Justin Steele's post-surgery timeline and outlook, as he watches the first-place Cubs

New York Times28-05-2025

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs anticipate All-Star pitcher Justin Steele will return to their rotation at some point during the first half of the 2026 season, potentially next May or June, depending on how he recovers from major surgery on his left elbow.
An ideal version of the 2025 Cubs would have had Steele lined up to start a playoff game in October. That possibility was dashed in April, when he underwent a season-ending procedure to repair his flexor tendon and ulnar collateral ligament. In his absence, the first-place Cubs have consistently found different ways to win games and reshape their pitching staff, demonstrating resilience and creativity.

Wanting to feel that energy and looking for a break from the monotony of his rehab program in Arizona, Steele is planning to make regular visits to Wrigley Field to support his teammates and check in with the club's staff.
With a black brace on his left arm, Steele met with reporters in the home clubhouse before Tuesday's 4-3 11-inning win over the Colorado Rockies, publicly addressing his future for the first time since the operation.
'Any time you get an MRI, you're crossing your fingers, just hoping it comes back clean,' Steele said. 'They saw some stuff getting a little bit worse from the last few times I've gotten an image of it, so it made sense to go in there and figure out what it was.
'Obviously, it sucks. But as soon as you find out the news, you start processing it, trying to figure out what the next steps are, what's the best plan of action for me and my family and the team.'
Steele underwent Tommy John surgery as a minor-league prospect in 2017, which became part of his long journey to Chicago and the gradual development that turned him into a National League Cy Young Award contender. Though this was not classified as a second Tommy John procedure, that rehab experience will be valuable.

'There's a different mentality once you've been through it,' Steele said. 'You kind of know what the tunnel looks like. I remember when I was going through TJ, it was like: 'Am I going to throw the same? Is the ball going to come out different?' There are so many thoughts that are running through your mind. With this one, I can tell already it's going to be the same when I get back. If anything, it's going to be better.'
In the meantime, Steele has found a new routine with his wife, Libby, and their son Beau, sitting back and following what could be a magical season on the North Side.

'Obviously, I'd like to be out there playing, but it's fun being a fan,' Steele said. 'Libby and Beau and I schedule our days around what time the game's starting. We make sure we're all on the couch. He's got his toys in front of the TV, ready to play. It's been fun to watch.'

Volvo's New Seat Belts Will Adapt to Your Body

As a country, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says we're doing a pretty good job at wearing our seat belts — the national use rate was 91.2% in 2024. And it probably helps that the NHTSA has widely publicized its Click It or Ticket campaign encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up. However, seat belts are not always ideal for every body size and shape, and they aren't always a great fit. The lap belt and shoulder belt are supposed to be taut against the pelvis and diagonally across the rib cage to protect internal organs; a good fit is highly dependent on height, weight and seat position. Volvo now has an answer to that issue with a new multi-adaptive safety belt that not only adjusts to each passenger's body type but to traffic variations as well. Volvo — the company that perfected the modern three-point safety belt way back in 1959 — will include these new seat belts on the upcoming all-electric EX60. The Superset technological building blocks that underpin the EX60 are what allow this safety belt tech to work.

AT&T Debuts a New Discounted Senior Mobile Plan, and 55 Counts as a 'Senior'

AT&T has introduced a new phone plan for seniors, offering mobile service at a discount for customers 55 years old and up. (Yes, Gen X, that's you -- or some of you, at least.) While it lacks the fancier features of pricier plans offered by the carrier, it's also far more affordable than its former senior offering. Carriers typically offer several plans to satisfy a range of customers, from the frugal to those that are willing to pay for every perk and bundled streaming service they can get. But plans targeting older Americans are often more bare-bones offerings, offered at lower prices to appeal to customers on fixed and limited incomes. AT&T's new AT&T 55 Plus plan is the most affordable it's offered in years. In exchange, the AT&T 55 Plus plan is pretty basic. For $40 per month for a single line (or $35 per month per line with two lines), you'll get unlimited voice calls, texting and data in the US, Canada and Mexico, and though AT&T's senior plan page indicates it has "5G access included," there's no clarity on which circumstances will enable high-speed data downloads and uploads on the senior plan. The plan also has 10GB of hotspot data per line per month, which is more generous than some other carrier offerings on our best senior plans list, along with a maximum 720p (SD) streaming speed for video. The plan also provides access to AT&T's free ActiveArmor app that blocks spam calls. Previously, AT&T offered a slightly discounted senior phone plan at $62 per month that was only available to customers living in Florida. Verizon retains a similar Florida-only senior plan. T-Mobile has several plans for seniors, from an older and basic Essentials Choice 55 plan starting at $45 per month up to Experience Beyond w/ 55 Plus starting at $85 per month and offering all the perks and extras of T-Mobile's other plans, including a five-year plan price guarantee, streaming services and satellite service beyond T-Mobile's network. It's worth noting that every carrier plan's listed lowest price requires customers to sign up for autopay -- otherwise, the plans are more expensive every month. Customers must also prove their age by submitting an identification document to their carrier. Later this summer, AT&T will also offer a bundle combining two lines of AT&T 55+ with the customer's choice of either AT&T Fiber or AT&T Internet Air fixed wireless access internet, according to the carrier's blog post.
