What is vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient essential for maintaining healthy bones, supporting immune function, and promoting overall well-being. It is produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight and can also be consumed from animal-based foods such as salmon, cod, and egg yolks.
Vitamin D and ageing
The recent controlled trial revealed that vitamin D supplementation helps to maintain telomeres, the protective caps found at the ends of chromosomes that shorten during aging and are linked to the development of certain diseases.
'VITAL is the first large-scale and long-term randomized trial to show that vitamin D supplements protect telomeres and preserve telomere length. This is of particular interest because VITAL had also shown benefits of vitamin D in reducing inflammation and lowering risks of selected chronic diseases of aging, such as advanced cancer and autoimmune disease,' co-author JoAnn Manson, MD, principal investigator and chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, said in a release.

This means it delayed biological aging by nearly three years. The shortening of the telomeres is also linked to increased risk of many age-related diseases.
'Targeted vitamin D supplementation may be a promising strategy to counter a biological aging process, although further research is warranted,' the researchers noted.

Studies have also found that a low level of vitamin D increased the risk of infections and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The app identifies arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats, early signs of heart failure, indicators of coronary artery disease and heart valve abnormalities. Siddharth Nandyala's motivation stemmed from his desire to use AI to help people and revolutionize the healthcare system. In a bid to speed up scientific research and enhance institutional autonomy, the Centre has revised financial ceilings under the General Financial Rules (GFRs) for procurement of scientific equipment and consumables, ANI reported on Friday. The Finance Ministry notified that vice-chancellors, directors, and academic institutions under specified departments and ministries will now be allowed to make non-Government e-Marketplace (GeM) purchases with relaxed limits and fewer procedural constraints. The move is aimed at reducing procurement delays and giving research institutions greater operational flexibility. According to the new rules, institutions can procure scientific instruments and consumables worth up to Rs 2 lakh without needing quotations — a significant increase from the earlier Rs 1 lakh limit. Purchase committees can now approve procurements up to Rs 25 lakh, up from the previous Rs 10 lakh cap. In another key reform, vice-chancellors and directors have been empowered to approve global tenders for procurements up to Rs 200 crore. The Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir is the highest bridge in the world and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. The project is part of the 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), which was approved in 2003. One of the major contributors to the construction of the engineering marvel is Dr G Madhavi Latha , a professor at the Indian Institute of Science ( IISc ) in Bengaluru. She was involved for 17 years in the Chenab Bridge project as a geotechnical consultant. They innovated in real time based on geological conditions such as fractured rocks, hidden cavities, and varying rock properties, which were not evident in early surveys. The team made complex calculations and design modifications to work around the actual rock mass conditions they found during the construction. Latha's contributions included advice on the design and placement of rock anchors to improve stability. She has recently published a paper in the Indian Geotechnical Journal's women's special issue titled 'Design as You Go: The Case Study of Chenab Railway Bridge.' The paper describes how the design of the bridge has evolved continuously, with the overall structure, location and type being the only constants to suit the geological conditions of the site. About Chenab Bridge The Chenab Bridge, described as the "biggest civil-engineering challenge faced by any railway project in India in recent history' by the government is built at a cost of Rs 1,486 crore. The 359-metre bridge is taller than the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres. It is set to improve connectivity in the Kashmir valley.
