11 Lowcountry organizations awarded a total of $618,000 in Impact Grants
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WSAV) – Community Foundation of the Lowcountry awarded $618,427.53 to 11 local organizations in its second Impact Grant cycle of Fiscal Year 2025. These competitive grants are available to organizations serving people who live or work in southern Beaufort County. In this cycle, Impact Grants were awarded for projects and programs related to health, human services, education, entrepreneurship, self-sufficiency, and food insecurity. The recipients of the spring 2025 Community Foundation of the Lowcountry Impact Grants are: • Beaufort Memorial Hospital Endowment Foundation – $100,000 for developing a dedicated Crisis Stabilization Unit to serve individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. • BlacQuity – $55,000 for a year-long, cohort-based business training program that offers practical education, mentorship, and access to startup resources for Black entrepreneurs. • Bluffton Self Help -$55,000 to purchase a refrigerated box truck for the expansion of its Mobile Market and Fresh Xpress programs. • Deep Well Project (in partnership with Bluffton Self Help) – $100,000 to support the creation of a new, shared service center on Hilton Head Island. • HELP of Beaufort – $25,920 to launch a new transportation assistance initiative aimed at helping low-income residents living north of the Broad River maintain employment opportunities south of the Broad. • Love House Learning Academy – $20,000 to launch a comprehensive abuse prevention and awareness program targeting youth and families in Beaufort County. • Lowcountry Legal Volunteers – $65,000 for funding to launch a Wills and Heirs Property Program that will provide free legal services to help families secure generational landownership through estate planning and legal education. • Memory Matters – $36,000 to expand its Bluffton-based dementia support programs, increasing respite day programming to three days per week and adding a fourth day for the early intervention class. • Sandalwood Community Food Pantry – $100,000 to support facility costs for its new 'Resilient Pantry' on Hilton Head Island. • The Sandbox Children's Museum – $11,507.53 for funds to fully implement a hands-on, interactive STEM exhibit for children ages 7–12. • Volunteers in Medicine HHI – $50,000 to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of its Eye Clinic by acquiring two pieces of state-of-the-art equipment. Savannah selected for national initiative focused on financial empowerment
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The City of Savannah has been selected to participate in a program that supports local governments in developing comprehensive financial empowerment strategies. The CityStart initiative is led by the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund). The City will receive intensive technical aid and a $100,000 planning grant to craft a community-informed financial empowerment blueprint. This plan will guide policy and programming to support residents in building assets, improving economic mobility, and creating long-term financial stability. 'Building wealth at the neighborhood level is key to building a stronger Savannah for everyone,' Mayor Van R. Johnson II said 'Through this initiative, we are not only addressing the barriers our residents face now but also creating a roadmap that breaks generational curses and empowers families to leave financial legacies for their children's, children.' 'CityStart gives Savannah the tools, expertise, and partnerships we need to turn financial empowerment into lasting outcomes for our residents,' City Manager Jay Melder said, 'We're excited to build on the work we've already begun and to design a locally driven strategy that reflects the voices and needs of our community.' 'Across the country, leaders are using the levers of local government to deploy financial empowerment strategies that improve their residents' financial stability,' Jonathan Mintz, president and CEO of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund said. 'Our CityStart initiative provides a platform for deep engagement between governments, residents, and other critical partners to create a community-informed plan for transforming residents' financial lives. We look forward to working with the City of Savannah and Mayor Van Johnson to advance financial empowerment and wealth opportunities in Savannah.' Through CityStart, Savannah will align with local priorities and partnership opportunities, helping residents grow, sustain, and protect their assets. Hines-Allen confident in Jaguars' defensive turnaround
JACKSONVILLE, FL. (WSAV) — Joshua Hines-Allen was a strong presence at the second week of organized team activities (OTA) for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hines-Allen's attendance at OTAs came as a surprise, the veteran usually opts out of the mandatory training sessions to train in Arizona. Last season, the Jaguars signed Hines-Allen to a monster 5-year contract worth over $140 million. In 2023, the linebacker had a breakout season. Hines-Allen had 17.5 sacks, which was tied for second most in the National Football League. 2024 saw some regression however, finishing the year with 8 total sacks. Nonetheless, he said he believes Jacksonville's defense can be a major asset this season. 'It's all about the work we put in every day,' he said. 'The communication that we have in the red zone, backed up situations, it all starts out here.'
