Sri Lanka to host Pakistan matches at World Cup
Sri Lanka will host matches at this year's Women's World Cup as part of ongoing arrangements surrounding fixtures involving India and Pakistan.India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the men's Champions Trophy earlier this year prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to introduce neutral venues to tournaments hosted by either nation.As part of the plans, announced in December, neither country will travel to the other for an ICC event.The Sri Lankan city of Colombo will join Indian cities Bengaluru, Guwahati, Indore and Visakhapatnam in staging the Women's World Cup, which runs from 30 September until 2 November.Colombo will host Pakistan's seven group games, including against India and England. It will also host a semi-final and the final if Pakistan make it that far.
Bengaluru will stage the opening match, involving India, and the final if Pakistan are not involved. The full list of fixtures for the eight-team tournament is still to be announced.Australia are the defending World Cup champions, having beaten England in the final of the previous tournament in New Zealand, delayed until 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.One potential problem with the logistical switch could be the weather, with October one of the wetter months of the year in Sri Lanka.India and Pakistan were not playing each other outside of major tournaments even before the conflict between the two nations last month.The cricketing tension between the two countries escalated over the Champions Trophy. Even though Pakistan travelled to India for the men's 50-over World Cup in 2023, India did not make a reciprocal journey earlier this year.As part of the ICC arrangements, India played their matches in Dubai, going on to win the trophy after playing every fixture at the same venue.In May, amid cross-border military strikes between the two nations, both the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League were suspended before resuming. The delayed IPL final will be played on Tuesday.It remains to be seen whether the government of either country will allow their team to take part in a fixture against the other.It has also been announced the opening game of next year's Women's T20 World Cup in England will be played at Edgbaston on 12 June.The semi-finals have been confirmed for The Oval. The final will take place at Lord's on 5 July 2026.

Serbia won the reverse fixture but it was held in a high-security bubble and passed off without major incident - despite rioting on the streets beforehand. Now they have been paired together with tonight's game coming under heavy scrutiny - especially since UEFA have awarded the nations joint hosting rights for the 2027 Under-21 Euros because they feel that can help build a relationship between the fierce rivals. And Armand Duka, president of the Albanian Football Federation, called on his compatriots to see the match as a sports event 'where the team gets support and positive energy from the fans to achieve the goal.' 'We want to give the message: let's live it as a sport festivity,' Duka told reporters, adding that Serbia supporters being banned "will contribute to a quieter environment.' He added: 'Players do not bear the burden of history or of the political tensions. They compete on the pitch to win, to give the best for the jersey they represent and, above all, to build the bridge of respect through the game.' Elseid Hysaj, the only member of Albania's present squad who was in the 2014 team, struck a peaceful note too, saying: 'We should be calm and be conscious that we are football players. We are here to please the fans and give our best for the victory.'

Ajax make brutal Jordan Henderson call despite lifeline from England boss Tuchel
England international Jordan Henderson is set to be on the move this summer and hometown club Sunderland are among the candidates for his signature if he leaves Ajax Jordan Henderson has been told he can leave Ajax for free. The England midfielder, who celebrates his 35th birthday this month, is not in new coach Johnny Heitinga's plans - and the Dutch club are hoping that talk of newly-promoted Sunderland offering Henderson a return to the Stadium of Light gains more traction now that their stance is clear. Ajax are desperate to get Henderson's £100,000-a-week salary off the wage bill after being forced to pay a raft of big-money bonuses following their qualification for the Champions League. Henderson began his career with hometown club Sunderland and was at Wembley to see the Black Cats beat Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final to secure a £200million return to the top-flight last month. He has been told by Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel that there is a place for him in England's World Cup squad next summer if he can maintain his form and fitness - and he started against Andorra on Saturday. Henderson's experience would be invaluable for Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris to call on - although whether the Wearside club would match the money he earns in Holland remains to be seen. Ajax moved on Liverpool to make Heitinga their new coach after sacking Francesco Farioli for a dramatic late-season collapse that cost them the Eredivisie title. Heitinga, who joined Arne Slot 's backroom staff at Anfield last year, has already arranged the return of former Southampton winger Dusan Tadic to the Johan Cruyff Arena - and the belief is that the Serb will replace Henderson as club captain. Henderson moved to Amsterdam in January 2024 in a bid to secure a place in England's squad for the Euros after an unhappy six months with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq. But Gareth Southgate still didn't take him to Germany and the player was involved in a row with Ajax during the winter transfer window when they refused to let him take up an offer to join Monaco. Henderson's improved form saw him recalled to international duty when Tuchel named his first England squad in March for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia. Tuchel explained that the former Liverpool skipper is a vital influence for him both on and off the pitch. Henderson has won 83 caps for his country. When he spoke to the Dutch media following the end-of-season collapse that saw Ajax throw away a nine-point lead in the final five games to allow PSV Eindhoven to snatch the title, he admitted: 'I am really proud of what we have achieved this season with Ajax. But next season here? We will have to wait and see. 'The club will have to make decisions. Not just about me, but about other players too. We will also have to sit down at some point with the club and find out what they want to do with the financial situation. 'We have to look at who they want to stay and who they don't. I just want to have a bit of rest, clear my mind. First the national team and then a real holiday.'
