Android might soon trust your smartwatch to help verify your identity (APK teardown)

Google recently introduced a feature called Identity Check on Android 15 and later devices, designed to add extra protection from phone theft when you're outside of predefined trusted locations. Now it looks like Google is working on an upgrade that could make the experience a little smoother — by allowing your smartwatch to play a role in verifying your identity.

An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
According to strings of code we spotted in version 25.29.31 of the Google Play Services beta, Identity Check may soon recognize a connected smartwatch as a kind of trust signal. They suggest that, if your watch is nearby and connected, your phone may treat that as a sign that you're still in control. This could potentially reduce how much you need to authenticate with biometrics while not in one of your safe spots.
This wouldn't necessarily remove the need for your fingerprint or PIN entirely, but it could strike a better balance between convenience and security for users who already unlock their watch with a PIN and keep it strapped to their wrist. It's a small touch that could make Android's theft protection feel a bit less intrusive in everyday use.

As an in-progress feature, we don't yet know if this addition to Identity Check will eventually roll out in a public release or if it will work exactly as we have assumed here. With Android's security tools continuing to evolve, smartwatch security integration seems like a logical next step, as long as the mugger doesn't swipe your wearable at the same time as your phone.

Google Pixel 10 tipped for Qi2 magnetic charging — what we know
Google's Pixel 10 range could allow for Qi2.2 charging, even if you don't have a case, according to new leaked images. The images in question come from Evan Blass (via Android Police) and appear to be Google's official renders for the Made by Pixel event on August 20. There's a lot of information on the phones in the post, including an image of what appears to be the Pixel 10 with a magnetic charger attached to the back. This isn't the first time we've heard about Google including a magnet in the phones, as a recent leak about the Pixel 10 range getting heavier hinted at the same. The leak also mentioned an in-house range of magnetic chargers and stands called "Pixelsnap," which could be what we're seeing in the image. On top of the image of a magnetic charger, Evan Blass's post also lists several hardware specs for the upcoming devices. While we can't claim these are the final specs, they do match other rumors we've seen in the last few months. The Pixel 10 is listed as coming with a 6.3-inch Actura display, the Tensor G5 chip, a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide. While a battery size isn't given, the post does say that the Extreme Battery Saver feature could allow the phone to maintain a 100-hour battery life. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10 Pro is stated to feature a 6.3-inch display, while the Pixel 10 Pro XL is listed with a 6.8-inch display, the same as we saw in the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Both phones are listed with the Tensor G5, a 50MP wide-angle camera and a 48MP Ultrawide with Macro focus. In terms of the battery, the phones could also manage the same 100-hour battery life listed with the Pixel 10. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is stated to feature a 6.4-inch outer display and an 8-inch inner display. That would match the inner screen size of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but fall just short of Samsung's 6.5-inch outer display. The post also mentions an advanced triple camera system, which other leaked specs have reported to include a 48MP main camera, a 10.8MP ultrawide, a 10.5MP telephoto with 5x zoom and two 10MP selfie cameras. Interestingly, the Pixel 10 Pro fold could only manage a 72-hour battery life with the Extreme Battery Saver. As with any leak, it is worth taking these images with a pinch of salt, but Evan Blass is a well-known source, so it is worth taking note. With that said, we don't have long to wait for Google's event, so keep an eye on our Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro Fold hubs for all the news, rumors and leaks as we hear them.

NordVPN joins the scam call fight on Android

It flags suspicious numbers using metadata, without listening to or storing call content. The feature works on any Android device with the NordVPN app and Premium plan. Scam calls aren't slowing down and are getting smarter in many cases. While most modern smartphones already do a decent job of flagging suspicious numbers, NordVPN thinks it can do better. The company has just launched a new Scam Call Protection feature for Android phone users in the US. In a blog post published this week, NordVPN explained that the tool analyzes call metadata to detect potential fraud before you even pick up. If it spots something suspicious, it flashes a warning message next to the incoming number. The feature is included with NordVPN's Premium plan and works through the existing app, whether connected to a VPN or not. Once enabled in the Threat Protection tab, it runs quietly in the background. If you've used a recent Pixel or Samsung phone, this might all sound pretty familiar. Google offers built-in AI-powered scam detection on Pixels, including mid-call warnings that alert you if the conversation starts to resemble a scam. Samsung uses a system called Smart Call that can identify spam calls and even block them outright. NordVPN's approach differs in a couple of ways. Unlike Google's tool, it doesn't process any audio — just metadata. And while Samsung's protection is tied to its own phone software, NordVPN's version works on any Android device running its app. It's also designed with privacy in mind, storing no call content and keeping detection on-device. The company says future updates will add features like caller ID for unknown numbers, better categorization (such as finance or healthcare), and even the option for you to report suspicious calls. It also plans to bring Scam Call Protection to iPhones and other countries. You might not see this feature as worth the NordVPN Premium price alone, but with scam call losses topping $2 billion in the US last year, the layer of defense is probably welcome for those already on the plan. Zuckerberg shares AI 'personal superintelligence' vision after spending billions on top talent
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a letter outlining his vision for "personal superintelligence" Wednesday, giving investors a glimpse into his artificial intelligence strategy ahead of Meta's second-quarter earnings report. The company has shelled out billions of dollars hiring top AI researchers and engineers in recent weeks, and Wall Street will be listening for what Zuckerberg has to say about the spending spree. Zuckerberg did not outline specific products or applications that Meta plans to build in his letter, but he said he views superintelligence as a tool for "personal empowerment" over automation and efficiency. "This is distinct from others in the industry who believe superintelligence should be directed centrally towards automating all valuable work, and then humanity will live on a dole of its output," Zuckerberg wrote. Meta has been racing to keep up with competitors like OpenAI and Google. In June, the company announced plans to invest $14.3 billion into Scale AI and hired its CEO Alexandr Wang.
