Perak Sultan's son among dozens stung by jellyfish during open water meet in Teluk Senangin
The incident occurred at around 9am, prompting immediate medical attention for several participants.
Raja Azlan, the son of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, was among those affected but reportedly remained in good condition and completed his swim.
A Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesperson told the New Straits Times that 'about 30 to 40 swimmers were stung, likely by jellyfish, shortly after the event began.'
'Initial treatment was administered at the on-site medical base by APM and medical personnel from both private and government agencies,' the spokesman said, adding that two children — a nine-year-old from Kajang and a 10-year-old from Lekir — were taken to Seri Manjung Hospital for further treatment.
The event, organised by AMMJB Swimmers Enterprise, drew hundreds of swimmers and spectators.
Event director Saiful Nizam Kamal Arifin confirmed to the New Straits Times that Raja Azlan, who participated in the 3km swim for the 12–19 age group, was stung on the leg but was unfazed.
'He got stung on the leg, but it was very minor. I think, if you really look closely, it's just red, like something bit him, like a mosquito bite. But he's okay,' Saiful said.
'At that time, Tuanku (Zara) asked him during the first loop, 'Are you okay?' and he said, 'Yeah, okay, okay, I'm going for another loop.' He was fine. And he even finished it in style.'
Saiful noted that jellyfish are one of the many natural challenges faced in open water swimming, alongside weather conditions and ocean currents.

Set up help desks at hospitals to guide elderly, disabled, says group
The Penang Hindu Association said senior citizens and the disabled often struggle to find their way inside government hospitals. PETALING JAYA : The Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has called for the health ministry to set up help desks at government hospitals and clinics to assist senior citizens and persons with disabilities in navigating the public healthcare system. While praising the ministry and hospital staff for providing excellent services to the general public, specifically to senior citizens, PHA president P Murugiah said many elderly patients still struggle to find their way inside hospitals. 'In a typical hospital scenario, the consultation room, the x-ray room, the dressing room, the pharmacy and other related medical care rooms are not necessarily situated side by side. Some could even be on a different floor. 'This often causes confusion, especially among the elderly and the physically challenged, who need to move from one place to another while seeking treatment,' he said in a statement today. Murugiah proposed that hospitals set up help desk counters at the main entrances, staffed with trained 'patient navigators'. 'The suggested 'patient navigators' should be individuals trained to guide the patients through the hospital's healthcare systems, ensuring the elderly and the invalid can access the appropriate sections efficiently,' he said, adding that these navigators could reduce confusion and waiting times. Murugiah added that customer service is just as important as medical care, and expressed hope that the health ministry would consider the proposal as part of efforts to support Malaysia's ageing population. Malaysia is projected to become an ageing nation by 2030, with senior citizens making up 15% of the population.

Penang targets diners and eateries in smoking crackdown, 2,647 fines issued so far
SEBERANG PERAI, Aug 7 — Penang is stepping up enforcement against smoking at eateries, targeting both patrons and restaurant-operators who fail to display no-smoking signs or provide smoking facilities. Penang state exco for health, youth and sports Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the state health department is increasing its manpower to strictly enforce the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852). 'The state health department will ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations and smoking bans at eateries and restaurants,' he said after attending a Clean and Smoke-Free Premises Walkabout (BeBas) at the Bandar Cassia R&R Food Court and Batu Kawan Borealis Commercial Centre here today. He said BeBas not only focuses on enforcement against smoking in non-smoking premises, but also aims to encourage community involvement in ensuring adherence to food hygiene rules and smoking bans. 'Premises found to be clean and compliant with specific criteria will be recognised with the Clean and Safe (BeSS) certification,' he added. As at August 5, a total of 2,647 fines have been issued for smoking offences in eateries across Penang. Another 137 notices were issued to premise owners for failing to display no-smoking signs and for providing smoking facilities within their premises. Gooi said food hygiene and smoking-related enforcement should not rest solely with the health department or Health Ministry, but should involve a whole-of-government approach in implementing Act 852 and the Food Act 1983. 'We also urge professional bodies, NGOs, traders' associations and all levels of society to continue supporting efforts to enhance food safety and promote smoke-free environments,' he said.
