Luke Littler fires back at rival claiming he is heading for early retirement
Luke Littler says early retirement talk is 'crazy' after Nathan Aspinall suggested the Nuke could hang up his arrows in the not too distant future.
The 18-year-old has already achieved more than most every will in darts, as the reigning world champion bids to defend his Premier League title on Thursday night in London.
The teenager is yet to claim top spot in the world rankings, where Luke Humphries still resides, but with UK Open and Grand Slam titles also under his belt already, it appears only a matter of time.
Such has been his incredible success at such a young age that Aspinall can see Littler sailing off into the sunset pretty soon, having become tired of travelling and with enough money in the bank to retire early.
'I think he'll be off in about five years,' world number nine Aspinall told talkSPORT. 'He's 18. He does a lot on YouTube, he's good mates with [YouTuber] Angryginge. I can see him going down that path, in my opinion.
'He's already getting fed up with playing and travelling all the time, and he's only been doing it 12 months.
'I don't think he'll be around for 16 years, let alone winning 16 world titles. If he does, fair play to him. But I can't see it.'
Aspinall rowed back on predicting Littler retiring in just five years, but cannot see the Nuke still competing past 33 years old.
'Even now Luke could retire and never have to worry about money again in his life, it's as simple as that,' he Aspinall.
'He will always have exhibition work and I hope he doesn't [retire]. He's coming out of his shell a bit at the moment.
'I just believe if he's fed up of travelling now, he's only just got a girlfriend, when he does have a child and stuff like that and he's got £30m sat in his bank, does he really want to travel to Wigan on a cold Tuesday morning? Probably not.
'Maybe not in five years but certainly I don't think he'll be around at my age, so that's 15 years. I don't think he'll be here at 33.'
The prediction was put to Littler and he does not agree, saying retirement is the last thing on his mind at the moment so early in his career and with the opportunities in front of him.
'I know I've heard that, I don't know where he's got that from – don't worry, I'll be here in 10 years,' Littler said.
'It's crazy to even think about retiring. If I win 16 world titles like Phil (Taylor), I'll retire, but I'm not even thinking about retirement at the minute – the money is there to be won, especially the World Championship but not only that everything has gone up.
'It is all about what you're feeling and I'm sure I'll be here for a long time.'
The next opportunity available to Littler is to win the Premier League for the second time on Thursday night after lifting the trophy on debut last year.
The Nuke takes on Gerwyn Price in the semi-finals of the play-offs at The O2 while Humphries and Aspinall meet in the second contest of the night. More Trending
The winner will win £275,000 on Thursday night, with Littler looking to land the huge amount for the second year on the spin.
Sky Sports' Wayne Mardle reckons it is going to be another Littler vs Humphries final, just as it was 12 months ago.
'Over the longer format, I do see Luke and Luke reaching the final,' said Mardle. 'If they both hit peak then it could be absolute carnage.
'I do believe that they meet in the final. No offence to Price and Aspinall, I just think they are better, especially over the longer format now.'

Manchester United launch transfer bid for Brenford forward Bryan Mbeumo
Manchester United have made a first formal approach for Bryan Mbeumo but have seen their bid rebuffed by Brentford. United are understood to have offered in the region of £45m for the Cameroonian international, with a further £10m in performance-related add-ons, but Brentford are holding out for more than £60m. Mbeumo has only a year left on his contract which gives United some leverage as they look to prise away the 25-year-old, who scored 20 goals and made seven assists in the Premier League last season. But Brentford consider Mbeumo a key player and are prepared to trigger an option in his contract which would extend his stay at the Gtech Community Stadium by a further 12 months in order to keep him. Manager Thomas Frank said last month that Mbeumo's sale was possible but that he would be 'expensive' for potential suitors, who also include Newcastle United. Mbeumo suits United's preference for proven Premier League talent who are yet to reach their peak, following the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Mbeumo also appeals for his versatility, being able to play across the forward line, and for his outstanding fitness record, having played in all 38 of Brentford's league games in two out of the past three seasons. With Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony all expected to leave the club this summer, United need to acquire more attacking options. Mbeumo has the potential to fit into Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 system either as a striker or as one of two No 10s in support. United also want to sign a goalkeeper, a wing-back and a midfielder, but first need to offload a raft of players in order to free up headroom within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

Russell Martin says I've won people over at EVERY club I've been at – and tells Rangers fans we can win trophies NOW
