Clean the Queen effort rallies Charlotte volunteers ahead of Earth Day
Tuesday is Earth Day, and Charlotteans are doing their part by participating in cleanups all week long.
Channel 9's climate reporter Michelle Alfini introduces a few of the organizers and volunteers who hope this is just the start of getting more involved in making our area greener.
All week long, you might see a few yellow vests along Charlotte's streets, cleaning up whatever they could find.

It is part of the Clean the Queen effort, a week-long collaboration between Envision Charlotte, Charlotte Solid Waste Services Department, and Keep Charlotte Beautiful.
'Doing this kind of event really opens people's eyes to this problem,' said Gracie Bartel with Keep Charlotte Beautiful.
Bartel is the AmeriCorps environment engagement specialist with Keep Charlotte Beautiful.
She said events like this one, especially around Earth Day, are a great way to get people thinking about environmental issues across the city, starting with one that's easy to identify but also overlook.
'Maybe you weren't paying attention while you were driving around,' said Bartel.
Organizers said it's not just about getting the big stuff off of our streets, but these tiny pieces of trash that can be easier to miss can cause the biggest problems.
'Those little pieces are what we really want to focus on because that is what can get into our water or get into our soil,' said Bartel.
From there, she said it can hurt local wildlife and even enter our drinking water systems.
Another way volunteers are trying to reduce waste this week is by learning how to reuse materials that would otherwise head to landfills.

Esther Moberly told Channel 9 that she had volunteered with Clean the City, but this year she's bringing new friends and co-workers.
She said he hoped the event would help open their eyes to environmental concerns across the city, as well as to opportunities to help.
'There are issues. Instead of being at home and being upset about it, get out, do your part, contribute, and learn more about what others are doing. Learn how you can do your part to make a difference,' Moberly said.

Families of deadly mass shooting victims to sue City, OPD, businesses in Downtown Orlando
The families of the two men killed during a mass shooting in Downtown Orlando in 2024 are suing the city, OPD, and several businesses in the Entertainment District. 19-year-old Timothy Schmidt Jr. and 25-year-old Tyrek Hill were fatally shot while attending the traditional bar crawl on Halloween night. 'This can't keep happening. It's indescribable. What's it going to take? A shooting at Disney? A theme park? In a sports arena, why are the streets not safe, but those places seem to be?' said Timothy Schmidt Senior, father of Timothy Schmidt Junior, killed in the mass shooting. Junior was killed on the same night as Tyrek Hill. The 25-year-old was supposed to open his own business just days later, according to his mother. 'To lose your child like this is the worst thing ever,' said Teresa Clinton, Tyrek Hill's mother. 'We know that we all have to leave here, but what a way to go. Because of someone else's negligence.' Attorneys representing the families claim negligent security and wrongful death; they also claim they have been trying to find out who was responsible for getting event permits for last year's event. 'A number of the members of the Orlando Entertainment District, The Block, which is a loosely organized entertainment district in those private enterprises,' said Michael Haggard, crime victim attorney, when asked about what specific businesses would be listed in the suit. As the legal move starts, the suspect, 17-year-old Jaylen Edgar, remains at the Orange County Jail. Edgar faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, with a court hearing scheduled for August 25th. The case is scheduled to be filed at the end of the month, as state law requires six months' notice when a public agency is involved in a lawsuit. 'We can point the blame at anybody. But who's going to step up and make a change?' said Clinton. The City of Orlando sent Channel 9 a statement saying it cannot make comments at this time. Mother speaks out after daughter attacked by group of teens at Fort Mill 7-Eleven
A woman is speaking out after her daughter was attacked at a gas station in Fort Mill. It happened at the 7-Eleven on Doby's Bridge Road in Fort Mill two weeks ago. In a video captured of the incident, a group of nearly 50 teens is seen surrounding the 17-year-old girl's car. One of them then reaches into the vehicle and smacks her. 'I felt mortified. Every hair on my body stood up. I couldn't believe what I was watching,' the teen's mother told Channel 9. She said she didn't know what caused the group to gather around her daughter's car. "The only thing we were given by some of the offenders is that they were in bad moods and bored," the mother explained. ALSO READ: Teen in custody after deadly shooting at Rock Hill gas station Channel 9's Tina Terry spoke with County Solicitor Kevin Brackett about the incident. He said if the young girl had started her car and driven away from the scene, a lot of people could have been hurt. However, she would have been protected by the law. 'I don't know that they understand SC law. I'll take the chance to educate the kids there,' said Brackett. 'SC law is clear. If you're in your car business home, you have the right to defend yourself with lethal force. If that girl had been able to get her car started and put it in gear and punch the gas to pull out of that situation and run over several of those kids, I wouldn't have done anything about it. The law wouldn't have allowed me to, but I wouldn't have anyway because you shouldn't be behaving like that.' He then issued a warning for those teens, as well as their parents. 'You need to be careful; watch what your kids are doing, who they're doing it with, and who they're hanging out with. They are literally in life-and-death situations when they put themselves in places like this, doing things like that,' Brackett continued. The Fort Mill Police Department said they are still investigating the incident. However, so far, at least one juvenile has been charged. Explosion behind Lenoir restaurant causes extensive damage
No one was hurt Tuesday afternoon after an explosion behind a Mexican restaurant in Lenoir, officials said. Lenoir police rescue human trafficking victim from apartment The explosion on Norwood Street SW caused extensive damage and nearby neighbors said it shook their homes. Channel 9 viewers, including Ken Bailey, sent photos of the fire behind the Taqueria El Tio Rico. The owner said there was damage to the restaurant after the fire and explosion near a storage area in the back. A tank landed across Connelly Springs Road and damaged fencing around the building. There were workers there but fortunately none of them were hurt. 'Because of the flames and intense heat, some of the firefighters were checked out after the fire was brought under control,' said Lenoir Fire Chief Norman Staines. The natural gas company also was at the scene. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. No additional details have been made available. This is a developing story.
