
Google Play Store Warning—Find And Delete All Apps On This List
Here we go again. A list of malicious apps has just been published and smartphone users are being urged to root out and delete any still on their devices. The latest report outs more than 350 apps responsible for more than a billion ad bid requests per day.
This latest report comes courtesy of Human Security's Satori team, which says it has 'disrupted IconAds, a massive fraud operation involving hundreds of deceptive mobile apps that hide their presence and deliver unwanted ads.' this app campaign has been under investigation for some time, but is growing its viral presence.
Satori says this 'highlights the evolving tactics of threat actors,' and that the scale of threats such as this are similar to BADBOX 2.0, the major IOT threat flagged by the FBI and Google, in which millions of smart TVs and other devices
Here is the list of IconAds issued by Human; and here is the list of previously known apps flagged by other researchers before this latest report was published.
This AdWare follows on the HiddenAds threat, but on a much larger scale. The malware takes over devices with unwanted fullscreen ads, generating revenue for its handlers. It even changes app icons top avoid detection and removal.
Global IconAds campaign
'While these apps often have a short shelf life before they're removed from Google's Play Store,' Sartorial says, 'the continued new releases demonstrate the threat actors' commitment to further adaptation and evolution.
Google has now deleted all of apps in the report fromPlay Store, and users with Play Protect enabled will be protected from those apps. But apps are not automatically deleted from devices, and so you should do this manually.
In Satori's technical report, it warns that such is the scale of this operation it deployed a dedicated domain for every malicious app, which helped the team compile their list.
'These domains consistently resolve to a specific CNAME and return a specific message; this means that while the domains were different, they very likely shared the same back-end infrastructure or second-level C2. These and other unique parameters allowed Satori researchers to find more of these domains and associate them back to IconAds.'
The team also warns that the app obfuscation was highly deceptive. In one instance, an app 'used a variation of the Google Play Store's own icon and name. When opened, it automatically redirects into the official app while working in the background.'
Satori says 'the IconAds operation underscores the increasing sophistication of mobile ad fraud schemes. Ongoing collaboration across the digital advertising ecosystem is essential to disrupting these and future fraud operations.'

I compared Gemini to Google Assistant on two Wear OS watches. The results weren't even close
Joe Maring / Android Authority About a month ago, Google started doing something long overdue for Wear OS: it finally began replacing Google Assistant with Gemini. As imperfect as it may be at times, Gemini is a really powerful tool. More importantly, Google Assistant on Wear OS has been showing its age for a while now. I've been testing Gemini on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Classic for a little over two weeks. In addition to using it for daily tasks, I've also been comparing it side by side with Google Assistant on another watch. Simply put, the difference between Gemini and Google Assistant on Wear OS isn't even close. Do you have a Wear OS watch with Gemini? 0 votes Yes, I bought a new Galaxy Watch 8 with Gemini built-in. NaN % Yes, my existing Wear OS watch got the update. NaN % No, my Wear OS watch doesn't have Gemini. NaN % No, I don't have a Wear OS watch. NaN % Gemini is already leagues ahead of Google Assistant Joe Maring / Android Authority I spent some time comparing Gemini on the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic to Google Assistant on the Pixel Watch 3, and within the first couple of questions I asked both assistants, it became immediately apparent just how much more capable Gemini is. Thanks to smoke from the Canadian wildfires, the air quality index (AQI) in Michigan has been bad lately. As such, outdoor exercise isn't always a good idea. I asked Gemini and Google Assistant, 'Is it safe to run outdoors with the current air quality near me?' Gemini found the exact AQI for where I live in Michigan, with an explanation that people with respiratory issues should avoid or limit their outdoor activity. What was the Google Assistant's response? A simple but unhelpful 'Sorry, I didn't understand.' Off to a great start! Joe Maring / Android Authority Okay, let's try something else. Next, I asked, 'What time am I seeing Weapons on Friday?' Gemini pulled