James Norton ‘told President Macron 1066 drama would be fair to both sides'
The tapestry depicts the 1066 Norman invasion and Battle Of Hastings, which saw William The Conqueror take the English throne from King Harold and become the first Norman king of England.
In July, it was announced that the 70-metre-long tapestry will return to the UK for the first time in more than 900 years, while President Macron joined Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at the British Museum to celebrate the artwork's return and British-French relations.
In the drama, titled King & Conqueror, Norton is joined by Games Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays William, Duke of Normandy.
Norton said: 'I met President Emmanuel Macron recently at the event at the British Museum where the Bayeux Tapestry is being moved to, and I was very quick to reassure him that we had told the French story, the Norman story, with as little bias as possible.
'There are a lot of stories about William post the Battle of Hastings itself, and how he acted pretty monstrously, but there's no doubt that he had his own domestic space, his relationship with Matilda and his son.
'Nikolaj brought so much complexity to that role, and as a result, I think that the show feels balanced.
'We didn't want one hero or one villain, we wanted the audience to be split and we wanted people to sit on the sofa and have someone on Team Harold and someone on Team William.
'I said to Macron: 'I promise you that we have been fair in depicting both sides of the story', and a lot of that was to do with Nikolaj's brilliant, sensitive performance.'
Norton said he had undertaken 'so much work and research' in preparation for the role.
Of conversations with the drama's writer, Norton said: 'I remember being constantly surprised reading scripts and saying 'is this real? This seems completely mad,' and invariably, he'd be like, 'no, that is exactly what happened.'
'It was extraordinary.'
All episodes of King And Conqueror will be available on BBC iPlayer on August 24 from 6am, while the first episode will air on BBC One that evening.

It's been 30 years since Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes traded social realist documentary filmmaking for narrative fiction. Active since the 1970s, the Belgian brothers are now well into their seventies, having built up an impressive body of work, largely from intensely naturalistic stories of the poor and dispossessed. Their closest British analogue would be Ken Loach, but it isn't too much of a stretch to say the rawness and compassion of their narratives, often populated by non-professional actors, can make Mike Leigh look like Michael Bay. With the brothers' latest – their thirteenth feature and first ensemble piece – the two-time Palme d'Or winners bring their tried-and-true methodology to a diverse quintet of teenagers temporarily housed in a residential shelter for young mothers in the directors' native city of Liège. We cannot help but root for every one of their characters, even when they inevitably fuck up. Ariane (Janaina Halloy Fokan) has resolved to place her newborn with a well-off foster family, against the wishes of her own troubled mother, who wants the baby for herself. Perla (Lucie Laruelle), like the hapless Bruno in the Dardennes' breakthrough film The Child (2005), is not ready for the responsibility parenthood brings, and no wonder – she is, after all, 'a kid with a kid'. Pregnant Jessica (Babette Verbeek), desperate to reconnect with the parent who abandoned her, recalls Cyril in 2011's The Kid with a Bike. Hairdressing apprentice Julie (Elsa Houben) dreams of moving with her baby's young father into their own home, but struggles to resist the heroin addiction her boyfriend has managed to kick. Naima (Samia Hilmi), meanwhile, proves that positive outcomes are possible, as she prepares to leave the shelter for a job on the railways she loves. Winner of the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes, Young Mothers brings nothing new to the Dardennes' canon, but there's comfort in the familiarity of their methodology. They've always had a knack for coaxing tremendous performances from even the youngest of actors, and the cast here is uniformly excellent. As always, the Dardennes paint with a bleak brush, yet invariably succeed in finding light in the darkness, their empathy for those from the lowest rungs of society ultimately shining through. It's a testament to their compassionate lens that we cannot help but root for every one of their characters, even when they inevitably fuck up.

Last batch of rare final Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins entering circulation
The final batch of Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins are entering circulation across the UK, the Royal Mint has announced. More than 23 million Queen coins are being released alongside 7.5 million new King Charles III £1 coins. The Royal Mint said the last of the Elizabeth II coins, dated 2022, are the rarest £1 coins in active circulation. The historic transition – with the dual release of almost 31 million coins – represents a significant moment for UK coinage, as the nation witnesses the changeover from Britain's longest-reigning monarch to her son and heir on the £1 denomination, the Royal Mint said. The Queen's £1 coins will be the final ones bearing Elizabeth II's portrait to enter circulation. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: 'This release represents a pivotal moment in British coinage history. 'As we release more of the King Charles III £1 coins into circulation alongside the final coins of Queen Elizabeth II, we're witnessing the physical representation of our monarchy's transition. 'This dual release creates an exceptional opportunity for both seasoned numismatists and those new to coin collecting.' The Royal Mint is encouraging the public to check its change over the coming weeks, as the new coins begin to appear in pockets and tills across the nation. Ms Morgan added: 'Finding these new coins in your change could spark a rewarding hobby that connects you with the heritage, history and craftsmanship behind British currency.' Since the introduction of the King's effigy on UK coinage in 2023, the 50p and £1 are the only denominations with Charles's portrait to have entered circulation so far. The King's £1 coins feature an intricate bee design on the reverse and are part of the Definitive collection, inspired by the flora and fauna of the British Isles. Some 2.975 million £1s with the King's effigy were released in August last year. In total, there are around 24.7 billion coins in circulation across the UK, with the King's coins representing only around 0.004% of those, making his new coins highly desirable to collectors. All UK coins bearing the Queen's portrait will remain legal tender and in active circulation to allow a smooth transition and minimise the environmental impact and cost.
