Fire at River Valley Road shophouse in Singapore leaves one child dead, 20 injured
SINGAPORE, April 8 — A 10-year-old girl tragically died following a fire at a shophouse on River Valley Road, where children's education and enrichment classes are conducted, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported.
Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam confirmed the fatality while addressing the return of Singapore's Operation Lionheart contingent from Myanmar.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said 20 individuals, including five adults and 15 children, were taken to the hospital.
The fire broke out at 278 River Valley Road around 9.45am, according to SCDF.
Social media videos showed children stranded on a third-floor ledge as black smoke billowed.
According to the report, the three-storey building houses various classes, including a cooking school, a theatre group, and a robotics school.
Bystanders, including construction workers, used scaffolding and ladders to rescue people trapped on the ledge, SCDF noted.
Firefighters deployed rescue ladders and extinguished the blaze with three water jets within 30 minutes.
A total of 80 people were evacuated from the affected building and nearby premises.
Witnesses described distressing scenes to CNA, with one teacher reportedly rescued in tears on a stretcher.
KK Women's and Children's Hospital confirmed receiving casualties from the incident.
Associate Professor Sashikumar Ganapathy, head of the emergency medicine department, said their immediate focus was on providing urgent medical care and supporting caregivers.
Among the injured was the son of Indian politician and actor Pawan Kalyan, according to Indian media and JanaSena Party's Facebook post.
The boy, identified as Mark Shankar, reportedly sustained hand and leg injuries and faced breathing difficulties from smoke inhalation.
Eyewitnesses described seeing children wearing oxygen masks in ambulances.
The fire's smoke was visible from Suntec City, and a faint burning smell lingered even after the blaze was extinguished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, SCDF said, adding thanks to members of the public who bravely assisted in rescuing those trapped.

Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez will seek Wednesday to reduce the $1 million bond on racketeering charges that has kept him in jail nearly a week. A motion filed Tuesday by Lopez's lawyer, Mary Ibrahim, also seeks to modify a condition for his release that his movements be tracked by GPS. Despite facing the same charges as other defendants, Lopez, elected in 2020 as Osceola County's first Hispanic sheriff, was ordered to pay the heftiest bond. It comes with a court-ordered stipulation the payment must be investigated to ensure funds don't come from illegal sources — a condition not required of prosecutors for Cote or Fedrick, according to court records. Defendants typically can obtain a bond by paying a bonding company 10% of the stated value in the court order. Lopez and his codefendants are scheduled to be arraigned June 30.

A woman suspected of murdering her husband during their honeymoon has turned herself in to police, the BBC reported. Authorities allege that Sonam Raghuvanshi, 25, hired professional hitmen to kill her husband, 30-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon to the Indian state of Meghalaya. Sonam and Raja, who were wed on May 11 'in a ceremony blessed by both families,' chose Meghalaya as a honeymoon spot because of its 'very beautiful valleys,' Raja's brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, told the outlet."Their marriage was arranged four months back, and they were both happy and there had been no fights between the couple before or after marriage," Raja's second brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, said. On May 24, four days after they departed for their trip, Sonam and Raja were reported missing. A feverish search undertaken by officials came to an end one week after it began when officers discovered Sonam's corpse at the bottom of a gorge. His throat had been slit, and he was missing his wallet, a chain, and a gold ring. Sonam remained missing until the morning of June 9, when she surrendered to authorities in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. At this time, police have identified her as 'the main suspect.'In addition to Sonam, three more suspects—all of whom hail from the couple's home state—were arrested Monday morning in surprise raids. Texas Amber Alert for Missing Dallas Boy Canceled
Police said four-year-old Luciano Gallegos has been recovered after an Amber Alert was issued for his disappearance in Dallas, Texas, early on Tuesday morning. No further details were given. Newsweek has contacted the Dallas Police Department's public information office for more information. The original Amber Alert said Gallegos was taken by a 21-year-old man named Louis Ricker on Monday, June 9, and was last seen at 2900 Block of South Walton Walker Boulevard in Dallas, traveling southbound at around 11:30 p.m. in a White Mitsubishi Outlander. The Amber Alert system is used widely throughout the U.S., with 82 plans in place to help recover children after they have been determined missing, enabling some missing child reports to be resolved. The alerts can be issued on a state-wide or local scale and more than one child can be involved in the case. The system, which stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, dates back to 1996 when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters worked with the local police to develop a warning system to find abducted children, and later other states and communities soon set up their own plans. These alerts are broadcast through radio, TV, road signs, cellphones, and other data-enabled devices. The Amber Alert system is used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Indian country, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 27 other countries. By the end of 2024, 1,268 children had been recovered due to the activation of an Amber Alert, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which helps to distribute alerts to the public.
