Bangladesh Air Force jet crashes into school, killing at least 20 in Dhaka

At least 20 people were killed and more than 170 others injured after a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka on Monday, authorities said.
The crash occurred at Milestone School and College in the Uttara area around 1:00 p.m. local time.
The F-7 jet aircraft, which had just taken off for a training exercise, reportedly experienced a mechanical failure before slamming into a two-storey school building, the armed forces said in a statement.
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, was among the fatalities. Officials said he had attempted to divert the aircraft to a less populated area before impact.
The Ministry of Health confirmed that 17 of the dead were children. Most of the injured were between 10 and 15 years old, and many suffered burns from jet fuel. More than 50 people were taken to hospitals, including the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital.
Emergency services responded quickly, with firefighters battling flames and searching through debris for survivors. Images from the scene showed widespread damage to the school building with smoke rising from the crash site and crowds watching from surrounding rooftops.
Witnesses said the plane crashed just as students were leaving for the day. Teachers and students reported hearing a loud explosion followed by fire and smoke.
An investigation committee has been formed to determine the cause of the crash.
Bangladesh's interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed condolences and directed all concerned agencies to prioritize assistance to victims and their families.
'This is a moment of deep sorrow for the nation. I wish the injured a speedy recovery and instruct all authorities, including the hospitals concerned, to deal with the situation with utmost importance,' he said in a post on X.
Authorities have declared Tuesday a national day of mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.

DOTr presses MRT-7 contractors, skyway management over Flooding Concerns

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) called on the contractors of the MRT Line 7 project and the Skyway management to address construction-related issues allegedly contributing to flooding in Quezon City. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said he had met with the contractors of the MRT-7 project and directed them to clear any obstructions blocking drainage systems along Commonwealth Avenue. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier said the construction of the MRT-7 Batasan Station may have partially obstructed the flow of rainwater, worsening flooding in the area. According to the agency, a manhole was built directly above existing drainage pipe culverts, and a footing wall may also be impeding water flow. Dizon also raised concerns about the Skyway's downspouts, which were reportedly not connected to proper drainage. The transportation chief said he instructed both SMC and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to coordinate and fix the issue. The SMC denied that MRT-7 structures caused the flooding. The company said all project components in the area were constructed outside existing drainage lines and in compliance with approved plans. It added that while a portion of the drainage system was affected during earlier phases of construction, it was fully restored and certified by the DPWH in March 2025. SMC also said an inspection after the recent flooding revealed that the drainage outlet was heavily clogged with plastic waste and debris, which may have reduced its capacity to carry rainwater. The company noted that no documents have been presented so far to prove that MRT-7 structures obstructed drainage. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that six people have died due to the combined effects of Tropical Cyclone Crising, the southwest monsoon (Habagat), and a low-pressure area. Over 1.2 million people across the country, excluding Eastern Visayas, have been affected.

At least 27 killed as Bangladesh air force plane crashes into school campus

At least 27 people were killed as a Bangladesh air force training jet crashed into a college and school campus in the capital Dhaka on Monday after experiencing a technical problem shortly after take-off, a military spokesperson said. The F-7 BGI jet took off at 1:06 p.m. (0706 GMT) from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, as part of a routine training mission, but encountered a mechanical failure, said the spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury. "The pilot ... made a valiant attempt to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the aircraft ... crashed into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone School and College," he said. The pilot was among those killed in the incident, the military said, adding that a committee had been formed to investigate its cause. Visuals showed rescue workers scouring the charred buildings for debris as distressed family members surrounded the site. Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief adviser on health, told reporters that 88 were admitted to hospital with burn injuries. Those dead included 25 children, a teacher and the pilot. The government announced a day of mourning, with flags at half-mast and special prayers at all places of worship. The F-7 BGI is the final and most advanced variant in China's Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family, according to Jane's Information Group. Bangladesh signed a contract for 16 aircraft in 2011 and deliveries were completed by 2013. The Chengdu F-7 is the licence-built version of the Soviet MiG-21. Videos of the aftermath of the crash showed a big fire near a lawn emitting a thick plume of smoke into the sky, as crowds watched from a distance. বাংলাদেশ বিমান বাহিনীর এফ - 7 বিজেআই প্রশিক্ষণ বিমান উত্তরায় বিধ্বস্ত | Uttara | Plane Crash | UNB #F7বিজেআই #aviation #plane #crash #bangladesh #military #airforce #training #incident #news #বাংলাদেশসংবাদ — UNB - United News of Bangladesh (@unbnewsroom) July 21, 2025 Firefighters sprayed water on the mangled remains of the plane, which appeared to have rammed into the side of a building, damaging iron grills and creating a gaping hole in the structure, footage filmed by Reuters showed. "A third-grade student was brought in dead, and three others, aged 12, 14 and 40, were admitted to the hospital," said Bidhan Sarker, head of the burn unit at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where some victims were taken. Images from the scene also showed people screaming and crying as others tried to comfort them. "When I was picking (up) my kids and went to the gate, I realised something came from behind ... I heard an explosion. When I looked back, I only saw fire and smoke," said Masud Tarik, a teacher at the school. The incident comes a little over a month after an Air India plane crashed into a medical college hostel in neighbouring India's Ahmedabad city, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 on the ground, marking the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade.
