Hunger-striking mother of jailed activist prepared to die to ‘get Alaa out'

Laila Soueif called on the Prime Minister to pressure Egyptian authorities to release democracy activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who has dual nationality.
She said if she did not survive, her death should be used as a leverage to set her son free.
Speaking to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 from St Thomas' Hospital in London, Mrs Soueif said: 'My message is: use my death as leverage to get Alaa out.
'Don't let my death be in vain.'
Mrs Soueif, who has lost 42% of her bodyweight and weighs 49kg, has not eaten for more than eight months and doctors say she is at risk of sudden death.
She told the broadcaster: 'It's something that I passionately don't want to happen.
'Children want a mother, not a notorious mother – whether the notoriety is good or bad – but if that's what it takes to get Alaa out of jail and to get all my children and grandchildren's life back on track, then that's what I'm going to do.'
In December 2021, Mr Abd El-Fattah was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of spreading false news, and should have been released last year.
In a conference outside the hospital on Tuesday, Sanaa Seif, Mrs Soueif's daughter, said her mother's blood sugar was still very low but that she was conscious.

She said: 'She is fighting and I hope the Foreign Office uses this time her body has given us well.'
Mis Seif said she was supposed to have flown to Cairo on Tuesday to see her brother but stayed to be with her mother.
She had received two letters from Mr Abd El-Fattah – one of which was 'very confused and short', saying simply 'Take care of yourself'.
'I am really worried about him,' she said.
She also said she wanted to save her mother's life but understands her position 'as a mother'.
Ms Seif said: 'The only reason she cares about staying alive is us. She doesn't want to go on living life like this and I understand that.'
Ms Seif accused the Foreign Office of not working fast enough and claimed no one from the Prime Minister's office had been in touch directly about the state of negotiations for around three weeks.
She said: 'We are going by the hour; they were measuring her vitals by the hour, at some point every 15 minutes.
'I expressed my frustration how it is insane that they (the Government) are taking weeks. They have not told me they have changed their pace.'
Ms Seif added: 'I imagine that means they don't have much to say.'
She also urged Foreign Secretary David Lammy to follow through on what he said when in opposition and limit the Egyptian ambassador's access to Whitehall.
Conservative former minister Sir John Whittingdale, who is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told the Today programme Mr Abd El-Fattah was a 'political activist' who had not committed 'any crime that we would recognise'.
He said Mr Lammy was 'outspoken' in opposition but that his action in Government since then 'simply hasn't had an effect'.
Sir John also called on the Foreign Office to change its travel advice for Egypt to warn Britons there is a risk they could 'fall foul of the Egyptian authorities'.
'Egypt gets a huge income from tourism, a lot of that tourism comes from Britain and I think that might well put the pressure on that is obviously needed,' he said.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: 'We are committed to securing Alaa Abd El-Fattah's release.
'The Foreign Secretary stressed the urgency of the situation in a call with his counterpart on Sunday morning, and further engagement at the highest levels of the Egyptian government continues.
'We are deeply concerned by Laila's hospitalisation. We remain in regular contact with Laila's family and have checked on her welfare.'

Minister insists fuel supplies not under threat despite oil refinery closure

An energy minister has insisted fuel supplies will not be under threat after no buyer was found for one of Britain's largest oil refineries. State Oil – the parent company of Prax Group, which owns the Lindsey refinery in North Lincolnshire – collapsed into administration last month, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Michael Shanks pledged to support the workers who are facing redundancy, but said there is little action the Government can take to improve the statutory redundancy offer. Speaking in the Commons, he said: 'We have worked urgently to ensure the safety of the refinery site, the security of fuel supplies and to protect workers. 'This has also allowed time for bidders to express an interest in the site. 'Following a thorough process, the official receiver has rigorously assessed all the bids received and concluded that sale of the business as a whole is not a credible option.' He added: 'A package has been offered to all those directly employed at the refinery, which guarantees their jobs and pay over the coming months. 'And alongside the usual support that is offered to workforces in insolvency situations, the Government will also immediately fund a comprehensive training guarantee for those refinery workers to ensure they have the skills needed and the support to find jobs, for example, in the growing clean energy workforce.' The Lindsey site is one of only five large oil refineries remaining in the UK after the recent closure of the Grangemouth plant in Scotland. Prax Group is led by majority owner and chairman and chief executive Sanjeev Kumar Soosaipillai, who bought the Lindsey oil refinery from French firm Total in 2021. Shadow energy minister Andrew Bowie, who tabled the urgent question, claimed 625 jobs are at risk as he pressed the minister for an update on its investigation into the collapse of the company. He also asked: 'What, if any, assessment has been made into the UK's resilience given the steep reduction in our refining capacity over the past six months? 'What, if any, assessment has been made on the increased reliance on imports that will be necessary as a result of the reduction in British refining capacity?' Mr Shanks said fuel supplies had 'adjusted' in the past few weeks, adding: 'Our assessment suggests there isn't an immediate risk to fuel supplies locally or in the wider area, but we'll continue to monitor that.' On the investigation, he said: 'There is not much I can update the House on at the moment, because the insolvency service is carrying out that investigation.' Conservative MP Martin Vickers, whose Brigg and Immingham constituency includes the oil refinery, said he wanted to see 'the maximum support given to those workers'. Mr Shanks replied: 'We have looked and pushed and pushed to see if there is more action Government can take to change or to give any additional payments. 'It's not possible for Government to do that, not least because the insolvency service has to follow very specific rules in terms of creditors and what their parameters are to operate in the event of an insolvency. 'But I do think the owners of this company have profited from this business, and they should do the right thing by the workforce that delivered that for them.'

