New Zealand Cricket to invest in a new franchise in US-based Major League Cricket
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand Cricket will invest in a new team that will join Major League Cricket in the United States from 2027.
Chief executive Scott Weenink said Thursday NZC will partner with US-based True North Sports Ventures to form the new franchise, which could be based in Toronto or Atlanta.

The partnership is the first of its kind between a full member nation of the ICC and a franchise in a leading professional cricket league, Weenink said.
New Zealand will provide financial equity and high-performance and operational support, including coaching, management and support staff to the yet unnamed team.
'It's a reasonable investment but it's fair to say we are still minority investors,' Weenink said. 'Hopefully, we will also see a growth in capital but also dividends which will start to be spun out of that equity investment.
'We still see India as untapped from a New Zealand Cricket perspective so we are putting a significant amount of energy and resource into growing New Zealand Cricket and New Zealand cricket players' brand in India and we see the same in the US. We see America as such a huge market from a sports perspective.'

Weenink said NZC sees cricket 'really taking off' in the United States on the back of the T20 Cricket World Cup which the US co-hosted last year, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
'So we really want to tap into and jump on board the huge growth opportunity that Major League Cricket and US offers,' he said. 'As franchise cricket grows globally, NZC needs to adapt to seize strategic opportunities that ensure the sustainability of our cricket network.
'This helps diversify our revenue streams, expands our global brand and fan base and creates new talent development and retention pathways for both our players and coaches.'
Several leading New Zealand players already have played in MLC and NZC hopes an association with the US tournament will allow will provide a new pathway for young and senior players.

The 2025 MLC season will be played within the space of a month in June with salaries of up to $200,000 being paid to top players. The short duration of the competition makes it particularly lucrative and attractive.

Goldman Sachs lifts TSMC target as AI and advanced-packaging demand broadens
-- Goldman Sachs raised its price target for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to NT$1,210 from NT$1,145, saying concerns about large AI-chip order cuts have eased while demand for the company's advanced CoWoS packaging is spreading beyond artificial-intelligence workloads. The brokerage increased its earnings forecasts for the world's biggest contract chipmaker by 2%-6% for 2025-27 after boosting projected wafer revenue from 3-nanometre and 5-nanometre production. It now expects TSMC's dollar revenue to grow roughly 29% next year and 17% in 2026. Goldman sees limited risk of further reductions in orders for AI processors, citing improved supply-chain coordination between TSMC and server builders. At the same time, it said more smartphone, server and networking customers are adopting CoWoS – a chip-on-wafer packaging technique that allows multiple chips to be combined inside a single module, helping diversify demand. The brokerage lifted its CoWoS shipment estimates to 664,000 wafers in 2025 and 1.56 million in 2027, and raised its capital-expenditure forecasts to US$42 billion for 2026 and US$50 billion for 2027 to reflect faster capacity expansion. Goldman also expects TSMC to impose another round of price increases on its most advanced manufacturing nodes and packaging services in 2026, supported by tight supply and limited competition. TSMC's Taipei-listed shares were last at NT$1,070, about 13% below the new target, while its New York-listed ADRs traded around $222.18 in afternoon trading on Wednesday. Injury-depleted Diamondbacks place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, give James McCann first start this season
CHICAGO (AP) — The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox. Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4-1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games. Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves. McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs. McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60). He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets and Orioles. 'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I've admired him from across the field through a couple of his organizations.' The Diamondbacks remain without center fielder Corbin Carroll. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year went on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with a chip fracture in his left wrist, and a timeline for his return is unknown. Carroll hasn't played since a pitch hit him in the left hand last Wednesday in Toronto. Infielder Eugenio Suarez was still out the lineup Wednesday after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Shane Smith on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor returned after injuring his shoulder on a swing Monday and sitting out Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:

Oil hovers at levels prior to Iran-Israel conflict as market sends 'clear, bearish signal'
Oil futures rebounded 2% on Wednesday but were still trading near levels seen before the June 13 onset of the Israel-Iran conflict after a US-brokered ceasefire prompted the unwinding of bullish bets and eased concerns of a supply disruption. During Wednesday's session, West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) jumped to above $65 per barrel. Brent crude (BZ=F), the international benchmark, also rose to more than $67 per barrel. Crude bounced off steep two-day losses as fears of a supply interruption stemming from the Middle East conflict eased. US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Tehran's retaliatory response spared energy targets in the region. The ceasefire truce announced by Trump on Wednesday also pushed prices lower. "This is a clear, bearish signal to the market," Vectis Energy Partners principal Tamar Essner told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday morning. "Even if this truce between Iran and Israel is temporary ... for the foreseeable future all three parties, US, Iran, and Israel, are viewed to want to de-escalate and sort of go home and proclaim victory to their internal bases," she added. Since the onset of fighting between Israel and Iran on June 13, Wall Street forecast worst-case scenarios, including prices spiking to the $120 to 130 range if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly 20% of the world's oil supply flows. "Keep in mind most traders had speculated that Iran's oil exports were to be trimmed substantially, but so far that has not been the case," KOK Financial senior vice president of trading Dennis Kissler said in a note on Wednesday. On the supply side, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) had raised output in the months leading up to Israel's strike. "The crude trade is now beginning to price in Iranian oil remaining the same, and adding the increased OPEC+ production, which moves the needle back to oversupply," Kissler added. WTI is down 7% year to date. Brent is down 9%. Ines Ferre is a Senior Business Reporter for Yahoo Finance. Follow her on X at @ines_ferre.
