Diamondbacks face uphill battle in stacked NL West

Axios30-04-2025

The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of baseball's highest-scoring teams, but they're still struggling to keep up in their hypercompetitive division.
The big picture: The snakes are 15-13, tied for seventh-best in the National League, but they're in fourth place in the five-team NL West.
Arizona has the misfortune of being in the same division as the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers, who have gotten more stacked since winning the World Series last year.
They're tied for the division lead with the San Francisco Giants.
And the third-place San Diego Padres won their first seven games, the best season start in franchise history.
Zoom in: Like last season, the D-Backs' bats have been on fire.
They've got the fourth-most runs (150), RBI (146) and home runs (40) in Major League Baseball.
They scored 10 runs in a single inning against the Chicago Cubs this month, and third baseman Eugenio Suárez knocked four homers out of the park last weekend against the Atlanta Braves.
Suárez is tied for the most home runs in baseball (10), and D-Backs outfielder Corbin Carroll is tied for second-most with nine.
Yes, but: Despite the team's offensive heroics against the Cubs and Braves, Arizona lost both of those games.
Between the lines: Bullpen struggles have become a familiar story over the past few seasons, and 2025 is no different.
Closers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, along with reliever Kevin Ginkel, have faced health issues and injuries.
The top of Arizona's starting pitcher rotation hasn't fared well either. Ace Zac Gallen is 1-4 with a 5.57 ERA, and former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes, the team's big-time offseason acquisition, has yet to notch his first win of the season.
Who we're watching: Starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt has been a bright spot. His five wins are tied for the most in the majors, and he's sporting a 2.73 ERA.
The D-Backs appear interested in trading for St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.
Arizona doesn't look like a team that needs help scoring, but they'll get it when second baseman Ketel Marte returns soon from a hamstring injury.
What's next: The D-Backs got a day off Monday, but things won't be any easier for them Tuesday when they start a three-game series against the NL-leading New York Mets.

Pope Leo XIV shows off his White Sox fandom at weekly general audience

Pope Leo XIV put his baseball fandom on full display Wednesday. He wore a White Sox hat as he arrived at the Vatican for his weekly general audience. Leo, a Chicago native previously known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected as the first U.S.-born pontiff on May 8. Since then, his most notable sports allegiance has been unearthed. Advertisement Although the Chicago Cubs initially claimed Leo after ABC News reported that he was a rare South Side Cubs fan, Leo's brother quickly disputed that story in an interview with Chicago's WGN News. "He was never, ever a Cubs fan, so I don't know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan. Our mother was a Cubs fan. I don't know, maybe that clued in there, and our dad was a Cardinals fan, so I don't know where that all came from. And all the aunts in our mom's family were from North Side, so that's why they were Cubs fans." Then the Chicago Sun-Times located a picture of Leo at the 2005 World Series, in which the White Sox swept the Houston Astros for their first championship in 88 years. Sox on 35th blogger Joe Binder went one step further and dug up footage of the now pope from Game 1 of that series. The camera briefly shows Leo as he nervously awaits the final out, with White Sox closer Bobby Jenks on the bump in a 5-3 win. The White Sox have been celebrating their most famous fan for more than a month now. Leo gave the Sox another reason to continue that parade Wednesday, when he paired the team's iconic cap with his papal garments.

Teoscar Hernández hits a 3-run homer and the Dodgers beat the Padres 5-2 to win the series

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Teoscar Hernández broke a sixth-inning tie with a three-run homer and Michael Conforto also went deep for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Wednesday to take two of three games in the first series this season between the NL West rivals. The defending World Series champions bounced back from Tuesday night's 11-1 loss, a rout so bad for the pitching-strapped Dodgers that utilityman Kiké Hernández pitched the final 2 1/3 innings after starter Matt Sauer threw 111 pitches. Rookie right-hander Ben Casparius got through four innings in his second start of the season, with just one rough patch. He allowed five straight Padres to reach in the second but they got just one run, thanks largely to center fielder Andy Pages throwing out Gavin Sheets at the plate on a 99 mph throw on the fly to catcher Will Smith. After allowing three straight singles, Casparius walked consecutive batters, including No. 9 hitter Martín Maldonado with the bases loaded. Fernando Tatis Jr. then flied out on the first pitch to end the threat. Conforto homered to left-center off Randy Vásquez with one out in the fifth, his fourth. Hernández hit a 420-foot shot to straightaway center field off Jeremiah Estrada with one out in the sixth, his 11th. Freddie Freeman was aboard on a single off Adrian Morejon (3-3), and Smith drew a walk from Estrada. After pulling to 4-2 on Sheets' sacrifice fly in the sixth, the Padres blew another prime scoring chance when Michael Kopech walked the bases loaded with one out in the seventh. Anthony Banda came on and retired three-time batting champion Luis Arraez on a weak popup and Manny Machado on a grounder. Key moment Pages' throw home was on the first base side of the plate, but Smith caught it, wheeled around and tagged Sheets. Key stat Lou Trivino (2-0) got the win and Alex Vesia, the Dodgers' eighth pitcher, struck out the side in the ninth for his third save. Up next Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4, 2.20 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at home against San Francisco. Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (3-1, 3.00) starts the opener of a three-game series at Arizona. ___
