison Diaz had a lot of pace on the left and together with the as lively Olise on the right brought back some momories of Bayern's famous winger duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Sporting director Christoph Freund didn't want to get carried away, warning: 'Don't believe the hype, don't believe the drama.' But he added that 'we can expect many scorer points' from Diaz and Olise, who also netted Bayern's second against Lyon. Kane and Kompany impressed Striker Harry Kane was also duly impressed by Diaz, saying: 'Luis Díaz did a great job today. We've only had a few training sessions together so far, but he looks hungry and eager. 'You can tell he's happy to be here. He plays with a smile on his face. Today you could see how effective he is in the final third and we're going to need him this season, so I'm delighted he's here.' Coach Vincent Kompany, who only started pre-season training with the team earlier in the week after a post-Club World Cup holiday, was also satisfied. 'Luis Díaz is full of positive energy. We've already seen his qualities and abilities in training. He will help us,' Kompany said. Pre-season countdown Bayern kick off the season in a fortnight with the German Super Cup match against domestic cup winners VfB Stuttgart before starting their Bundesliga title defence on August 22 against RB Leipzig. 'It's an atypical preseason period - a short holiday, short preparation and then we're right back to it. But we're up for it. We don't have much time. We want to be physically ready for the first games,' Kompany said. Freund said that midfielder Joao Palhinha is set to leave Bayern after one year with little playing time, with Tottenham Hotspur the reported destination. He also said that midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic could be back in training in 3-4 weeks from an eye socket fracture. Bayern face Spurs on Thursday and Swiss club Grasshoppers on August 12 in their other pre-season games, and Freund was upbeat overall.

Hopefully I will be back – Hamilton after Budapest nightmare
PA Media/DPA Budapest A dejected Lewis Hamilton said he will 'hopefully' return for Formula One's next race - after he cryptically claimed 'there is a lot going on in the background that is not great' following the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest ob Sunday. A day after Hamilton described himself as 'absolutely useless', and called on his own Ferrari team to replace him, the seven-time world champion started 12th and finished in the same position at the Hungaroring, a lap behind winner Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc was fourth in the other Ferrari. Fronting up to TV cameras after the conclusion of the 14th race of his Ferrari career which has so far failed to live up to its pre-season hype, Hamilton was asked to reflect on his post-qualifying comments. 'When you have a feeling, you have a feeling,' he told Sky Sports. 'There is a lot going on in the background that is not great.' Asked if he had fallen out of love with racing, Hamilton replied: 'No, I still love the team.' Hamilton then headed for his session with the print media. Quizzed on how he felt a day on from being eliminated in Q2 - a performance made all the more harrowing after Leclerc took pole position, he replied: 'Same.' Put to him that his remarks suggesting that Ferrari 'need a new driver' would worry his fans, the British driver again replied: 'Same.' Asked if he had anything else to say other than 'the same', Hamilton said: 'I have got nothing else to say.' The sport now breaks for four weeks for its mid-season shutdown. The next race takes place in the Netherlands on August 31.