Here's what I would have asked Donald Trump during his Scotland trip

We applied for accreditation but access was given to just one Scottish print newspaper, which was picked out of a hat. We missed out. If The National had been given access and an opportunity to question the US president, we would have gone much harder on Gaza. For example, we would have asked why he has repeatedly supported the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. READ MORE: High Court quashes Foreign Office refusal to help Palestinian family leave Gaza The US president sparked international condemnation after calling for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza – saying he believes in a 'clean out' of the Palestinian region in January this year. He has since repeated those calls for the population of Gaza to be housed elsewhere, either temporarily or long-term, in comments that experts have said amounts to support for a war crime. We would also ask why his government is providing billions to Israel, a country that is actively committing genocide and starving a civilian population. READ MORE: Keir Starmer cuts off Donald Trump after 'trade deal should favour Scotland' remark Perhaps we'd ask whether he fears he will end up in The Hague. Certainly another probing question on his ties to disgraced paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein – that's a story he hopes everyone forgets. We'd also perhaps call out the apparent hypocrisy of his administration bringing up the idea of deporting US citizens for crimes when he, himself, is a convicted felon. Or ask about calls for the Scottish Government to launch an investigation into his finances. The list could go on. In the meantime, we will scrutinise from afar.

No 10 brushes off calls for extra bank holiday to mark Lionesses' victory

The England women's team will celebrate their victory with a visit to No 10 on Monday evening, followed by an open-top bus parade through central London on Tuesday. The Lionesses defended their Euros title in a penalty shootout win over Spain in the final in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday. The Government had already indicated it was unlikely to heed calls for an extra bank holiday to herald England's success. On Monday, the Prime Minister's official spokesman attempted to make light of calls for the additional day off work. 'If we had a bank holiday every time the Lionesses win we'd never go to work,' he told reporters. He added: 'It is a tribute to the success of the Lionesses. The Prime Minister has said how inspiring their incredible victory was last night, and the team has captured the hearts of the nation. 'We look forward to joining the rest of the country celebrating this incredible win.' The spokesman pointed to the plans for a parade and the Downing Street reception as part of the Government's efforts to ensure the team has a warm welcome on their return to the UK. Bank holidays have a costly impact on the UK economy, and various governments have been reticent to introduce additional public holidays. Analysis by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport estimated the cost of the additional bank holiday to mark Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee in June 2022 was £2.4 billion. Elsewhere, the Prime Minister's spokesman insisted there was an independent process for nominations for honours, when asked about calls for the team to be recognised for their victory. However, in a rare show of support from the Government for members of the team to receive nominations, he added: 'I hope we'll see lots of nominations for this incredible winning team. 'Many of them were honoured after their incredible Euros win just three years ago, and everyone can see what an amazing job Sarina (Wiegman) and the team have done for this country in terms of its historic win, and women's sport more generally.' Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner will host the Downing Street reception for the England team on Monday night. Asked if Sir Keir Starmer was disappointed not to be at the event, his spokesman insisted the Prime Minister was 'obviously very pleased to be meeting President Trump up in Scotland'. He added: 'I'm sure he (the Prime Minister) will have a chance to celebrate with them in the future as well.'
