England name 21-year-old Jacob Bethell as captain for T20 International series against Ireland
Bethell will lead England against Ireland in three T20 Internationals in Dublin.
The previous youngest England captain was Monty Bowden, who was 23 in 1889 when he took charge for a Test in South Africa after regular skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill with fever.
Some senior players will be missing in Ireland, including usual white-ball captain Harry Brook, who will be in charge of one-day international and T20I games against visiting South Africa earlier in September.
"Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said in a statement on Friday.
The captaincy is part of a rapid rise for Bethell, who made his debuts for England in all three formats only last year.
The series in Ireland begins on September 17, after England's tour of South Africa for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three T20 matches, starting September 2.
Right-arm fast bowler Sonny Baker has earned his first national team call-up for the ODIs against South Africa after the 22-year-old impressed selectors with his performance for England Lions and in domestic cricket.
England will then travel to New Zealand in October for a white-ball tour, followed by five Ashes Tests in Australia from November.

Australian middle-distance runner Claudia Hollingsworth has shattered the women's 800m national record, achieving the feat during the Silesia Diamond League in Poland. The 20-year-old Victorian, coached by former Australian champion Craig Mottram, crossed fifth with a time of 1:57.67. That beat the previous national record — Catriona Bisset's 1:57.78 in 2023 — by 0.11s, with Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson from Britain taking gold. Match suspended after star rushed to hospital after suffering horror injury
An English cricket star was rushed to hospital with a horror injury as a Hundred match was suspended. Adam Hose suffered a serious ankle injury while playing for the Trent Rockets in their win over Southern Brave, The Sun reports. As Hose attempted to field a ball just inside the boundary rope, his right leg slipped underneath as his body weight came down on top. The impact saw his ankle become dislocated which saw him instantly grab his leg and be left in excruciating pain. A screen was put around him as he received treatment from medical staff on the field. He was then loaded into an ambulance and rushed to hospital for further treatment. Despite Hose's setback, the Rockets rallied to beat Brave by four wickets. But they now face a lengthy period of time without Hose in the side. It can take anywhere between six and 12 weeks to recover from a dislocated ankle. Scans need to determine whether Hose requires surgery, which could rule him out for an even longer period of time. Fans were quick to send their best wishes to Hose. One said: 'I have never seen an injury like that in a cricket game.' Another declared: 'Get well soon Adam.' One noted: 'One of the most horrific injuries I've seen on a cricket field.' Another added: 'This is absolutely mad, hope he recovers.' The Hundred's official account also tweeted: 'We wish Adam Hose a speedy recovery after an injury to his leg in the field.'