from Google Calendar to tell me I'm seeing the movie at 6:40 pm, whereas Google Assistant gave me another 'Sorry, I don't understand.' Google Assistant did eventually show the calendar entry, but only after I specifically asked it, 'What's on my calendar for Friday?' That ability to speak to Gemini more naturally may not sound like a big deal on paper, but in practice, it can be hugely convenient. Switching gears to a more basic Google Search question, I asked both watches, 'Do the Lions play the Bills in the 2025 season?' Gemini told me that (sadly) the Lions and Bills aren't facing each other during the 2025 NFL season. Google Assistant, once again, didn't understand the question. Joe Maring / Android Authority Even when Google Assistant does provide an answer to these types of questions, it's not as helpful as the one Gemini offers. In another test, I asked both smartwatches, 'Who is the lead actress in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer?' Gemini provided a concise answer, whereas Google Assistant offered an unnecessary explanation of the movie's plot. The answer was there, but it was also accompanied by a lot of extra fluff. There's no doubt that Gemini is a worthwhile upgrade compared to Google Assistant. For basic commands, such as asking about the weather, controlling smart home devices, and setting timers, Gemini and Google Assistant work almost identically. But it's when you step beyond those ultra-simplistic commands that Gemini shines. Whether it's the ability to better understand the context of specific prompts (like the Weapons example) or find answers to more complex questions, there's no doubt that Gemini is a worthwhile upgrade compared to Google Assistant. How Google can make Gemini even better on Wear OS Joe Maring / Android Authority That all said, Gemini isn't perfect. Although objectively better than Google Assistant, Gemini still has room for improvement. Among all the things I'd like to see improved, I think the first place Google needs to start is with answer accuracy. Just like on the mobile app and desktop site, Gemini on Wear OS is quick to provide an answer to something, but that answer isn't always correct. For example, I asked Gemini, 'What time is Weapons playing at Celebration Cinema on Friday?' It confidently listed showtimes for 2:17 pm, 5:15 pm, 8:15 pm, and 9:40 pm (plus 6:55 pm and 10:00 pm IMAX showings). On the surface, that answer seems fine. However, when I cross-checked it with the movie theater's website, I realized it was flat-out wrong. Despite my specifying showtimes for Friday, Gemini gave me showtimes for Thursday (and hallucinated the IMAX ones). While that's the only thing that's 'broken' with Gemini on Wear OS, there are some other things I'd like to see added/changed to make it even better. Joe Maring / Android Authority The first is a more robust UI for Gemini. After you ask Gemini a question, you can ask follow-up questions within the context of your current conversation — for example, asking 'When do the Lions play next?' followed by 'Who is their quarterback?' The problem, however, is that each new answer takes over the entire display with no option to view your previous questions/answers within that conversation. The current UI works well for the smaller screen real estate of a smartwatch, but I'd love the ability to have a more traditional Gemini interface, like the one available on the Android app. I've also noticed that questions you ask Gemini on Wear OS don't appear on the Recent chat page on the Gemini app and website. This isn't a deal-breaker, but I'd love the option to have them show up there. My last request is a simple but important one: offline commands. It makes sense that Gemini needs to be connected to my phone for an internet connection to look things up on Google Search. However, why does it also need that to set timers, start a stopwatch, or create a reminder? Some basic offline commands like this would go a long way, and I desperately hope it's something Google is working on. So long, Google Assistant Joe Maring / Android Authority Even with those imperfections, Gemini on Wear OS has been an overall positive experience. Is it perfect? No. But is it a worthwhile upgrade over Google Assistant? Without a doubt. While I'm not using Gemini on my smartwatch for the same extensive queries I use Gemini on my computer for, the freedom to get an answer to virtually any question on my wrist — and the ability to ask those questions more naturally than before — is pretty incredible. Gemini is rolling out now to numerous smartwatches from OnePlus, Samsung, Google, and other brands. I'm experimenting with AI in my 70s. I've had to adapt to new technologies my entire career — those who embrace change survive.