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSELL MARTIN has revealed Rangers were ALWAYS his first choice. And that's despite the fact his agent told him to play DOWN his interest in the role. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Russell Martin has been unveiled as the new boss at Rangers Credit: PA Martin, 39, was confirmed as the Ibrox club's new head coach this morning. The former Norwich City, Scotland and Gers defender had been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December 2024 after their disastrous Premier League run. Martin decided to take a break after his dismissal from the south coast club and passed up on opportunities to immediately return to the dugout. A few months later, Philippe Clement was sacked by Rangers and Martin knew straight away that he wanted the job. He's had to bide his time, first as Barry Ferguson came in as interim boss and then as the club created a shortlist that included Davide Ancelotti and Steven Gerrard. In that time, Martin became linked with the Leicester City job. But it wasn't enough to change Martin's mind that Rangers were the outstanding club for him. And it just so happened that he was the outstanding candidate for both chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Martin said in his first press conference today: "I'll be really honest, there were a few opportunities since I left Southampton, early on. "Then I had a bit of a break, I was keen to get back into things around February and March time. What next for Rangers after American takeover is confirmed? "I had some tentative approaches but I wanted to reflect on what I've learnt as a coach, a leader and that time was important. "As soon as the Rangers job came up, this was the one I really wanted. "I wanted it because of the expectation, the size of the club and what it means to people. "Rangers is something completely different to anything else in football and I felt that when I was here as a player. "That comes into my mind too, that the one thing that hurt me when I look back on my career is that it didn't go well here. "I'm desperate to show a different version of myself here than I did previously. "So with all that in mind I was really honest from the outset that I wanted to be the Rangers manager and that this was my first choice. "My agent kept saying to me to play my cards close to my chest but I was really open and honest and now I'm delighted to be here." Martin told fans how he wants his team to play but knows his main priority is to win. And, he believes he can turn the Light Blues into title challengers this season. He said: "We've managed three clubs and the teams were all really different, but we had the same concept of the game. "We wanted to be aggressive on the ball and without it. You can't have one without the other. "But I've used different formations, shapes and personnel. "We are here to WIN and we'll do that in the best way we possibly can. "I think we can have a team that is better, wins more points, wins more games. And competes, really competes to win trophies." Some Rangers fans are lukewarm on Martin's appointment to say the least. And to those sections of the support, Martin delivered a personal message - insisting that he's won fans over before at EVERY club he's been at. He said: "To the fans, I have to win. I don't think I've been the number one choice at any club I've been at. "At MK Dons to go from a player to become a manager is a bit of a surprise to the fans. "At Swansea they were being linked with all sorts, they had lost in the play-off final then we turned up from League One. "At Southampton the same, they had just been relegated from the Premier League and I'm sure there were loads of names linked with the job. "But by the time I've left every club I've felt a real connection with the fans, they are right behind us, and definitely the players and the playing staff. Hopefully this will be the same. "And I hope the fans judge me on this moment, not on my playing career here, because that was very different." 2 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Wrexham transfer target gets his wish after Ryan Reynolds makes 'aggressive' claim
Wrexham transfer target gets his wish after Ryan Reynolds makes 'aggressive' claim Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have received an update in their bid to sign a Premier League star following their recent promotion Wrexham's co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have received an update on their bid to sign Tom Cairney (Image: Getty Images ) Wrexham's aim of signing Fulham skipper Tom Cairney have hit a snag, despite the North Wales club's strong interest in bringing the player to the Racecourse Ground. The Red Dragons, under the ownership of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have been linked with Cairney over the last month. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is anticipated to have significant financial support in the summer transfer window to strengthen his team after their promotion from League One. It was reported in May that Wrexham had tabled an attractive financial offer to Cairney as a top transfer target. However, Fulham have thrown a spanner in the works by offering the 34-year-old midfielder a new deal to remain at Craven Cottage. Cairney, who has two Scotland caps to his name, featured in 25 Premier League matches this past season and is currently considering his future. After netting a goal in Fulham's win over Brentford last month, Cairney shared his eagerness to stay at the club with BBC Match of the Day. Speaking about his contract situation, he said: "Nothing is sorted yet. Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it's not. In football, sometimes things go to the last minute and hopefully it's not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend." Fulham boss Marco Silva also revealed his desire to retain a key player. "I think he is going to be with us and I hope it is the ambition to have him with us next season," he said. "He knows what I think about it. He's a very good footballer and I know how we can use him." He said: "We're coming to win. I can't give you a dollar figure, but I can tell you that we are going to be as aggressive as we can possibly be while being mindful of sustainability. We have a stadium to revamp, but will still maintain its character and culture."
