Message from eastern states in President's ‘At Home' invite to Independence Day guests

The eastern states are the focus of around 450 invites being sent this year by Rashtrapati Bhawan for the 'At Home' to be held on August 15 to mark the 79th Independence Day. The invite box has been curated in a way that the paintings and other artifacts can be used independently by the invitees as souvenirs.
Not only the invite but the menu for the event also bears a stamp of the region with dishes such as litti-chokha, mochar chop, aloo-matar chop, dahi-bada, aloo dum and ghoogni being included in the list. Desserts will include chhena poda from Odisha, gur sandesh from West Bengal and anarsa from Jharkhand.
The 500-odd guests at these events include the PM and his Cabinet, diplomats from various missions, senior officials and eminent personalities.
The invitation kits have been carefully curated to showcase the unique heritage and creative excellence of the four eastern states, officials told The Indian Express. 'Every element reflects the skill and imagination of the artists of the region be it the hand-crafted box made of woven grass, the reusable bamboo photo frame, the exquisite folk paintings, or the specially designed block-printed stole,' they said.
The invitation kits have been put together by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, in collaboration with over 100 artisans, mostly women, from the four states. While nine Madhubani artists from Bihar and 15 bamboo artisans from Jharkhand worked from NID Bengaluru campus, the others worked from their respective villages.
The 'At Home' event at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Republic Day had a southern flavour, showcasing art and culinary delights from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Those in the know say this tradition has been started keeping with President Droupadi Murmu's interest in showcasing the cultural diversity of the country.
According to an official, the idea behind the August 15 invite is to showcase both popular and lesser-known art and craft forms from the four states. For instance, the main box carrying the invite, woven from the golden-hued sikki grass, reflects the delicate artistry of rural craftswomen from Bihar, said the official.
The choice of craft form is also symbolic. The openable frame carrying the printed invite is crafted by tribal artisans from Jharkhand, where bamboo weaving is deeply rooted in tradition. The invite takes the symbolic form of a door, representing the welcoming spirit of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official said.
The frame has hand-painted Madhubani motifs and houses four paintings typical of the four eastern states. 'Its design allows it to be transformed into a reusable tabletop photo frame, merging tradition with utility,' said the official. The four paintings include Tikuli art, an 800-year-old folk painting style from Patna; Pattachitra, which is practised by the Patua community of Medinipur, Bengal; Talapatra Chitra, the palm leaf scrolls of Odisha; and Paitkar painting, an old tribal scroll tradition from Jharkhand's Amadubi village.
The tussar silk stole has been specially designed and block printed by hand to depict artistic elements common to folk paintings of the region, in a subtle tri-colour theme. Traditional motifs such as 'matsya', 'kamal', 'basant', mirror the rhythms of nature, time and life.

New Delhi: In a clear and stern warning to Pakistan from the ramparts of Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said terrorists and those providing them safe haven will be treated alike and that Indian armed forces will deliver a "crushing" response to the enemy in case of any future misadventure. Delivering his address on the country's 79th Independence Day, Modi, referring to Operation Sindoor, said the Indian military punished the enemies beyond their imagination and that India will no longer tolerate Islamabad's "nuclear blackmail" and will respond appropriately. The remarks came days after Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir's threat of using nuclear weapons. The prime minister also justified New Delhi's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) following the Pahalgam terror attack as he described the over six-decade-old pact as "unjust and one-sided", asserting that "blood and water" will not flow together. Explaining the impact of Operation Sindoor, Modi said Pakistan is still "sleepless" and that the devastation in that country has been so huge that every day brings new revelations and fresh information. India responded to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 with several punitive diplomatic and economic measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor to target terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, triggering four days of hostilities that ended with an understanding between the two sides on May 10. "Our nation has endured terrorism for many decades. The heart of the country has been pierced time and again. Now, we have established a new normal: those who nurture and harbour terrorism, and those who empower terrorists, will no longer be seen as separate," he said during his 103-minute address. "They are all equal enemies of humanity, with no distinction between them." Highlighting India's "new normal" in dealing with cross-border terrorism, Modi said the armed forces accomplished something that had not happened in decades as they reduced terrorist headquarters to dust and turned terror infrastructure into ruins in response to the Pahalgam attack. "I feel great pride that today I have the opportunity to salute the brave warriors of Operation Sindoor from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Our courageous soldiers punished the enemies beyond anything they could have imagined." New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday broke into verse to drive home the message that this was the right time to become self-reliant and work towards 'Samriddha Bharat.' "Parishram main jo tapa hai, usne hi itihaas racha hai (The one who has worked hard, is the one who has created history)," Modi said. The Prime Minister made an impassioned call for 'Samriddha Bharat' by making the country 'aatmanirbhar' (self-reliant) in fields ranging from manufacturing of fighter jet engines to electric vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI). PM Modi raises pitch for ‘Samriddh Bharat'
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gave a clarion call for making a "Samriddh Bharat" by becoming self reliant in fields ranging from fighter jet engines to energy and Artificial Intelligence, as he announced a task force for next generation reforms, GST changes as big gift for Diwali, and a state-of-the art defence shield dubbed "sudarshan chakra." Modi's consecutive 12th Independence Day speech was focused on the theme of "aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance) at a time India and the world is facing growing US protectionism, as he highlighted the rising global selfish interest. "We should not waste our energy on shortening the line of any country. We have to make our line longer with full energy. The world will acknowledge our mettle if we can do it. (kisi doosre ki lakeer chhoti karne ke liye apni urja hamein nahin khapaani hai. Hamein poori urja ke saath hamari lakeer ko lamba karaa hai. Hum agar apni lakeer lambi karate hain to duniya bhi hamara loha manegi.)," Modi said in his 103-minute address from the ramparts of Red Fort on the country's 79th Independence Day. Citing his 25 years of experience as the head of a government, he said, "If we choose this path, then no selfish interest will ever be able to entrap us." Modi's longest Independence Day address for any prime minister was peppered with several announcements, including a national deep water exploration mission for self-reliance in energy and a high-powered demography mission to deal with the "serious crisis" of demographic changes effected by infiltrators. His sweeping call for "swadeshi" (Made in India), self-reliance and innovation in a gamut of sectors, including semiconductors, social media, fertiliser and pharma, came amid a strain in the country's ties with the US, with President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian imports to a whopping 50 per cent after singling out India for purchase of Russian oil to pressure it on trade. Sporting a saffron turban, Modi, however, made no direct reference to the issue as he doubled down on his emphasis on self-reliance and "swadeshi". The task force on reforms will make time-bound recommendations for adapting India to become developed by 2047, he said. "It is the call of the hour that we need not fret in the times of crisis but should work to improve our abilities and accomplishments," he said. Indian manufacturers' mantra should be "daam kam, dum jyada" (less price, better quality), he added. India can do it, he said noting that toy producers have begun exporting after he had in a 'Mann ki Baat' episode called for boosting domestic production and the need for stopping their import. The prime minister likened his call for "Samriddh Bharat" (prosperous India) to the freedom fighters' goal of "Swatantra Bharat" (independent India).
