Indian Express29-04-2025

Six Bangladeshi citizens and three Indian human traffickers were arrested from three places in Tripura in the past 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday.
In one case, the arrested accused was identified as Jakir Hussain, a resident of Dhanpur in Sonamura of Sepahijala district.
'We arrested an Indian tout from the Agartala railway station. He used to help those who came here by crossing the international border and were trying to move to other states. He even arranged food and shelter for them. We arrested him and forwarded to the court,' Tapash Das, the officer in charge of the Agartala Government Railway Police, told reporters.
Das added that Jakir Hussain had been wanted for a long time and that the police were checking with different police stations to see if he had any involvement in any other cases.
In the preliminary interrogation, he revealed information about a few people, the officer said. 'We are checking those names. We have shared the information with the BSF and other sister agencies. We will identify and bring them to justice,' Das added.
Later, three Bangladeshis were arrested from Jakir Hussain's home at Baidyanath in Dhanpur panchayat, Sepahijala, along with two drums containing cannabis.
'We rushed to the spot based on secret information. After going there, we found three Bangladeshi nationals. As they failed to show valid documents and give reasons for entering India, we arrested them. After searching the room, we found two drums of cannabis and seized them immediately. We lodged a case against them at a police station,' said a police official.
In a separate incident, the BSF apprehended three Bangladeshis and two Indian touts from the Teliamura railway station while they were trying to board an Agartala-Silchar train.
The three Bangladeshis are from Lakargaon in Habibganj district, while the Indian touts are from Tripura's Khowai district and Silchar in Assam, respectively.
The BSF also seized contraband worth Rs 4 lakh.

70-yr-old guard killed in R'bore tiger attack; 3rd in 2 months

1 2 3 4 Jaipur: A 70-year-old guard of a Jain temple inside Ranthambore Fort was killed in a tiger attack Monday, marking the third human kill in the state's most popular tiger reserve within two months. The death triggered an emergency response, with National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approving a pending proposal to urgently relocate the sub-adult cubs of tigress Arrowhead (T-84), allegedly behind a series of attacks on humans in Ranthambore, including the latest one. The victim was identified as Radheshyam Mali from Sherpur village. Around 4.30am, he went out to relieve himself outside the temple premises when the tiger pounced on him and dragged him away, officials said. Tensions escalated as Mali's kin and locals staged a protest outside the forest department at the fort later in the day, demanding Rs 50 lakh compensation, a govt job for a family member, and 10 bighas of land. Negotiations between the authorities and the protesters remained inconclusive till late evening. Last month, Arrowhead's cub Kankati killed a seven-year-old boy. A week later, she killed a 40-year-old forest guard.

78-year-old bizman found dead in his four-storey S Kol residence

Kolkata: The decomposed body of a 78-year-old businessman, Ashutosh Das , was discovered at his four-storey residence near Ganguly Bagan under Netaji Nagar police station on Monday morning. Cops reached the scene following reports of a foul smell emanating from the building. After initial investigation, police believe that Das, who lived alone, accidentally fell off the stairs at least a couple of days ago and died due to excessive bleeding. His wife passed away several years ago, and his children are settled in Delhi and Australia. A post-mortem is being conducted to rule out foul play. Das, a businessman dealing in printing cloths and saris, was found partially lying on the floor beside a staircase. "It was around 8.55 am that Netaji Nagar PS received information from an unknown caller that a foul smell was emitting from the building. Accordingly, police went to the spot and found that the grill entrance gate of the building was locked with a padlock. Upon repeated knocking and calls made to Das, none responded from inside. Subsequently, police broke open the padlock in the presence of other neighbours. On entering the premises, police also found a wooden entrance door which was locked from inside by a cleat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Simple. He has one son who resides in Delhi and one daughter who resides in Australia. Both are married. His son has been informed," said Kumar. "A local, Amit Banerjee said, "We had not seen Das for several days, which was unusual given he did all the chores himself. "We are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play, though initial evidence suggests an accidental fall," said Bidisha Kalita, DCP (SSD-Jadavpur).

71cr MNREGA scam: Min's son had unlawful access to official portal

Vadodara: The investigation into the Rs 71 crore MNREGA scam, allegedly engineered jointly by a Gujarat minister's two sons and govt officers in Devgadh Baria taluka of Dahod, is throwing up more muck by the day. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The rot ran so deep that Balwant Khabad, the elder son of minister of state for agriculture and panchayats Bachu Khabad, owned the official login credentials for the scheme's portal which no other person other than authorised govt officers can own. This stunning revelation was made by the prosecution in the sessions court in Dahod on Monday during the hearing of applications to cancel bail granted to Balwant and his brother Kiran, a co-accused. While opposing the bail for Balwant, the prosecution told the court of alleged WhatsApp chats that revealed that the login ID and password of the Bhuvan portal used for MNREGA works were shared with Balwant. A senior district police officer confirmed this on condition of anonymity. The portal is used to enter details of completed MNREGA works with geotags and photographs. The official said they are still investigating what the ID was used for. "We are gathering details about the IP addresses used to log in using the ID and password," the official said. Entries regarding the work are to be made by officials, which could be gram rozgar sevaks, technical assistants or other similar officials. The investigating officer moved the applications in the Dahod sessions court after Balwant and Kiran were granted bail by a magisterial court on May 28. The special public prosecutor and counsel representing the brothers submitted their arguments to the court Special public prosecutor Amit Nair pressed for the cancellation of bail even as the application was opposed by senior counsel Sudhir Nanavati. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court has now kept the applications for orders. The brothers are linked to agencies that supplied material for MNREGA works even though they did not qualify as vendors in the bidding. A total of 32 firms connected with the irregularities were detected in an investigation by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), which registered an offence regarding the scam. Balwant was linked to the firm Shri Raj Construction Co, while Kiran to Shri Raj Traders. Shri Raj Traders was paid Rs 30.04 crore, while Shri Raj Construction Co got Rs 82 lakh. Effectively, the brothers took over 40 per cent of the total amount of the scam.
