Pope Leo XIV shows off his White Sox fandom at weekly general audience
Pope Leo XIV put his baseball fandom on full display Wednesday.
He wore a White Sox hat as he arrived at the Vatican for his weekly general audience.
Leo, a Chicago native previously known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected as the first U.S.-born pontiff on May 8. Since then, his most notable sports allegiance has been unearthed.

Although the Chicago Cubs initially claimed Leo after ABC News reported that he was a rare South Side Cubs fan, Leo's brother quickly disputed that story in an interview with Chicago's WGN News.
"He was never, ever a Cubs fan, so I don't know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan. Our mother was a Cubs fan. I don't know, maybe that clued in there, and our dad was a Cardinals fan, so I don't know where that all came from. And all the aunts in our mom's family were from North Side, so that's why they were Cubs fans."
Then the Chicago Sun-Times located a picture of Leo at the 2005 World Series, in which the White Sox swept the Houston Astros for their first championship in 88 years.
Sox on 35th blogger Joe Binder went one step further and dug up footage of the now pope from Game 1 of that series. The camera briefly shows Leo as he nervously awaits the final out, with White Sox closer Bobby Jenks on the bump in a 5-3 win.
The White Sox have been celebrating their most famous fan for more than a month now. Leo gave the Sox another reason to continue that parade Wednesday, when he paired the team's iconic cap with his papal garments.

Sabathia's son returns to Eastwood Field
NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — More than 25 years after CC Sabathia dominated on the mound for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, it was a Sabathia reunion of sorts out at Eastwood Field. This time, it's his son, Carsten, taking the field for the Trenton Thunder. 'He let me know as soon as he knew we were coming out here that he was the first one to get on that mound out here, so it's pretty special, man,' Carsten Sabathia III said. After CC started for the Scrappers back in 1999 with a 1.83 earned run average in six starts, it now feels that in some ways, Carsten III is literally following in his dad's footsteps while playing at some of the same ballparks prior to his Major League career. 'Being able to play in Trenton, where he was able to make some rehab starts and playing out here and be in places that he was able to play is really cool for me and my family,' Sabathia III said. 'So it's truly a blessing. I've been enjoying it.' Growing up around big league clubhouses with his Cy Young and World Series winning father gave him a front-row seat to the life of a ballplayer, even if he didn't fully grasp it at the time. 'I have a funny story. When I was young, I was in the back of the car and I asked him, you know, 'What do you do for a living?'' Sabathia III said. ''I know you play baseball sometimes, but now what do you do to make money?' And he was like, 'I play baseball' and I was like, that's pretty cool, I mean, it kind of blew my mind.' Although this Sabathia isn't on the mound, the 6-foot-4 first baseman is still always learning from the former Cleveland and New York great. 'For me, it's always been dad, he tries to make sure of that. But being able to do what he does and kind of learn and take from his career has been super duper special,' Sabathia III said. 'You know, it's something that I'll always be grateful for.' While most of that advice from dad is how pitchers will go after him in the box, CC still shows off those 3-career-home runs and where Carsten's sweet swing came from. 'He definitely makes sure to remind me that he can swing it, too,' Sabathia III said. 'Those videos are pulled up quite often.' This season was supposed to be one where the Boston Red Sox returned to postseason contention. New additions such as starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and third baseman Alex Bregman brought more star power. Top prospects such as Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony were knocking on the doors of the big leagues. Yet, the team has struggled. Currently mired in fourth place in the AL East, nine and a half games behind the New York Yankees, something has to give. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal suggested in a Sunday article on the Athletic that the time is now for the team to promote Anthony and send Campbell back to Triple-A. Advertisement 'Boston Red Sox rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell needs more defensive reps at Triple A,' wrote Rosenthal on Sunday. 'Top prospect Roman Anthony needs to be hitting his 497-foot grand slams in the big leagues. Exchanging one for the other would make the Sox a better team.' Rosenthal's argument makes sense. By running an outfield of Anthony in left, Jarren Duran in center field and Wilyer Abreu in right, the team could use Ceddanne Rafaela and David Hamilton at second while Campbell gets more reps in Triple-A. The rookie started off strong but has cooled off quite a bit lately. Would bringing Anthony up and sending Campbell down help spark the Sox back into contention? Can young players help Red Sox get back to their past winning ways? Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Campbell's defense at second has been a sore spot all season, and he made an inexcusable mistake during Saturday's 10-7 win over the Yankees. Offensively, he is hitting .129 in his last 25 games. For a team that has playoff aspirations like the Red Sox, that simply isn't good enough. It's time for manager Alex Cora and president of baseball operations Craig Breslow to start making moves to shake up this squad. Advertisement Calling up Marcelo Mayer to replace Bregman at third was the right decision. By giving another one of their top prospects plenty of leeway, Breslow and Cora can adjust if he begins to struggle like Campbell currently has. The next step is bringing Anthony to Fenway Park. Baseball's top prospect is ready to go. Can he be the key to turning around a season that began with so much optimism?
