Mumbai rains today: Netizens urge BMC to set up ‘special swimming classes' as waterlogging reported in many areas
Mumbai woke up to incessant rain, bringing the city to a standstill, with numerous areas waterlogged while hindering transport and flight services. The largely-affected areas comprise Sion, Kurla, Dadar, and Parel.
According to weather officials, Mumbai's Nariman Point area recorded 40 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 7 am today, while Grant Road received 36 mm, Colaba saw 31 mm, and Byculla experienced 21 mm of rainfall. Light rain is also being reported across the city's eastern and western suburbs, they mentioned.
One of the users said, 'Special swimming classes should be introduced by BMC.' Another remarked, 'We spend billions on our infrastructure. But every monsoon its the same story.' 'Duniya khatam hojayegi par Hindmata me mansoon me pani bharana kabhi khatam nahi hoga', 'Never ending problem', 'Never have I seen such rains in May.. it feels like July weather in Mumbai' were some other comments made.
Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rainfall and waterlogging in several areas since last week. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.
In addition, the BMC, along with the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), has identified 96 buildings across the city as hazardous during the monsoon, reports said. Approximately 3,100 residents have been asked to relocate to safer locations.
The IMD stated, 'Conditions are favourable for further advance into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Karnataka including Bengaluru, some parts of Andhra Pradesh, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, more parts of west-central and North Bay of Bengal and some more parts of North Eastern states during next three days.'
Suburban train services on the Central and Western Railway experienced delays, while road traffic was affected by reduced visibility. 'Suburban trains are delayed by eight to 10 minutes because of reduced speed on account of low visibility due to incessant downpour,' PTI quoted a spokesperson of the Central Railway as saying.

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday raised concern over waterlogging in the state capital and asked officials to remain prepared to deal with such situations during monsoons. Addressing the revenue officers' workshop here, Majhi said, 'It rained so heavily in Old Town area of Bhubaneswar yesterday that the road got damaged and the water couldn't be drained out.' This has happened when Asadha month is yet to begin, the chief minister said, while underlining that there could be urban flooding and damage to infrastructure due to heavy rains during monsoon and SOP should be followed to deal with it effectively. Heavy rain on Tuesday evening caused substantial damage to the Badagada Canal road in Old Town area of the city disrupting connection to the main route. Locals raised strong concern over the matter and also complained about the same to mayor Sulochana Das during her visit to the site. As it is, the CM has already asked BMC authorities to complete the ongoing drainage and desiltation works by June 20. Majhi, who had chaired a high-level meeting with authorities of H&UD department last week, has sought adequate measures to address the problem of waterlogging near Iskcon Temple, Cuttack road, Ahalya Nagar, Ayurveda College and other vulnerable areas of the state capital.

82.31% of pre-monsoon silt removed in Mumbai's rivers, drains
MUMBAI: Desilting works in the Mithi River, along with various large and small drains across Mumbai, are progressing rapidly, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday. This year, the target for pre-monsoon desilting is 9,68,008 metric tonnes. As of Wednesday morning, the BMC has removed 796,765 metric tonnes of silt, i.e. 82.31% of the target. The work is executed with the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, which the civic officials say has improved efficiency and transparency in the desilting process. According to the BMC administration, through AI monitoring, fines exceeding ₹3 crore were levied on negligent contractors. Desilting efforts will continue even during and after the monsoon, they said. Each year before monsoon, the BMC's stormwater drainage department undertakes the desilting of major drains in the city, including the Mithi River. Smaller drains are desilted at the ward level. Annual desilting targets are determined based on studies on rainfall patterns and intensity. Before monsoon, 80% of the desilting is planned and 10% is planned during monsoon and post-monsoon. In previous years, desilting city's drains usually began in March. This year, due to the early onset of monsoon on May 26, and unprecedented rainfall recorded in May, the desilting schedule was partially affected. However, by the first week of June, the desilting of all major drains was completed. Work on desilting the Mithi River is currently underway. Special focus is given to improving cleanliness and the river's carrying capacity, said officials. Dedicated teams and equipment have been deployed in various areas to expedite the desilting of the river. To ensure proper execution and supervision, the BMC has mandated the submission of photographs and 30-second video recordings of the desilting work. For smaller drains, CCTV footage depicting before and after conditions must be submitted to the civic body. All submitted media are analyzed using AI systems to ensure proper monitoring and complete transparency in the desilting process.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia assures support to flood-affected north-eastern states
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, on Wednesday, expressed deep concern over the ongoing flood and landslide situation in several Northeastern states caused by incessant heavy rainfall, as per a release. The Minister has been closely monitoring the situation and has assured full assistance from the Central Government to the affected states. In this regard, Scindia personally reached out to the Chief Ministers of Sikkim and Assam, and the Governor of Manipur, to assess the situation and extend the Centre's unwavering support. In a telephonic conversation with the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, the Minister conveyed the Government's commitment to providing all possible aid. 'We remain firmly committed to supporting the people of Sikkim in this challenging time,' Scindia stated. The DoNER Minister also spoke to the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and discussed the evolving situation in the state, assuring him of all necessary support from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation efforts. He also held a conversation with the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, regarding the situation in the State and reiterated the Government's unwavering support to the affected people. Taking to social media, the Minister posted on 'X' to express solidarity with the people of the Northeastern region and reaffirm the Centre's commitment to a swift and coordinated response. Earlier in the day, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Scindia for assuring support over the relief and rehabilitation amid the flood situation in the state. In a post on X, CM Sarma said, 'Grateful to Shri @JM_Scindia ji, Hon'ble Union Minister for DoNER, for his kind concern. A short while ago, he called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam and assured all possible support from the Central Government for relief and rehabilitation efforts. Assam deeply appreciates his gesture and solidarity during this challenging time.' The floods in Assam have claimed the lives of 12 people, with five more deaths attributed to landslides. According to the Assam Disaster Management, over 6.33 lakh people across 21 districts have been displaced, with rescue and relief operations underway. (ANI)