One day in the early nineties, I read a Time Magazine article about this thing called the internet. It seemed to show a lot of potential, so I bought a book about it — that's what you did back then when you wanted to learn something. Before long, I was on a dial-up connection, meeting people from across the planet on the web. I didn't work in tech. I practiced law for most of my career, but I've been an early adopter of new technology throughout my life. I retired in 2020, after 30 years of working in law, so I was comfortably out of the workforce when ChatGPT was released in 2022. At the time, some people were aghast and predicted an imminent robot uprising. Meanwhile, I was eager to start experimenting with it. I now use AI nearly every day as my assistant and advisor, but I don't have to integrate it into a workplace. Some professionals are nervous that this latest technological revolution will upend their careers, but my years in the workforce taught me that those who embrace change survive. I was never one to shy away from technological advancements When I entered the legal profession in 1982, typewriters were on the verge of being phased out, and I was part of a wave of young lawyers who, unlike the partners we worked for, knew how to use a keyboard. The advancements kept coming. Word processors became document assembly systems. Law books and law libraries became vestiges of a bygone era. At every juncture, a change would be too much for some of the older attorneys, and they'd retire. Being mid-career, I didn't have that option. I tried to embrace change faster than my competitors and reap the advantages of beating them to the punch. I once taught myself about databases and built my own. It was time-consuming but paid off handsomely in the end. By my retirement, I had automated my timekeeping, accounting, case tracking, and document creation. When creating simpler estate plans after talking with clients, I could sometimes finish the documents faster than the client could make it to the parking lot. AI tools have made my retirement easier My attraction to new workplace tech didn't go away just because I retired. When I first got ChatGPT, I played around with it like a new toy, but I didn't have much use for it. As chatbots became more common and were built into my browsers, I began using them instead of Google or Wikipedia. AI was faster and more seamless than other tools. Today, on my browser and phone, I have ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and NotebookLM. Claude, an AI assistant built by Anthropic, is my favorite. When I need to find facts to use in my debates with other retired men at the park, Claude gets them from Wikipedia for me. I was taking one of those guys to the Veterans Affairs hospital the other day, and Claude found out for me whether the hospital had WiFi for guests. Before AI, I used search engines for those things. Now I skip the lists of sponsored links and the clickbait articles behind them. Claude cites its sources, and they aren't always the greatest, but if something is mission-critical, I'll double-check what the LLM is saying. I often ask Claude questions about my health. Its conclusions about causes for my symptoms aren't always right, but given the scheduling issues, policies, and preconditions of the US healthcare system, I still find it a helpful first port of call. I know turning to the internet for medical advice comes with risks, but I find it comforting and another arrow in my quiver of managing health as an older person. Claude's availability and bedside manner appeal to me, despite the varied accuracy. Claude's always ready to chat, with no appointments necessary. The chatbot never becomes impatient, condescending, or snippy. If Claude advises me to check with my human doctors, I do it. The first thing I tell them is what Claude said. So far, their reactions have been bemused but appreciative, rather than resistant. Today, there are those who see AI as the beginning of the end for humanity, but among my retired buddies at the park, who've seen previous tech breakthroughs come and go, there's been a collective shrug. Some take it up. Others, set in their ways, carry on without it. Some worry their children and grandchildren will have employment opportunities taken away by AI, but most are just thankful that, being out of the workforce, it won't happen to them. There's already been much talk of AI replacing entry-level white collar jobs. I spent a career writing briefs that AI could now write as well as most recent law school graduates. It summarizes material well, but I'm not sure it's sophisticated enough to appeal to the emotions of a judge. I foresee lawyers being able to use AI tools to save time on research and writing, but I think handholding clients and appearing in court will go on as usual. I'm a little jealous of the still-practicing lawyers who get to integrate this new technology into their practices. I enjoyed those kinds of challenges when I was in their shoes, and I feel I'm missing out on the exciting ways that AI will impact the practice I spent my career in. Changes will be wrought by AI, but it won't be the first or last time that technological change has transformed our workplaces. As a retiree, AI doesn't threaten my livelihood or my lifestyle; it makes life easier. For people still on the front lines, as frightening as the changes may be, I think those who learn AI, embrace it, and integrate it into their careers will do just fine.
