As heavy rain lashes Delhi-NCR, videos of severe waterlogging and traffic snarls fill the Internet
Among the areas that recorded the highest rainfall by 8.30 am were Ayanagar (57.4 mm), Palam (49.4 mm), Mayur Vihar (17.5 mm), and Ridge (17.4 mm). The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain to persist throughout the day. The rain triggered severe waterlogging, resulting in traffic congestion in several areas.
One of the viral videos captures knee-deep water on Outer Ring Road in the Subroto Park area with vehicles, such as buses, cars, and SUVs, moving at a slow pace due to waterlogging. Sharing the video, ANI wrote, 'Waterlogging witnessed on Outer Ring Road in Subroto Park area after rain swept over parts of Delhi earlier this morning.'
Issuing an advisory, the Delhi Traffic Police said, 'Due to the recent rains causing waterlogging at GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar, traffic on old GT Road is likely to be severely affected. Commuters are advised to avoid taking old GT Road.'
'Traffic is affected on Ring Road in the carriageway from Ashram towards Moolchand due to breakdown of MGV near Nehru Nagar,' it added.

Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed Mumbai, too, overnight. The Met Department issued a warning for further rain, issuing a yellow alert till August 18.

'Patchy, on-and-off rain will continue as there is ample moisture,' said an IMD official, noting the monsoon trough lay south of Delhi. August rainfall has reached 256.3mm, exceeding the monthly normal of 233.1mm. The city's yearly total now stands at 819.6mm, surpassing the annual average of 774.4mm – and the fastest this milestone has been crossed since August 1, 2021. After a dry first quarter with just 10.5mm of rain in four months, Delhi has received over 800mm since May, recording excess rainfall every month since then. Friday's maximum temperature was 30.1°C (four degrees below normal) and the minimum 24.2°C (two below normal). Air quality improved to 77 (satisfactory) at 4pm, compared with 90 on Thursday.

‘Wrong' weather forecast: many schools give a miss to celebrations
Independence Day celebrations in schools – students dressed in whites with hues of the Tricolour, attending the school assembly, and participating in cultural and literary activities – on Friday were low-key events or nearly absent, thanks to the forecast of very heavy rainfall during the week. While some school teachers alerted parents that their wards can attend the flag hoisting ceremony in regular school uniform, others sent instructions not to come to the school and watch the live telecast of flag hoisting at Red Fort. Several schools in the city, in the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri, were declared a holiday on Thursday. Schools in Hyderabad functioned half day on Wednesday. The School Education Department also instructed a few districts to declare holiday in view of the weather forecast. According to India Meteorological Department's prediction, the city was to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Reviews, including by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, GHMC, HYDRAA, the police, and widespread social media communication, had put schools and parents on high alert. Contrary to the serious weather forecast by IMD and some self-proclaimed experts, which went wrong, Hyderabad received moderate overnight showers on Monday, brief spell of about 4 cm rainfall on Tuesday, and light rain and drizzle on Wednesday and Thursday, as against orange and yellow alert. In reality, for many schools, the holiday lasted a week - starting Tuesday and ending Sunday.
