Billion-dollar breach: Four arrested in Iraq's al-Rafidain bank theft
Shafaq News/ On Monday, four employees were arrested at al-Rafidain Bank branch in Diyala for illegally disbursing more than $1.53 billion from provincial government accounts, Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity revealed.
The suspects, identified as cashiers and counter staff, issued 25 cheques without supporting documentation, enabling embezzlement by personnel in the pronvince's financial department, the Commission added.
Notably, five provincial accountants were detained in April last year for embezzling $1.225B from the same branch. Authorities recovered roughly $460,000 in cash, along with gold, cheques, and property deeds.
Al-Rafidain Bank, Iraq's largest state-run lender, has come under repeated scrutiny for internal control failures. It was previously linked to the 2022 'Theft of the Century,' involving $2.5B from the General Commission for Taxes, which prompted nationwide calls for reform.

Iraq clinches major China oil deal as exports to Asia hold steady
Shafaq News/ Iraq secured the world's second-largest energy deal in May through an agreement with China, while crude exports to top Asian buyers remained broadly stable, official and industry data showed on Wednesday. The South Basra Integrated Project will raise output at the Tuba oil field from 20,000 to 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) and includes a 200,000-bpd refinery, a 620,000-ton petrochemical plant, a 520,000-ton fertilizer facility, and two power stations with a combined capacity of 1,050 megawatts. The deal follows recent high-profile investments, including a BP-led initiative to develop four oil fields in Kirkuk. In February, Iraq and Saudi Arabia led global crude deals, ranging from export contracts to asset acquisitions. Analysts view the streak of agreements as a bid to monetize energy assets and diversify Iraq's economy. Despite volatility in global markets, Iraq's crude shipments to Asia have also remained steady. Customs data showed China imported 1.11 million bpd in May, up 22,000 bpd from the same period last year. India followed with 931,000 bpd, down slightly from 959,000 bpd year-on-year.

Electricity boost: Iraq signs 600 MW pact with Turkiye
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iraq's Ministry of Electricity signed a contract with Turkish company Alifrin to double the capacity of the Iraq-Turkiye power transmission line. The ministry announced in a statement that the agreement will initially supply 300 megawatts to Iraq's national grid through the Jazira-Kasak 400kV line in Nineveh province, with the full 600-megawatt capacity, expected to be operational within a month. 'Technical teams have already completed infrastructure to implement the interconnection, and all contractual obligations have been met.' The contract operates under a Take and Pay model, as Iraq will only pay for the electricity it consumes, 'offering economic flexibility and minimizing financial waste,' the ministry added.
