Osaka roars into WTA Montreal quarter-finals as Keys fights through

Australian Open champion Madison Keys saved two match points on the way to a three-set victory over Karolina Muchova to reach the WTA Canadian Open quarter-finals on Sunday as former world number one Naomi Osaka roared into the last eight. Keys saved two match points on her own serve in the 10th game of the third set, striping a forehand on the first and escaping the second as Czech Muchova misfired on a service return. The American emerged with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory -- her third of the season that included saving a match point. "I'm really happy to get that win," Keys told the crowd in Montreal. "After losing the first set and even being match point down, being able to figure it out -- it's always a great day." Osaka had no need of heroics as she blew past Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-0 in just 49 minutes. The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan notched the second-quickest tour-level win of her career, after a 42-minute 6-1, 6-1 rout of Ana Sofia Sanchez in the first round at Florianopolis back in 2016. The dominant victory also marked the first time Osaka has conceded just one game or fewer in a completed match since a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Danielle Collins at Beijing in 2018. Perhaps more importantly, it's the first time Osaka has reached the last eight of a 1000 level event or Grand Slam since Doha in 2024. Osaka did not play in 2023 after the birth of her daughter and has struggled for consistency since returning to the game a year ago. She fell in the first round of the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon this year and arrived in Montreal ranked 49th in the world. But she has shaken things up this week, announcing she was parting with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year and immediately getting to work with Poland's Tomasz Wiktorowski -- former coach of Iga Swiatek. "I had a solid plan coming in here and it just happened to work out pretty well," Osaka said of her dominant performance against Sevastova, a former world number 11 also on the comeback trail after maternity leave who had beaten two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula in the third round. Osaka will face either American Amanda Anisimova or Ukraine's Elina Svitolina for a semi-final berth. Anismimova is playing her first tournament since a runner-up finish to Swiatek at Wimbledon, where she admitted she was overwhelmed by nerves in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to the Polish star in the final. Keys, who won 10 of the last 12 points of her match, will face the winner of the first night match between second-seeded Swiatek and Denmark's Clara Tauson. bb/js

West Ham blanks Bournemouth in Premier League US series

Niclas Fullkrug and Jarrod Bowen scored to lift West Ham United over Bournemouth 2-0 on Sunday, giving the London side two wins from three matches in the Premier League Summer Series. Spot-on set up passes by Senegalese left back El Hadji Malick Diouf, signed only on July 15, led to both West Ham goals in the finale of their US pre-season tour at Atlanta. "Both goals are down to him, the quality that he's got, you can see that," Bowen said of Diouf. "He has only been here a few weeks but you would think he has been here years. "He's humble. He's a brilliant guy for the group and he's obviously a brilliant footballer as well. We're very excited to see what he can continue to do here." Diouf's centering ball found England's Bowen in the box, but he was forced to slide a pass left to German teammate Fullkrug, who fired in a shot from point-blank range in the 24th minute. Bowen found the net in the 67th minute, taking a Diouf pass while making a run into the middle of the box then flicking a right-footed shot into the far left side of the goal. Bournemouth had plenty of chances in the first 15 minutes but found the woodwork to squander early opportunities. "What I liked was the character about the group. We didn't have the best start we wanted but we stuck in there. We were together. We were a team," Bowen said. "That was one of the good things to see, the togetherness and the spirit when things aren't going as well at the start. You stick together, you motivate each other, you come through and you win the game." West Ham lost 2-1 to Manchester United to open the round-robin friendly tournament but bounced back to defeat Everton 2-1. "The positives are that we've had three really good, competitive games against Premier League opposition," Bowen said. "The Man United game, I thought we started slowly but put it a good positive performance and were unlucky to lose on the day." js/bb

João Palhinha back in the Premier League with Tottenham on loan from Bayern

LONDON (AP) — Tottenham has bolstered its midfield ahead of its return to the Champions League by signing Portugal international João Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to buy. The defensive midfielder returns to London and the Premier League a year after leaving Fulham for a much-hyped but largely unsuccessful move to Bayern. He has three years left on his Bayern contract. Bayern and Tottenham both confirmed the move Sunday. Palhinha offers a similar defensive midfield option to Spurs' Rodrigo Bentancur or Yves Bissouma. Expectations for Palhinha at Bayern were high but his time spent there had ended with the Portuguese midfielder spending most of the Club World Cup on the bench. Palhinha was a key target for Bayern in 2023, when then-coach Thomas Tuchel wanted to shore up Bayern's midfield. Palhinha even came to Munich for a medical but Bayern's deal with Fulham collapsed at the last moment. When Bayern finally did sign Palhinha for a reported fee of nearly 50 million euros (then $54.2 million) a year later, Vincent Kompany was the new coach. Palhinha's season was affected by injuries or illness but, even when he was fit, Kompany often preferred youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic in the midfield instead. Palhinha only started 10 of the 25 games he played for Bayern in all competitions and was an unused substitute in four of Bayern's five games at the Club World Cup. It's the second time this off-season that Tottenham has signed a player who was out of favor at Bayern after making forward Mathys Tel's loan move permanent. ___ AP soccer:
