Elephant Man Joseph Merrick Biopic in Works with Jack Huston Attached to Direct

Jack Huston, known for his acting work in Boardwalk Empire and American Hustle, has been tapped to direct a biopic centered on Joseph Merrick, the deformed Victorian-era artist known as The Elephant Man.
Phoenix Pictures is backing the movie, titled "Joseph Merrick", which will be produced by Kate Cohen, Mike Medavoy and David Dobkin. Huston will also produce.
Production is looking to begin later this year.
Merrick was an object of fascination during his life, and his story resonated beyond his lifetime.
He was a man who was incredibly deformed and was used as a circus freak while a teenager before becoming an object of curiosity in London society as well as scientific circles, but he was also an artist whose work broke beyond the limits of his sometimes confined life.
David Lynch directed an Oscar-nominated biopic that starred John Hurt in 1980, titled "The Elephant Man".
Merrick also appeared in countless books, shows, plays, and even an opera.
According to the producers, the biopic will offer a fresh and deeply emotional perspective on Merrick's remarkable life, illuminating the untold story behind the legend. Nick Yarborough wrote the script.
'I've long been fascinated by the life of Joseph Merrick — marked by unimaginable adversity, yet defined by his profound kindness, perseverance and strength,' said Huston in a statement. 'His journey is a testament to what we are capable of when we choose love and compassion over cruelty and indifference. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to explore the lesser-known parts of Joseph's astonishing life, and I'm honored to have the chance to collaborate with such a passionate and dedicated team.'
The project will look at Merrick's final months, and, according to the producers, explore his transformative journey and the unexpected, life-altering relationships he forms along the way. As Merrick discovers moments of true connection and humanity, the film will shine a light on the profound, often overlooked aspects of his experience, challenging what audiences think they know about his life and legacy.
Medavoy added, 'This project has been a labor of love for all of us, and we've been relentless in our search for the right filmmaker to bring Joseph Merrick's story to life. From the moment I saw Jack Huston's Day of the Fight, I knew he was the perfect choice to tell the story. Among the many things that have excited me is that the way Jack sees this story reminds me of Milos Forman when we made One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I couldn't be more thrilled about the poetry, wit, and feeling of human empathy that he will bring to this.'
Huston, who also starred in "Fargo" (season four) and "House of Gucci", will next be seen in the upcoming series "Spider-Noir" with Nicolas Cage.
He made his directorial debut with "Day of the Fight", a boxing drama he also wrote and on which he was a producer.
The movie premiered at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival and went on to win numerous awards for Huston throughout its festival run.

"Eddington" Gets 5-Minute Standing Ovation at Cannes

Yara Sameh 'Eddington,' Ari Aster's Coronavirus-era contemporary Western starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Pedro Pascal, earned a 5-minute standing ovation at world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Friday. The film's distinct comment on American political and societal discourse did not overwhelm some of the international set. High in the rafters of the Palais, at least 20 people trickled out over the course of the screening. When the credits seemed imminent, many up top scattered. Aster was typically self-deprecating after the premiere, saying, 'I don't know what to say. I don't know what you think. Sorry, I guess? Thank you, I guess?' He followed by saying, 'I feel very privileged to be here. This is a dream come true. Thank you so much for having me.' According to its official synopsis, the A24 film is set in May 2020 and follows 'a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal)' that 'sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.' Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr. round out the cast. 'Eddington' is Aster's follow-up to 2023's 'Beau Is Afraid,' which also starred Phoenix as a paranoid man who embarks on a surreal journey to get to his mother's funeral, facing his greatest fears along the way. Despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics, 'Beau Is Afraid' was considered a box office failure, making only $11 million. After premiering at Cannes, 'Eddington' is set for a theatrical release on July 18. The Cannes premiere of 'Eddington' marks Aster's first time attending the festival. His debut feature, horror favorite 'Hereditary,' bowed at Sundance Film Festival in 2018. 'Midsommar,' his well-reviewed sophomore film starring Florence Pugh, and 'Beau Is Afraid' both skipped the festival circuit and went straight into theaters. Aster's cast is more familiar with the festival, with Phoenix having won its best actor award in 2017 for Lynne Ramsay's 'You Were Never Really Here' and stone having attended last year with Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Kinds of Kindness.' With the new two-season order, Netflix has formally picked up at least six out of the planned eight seasons for the Shonda Rhimes-produced Regency-era romance. Paul Mescal's "Hamnet" Sets November Release Date

Yara Sameh Chloe Zhao's next movie 'Hamnet' has secured a prime awards season release date. Focus Features, which is backing the Shakespeare-era historical drama, will open in limited release on November 27 before expanding nationwide on December 12. 'Hamnet' lands in select theaters on the same day as Pixar's 'Zootopia 2' and hopes to serve as counterprogramming when the film widens its footprint in mid December, a week before James Cameron's 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' and Paramount's 'SpongeBob: Search for SquarePants.' Adapted from Maggie O'Farrell's 2020 novel, 'Hamnet' fictionalizes the life of the Bard's son who died at a young age and recounts the powerful love story that inspired the creation of 'Hamlet.' Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will star in the movie as William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes alongside Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew and Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet. Zhao wrote the screenplay with O'Farrell, whose book has sold two million copies in the United States and United Kingdom and has been translated into 40 languages. Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes are among the producers on 'Hamnet,' which will be released overseas by Universal Pictures International. Mescal, currently off Broadway in 'A Streetcar Named Desire,' was officially cast as Paul McCartney in Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopic. In the four-part epic, the Irish actor will share the screen with Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. Buckley will appear next in Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'Frankenstein' spinoff 'The Bride!' opposite Christian Bale. Zhao is the second woman ever to win the Oscar for best director, for 2020's 'Nomadland.' Her other film credits include Disney's 'Eternals,' 'Songs My Brothers Taught Me' and 'The Rider.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 ..
