Body Of Missing Indore Man Found In Gorge In Meghalaya, Search For Wife Continues

Curated By : Last Updated: June 03, 2025, 07:17 IST Indore couple goes missing in Meghalaya (Photo: X) Nine days after a newlywed couple from Indore was reported missing in Meghalaya, the body of the man was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of the state's East Khasi Hills district on Monday. Officials confirmed that the body of Raja Raghuvanshi, 30, has been discovered. However, the search for his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, 27, is still ongoing. The couple, who were on their honeymoon, went missing on 23 May shortly after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village — about 20 kilometres from where Raja's body was found. 'A police drone spotted the body in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong waterfall parking lot. The body was taken to the parking lot for a magisterial inquest in the evening," a senior district official told news agency PTI. The inquest was carried out in the presence of local witnesses. Raja's body was identified by his relatives, who recognised a tattoo on his right hand that read 'Raja". At the location, officials also found a woman's white shirt, a strip of medicine, part of a mobile phone screen, and a smartwatch. The body has been sent to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences for post-mortem. Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills district, said a murder case has been registered, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is now handling the case. The couple, Raja, a transport businessman, and Sonam, had travelled to the rain-soaked hills of Sohra (Cherrapunji) for their honeymoon. They arrived at Mawlakhiat village on 22 May on a rented scooter. After parking it, they trekked down 3,000 steps to visit the famous living root bridges in Nongriat village, where they stayed the night. The following morning, they left the homestay, but there was no contact from them afterwards. On 24 May, their abandoned scooter was found at a café on the road between Shillong and Sohra. Police were alerted, and a search operation began with help from local villagers. However, extremely heavy rainfall and low visibility delayed rescue efforts. Sohra recorded the highest rainfall in the state on 29, 30 and 31 May, with nearly 500 mm falling over three days — equal to the annual rainfall of Mysuru in Karnataka, according to a Met official. Missing Indore tourist's body found in Meghalaya gorge

'A police drone spotted the body in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong waterfall parking lot. The body was taken to the parking lot for a magisterial inquest in the evening,' a senior district official told PTI. Raja and his wife Sonam disappeared on May 23 hours after they checked out of a homestay at Nongriat village, 20 km from where his body was found, they said. Shillong, Jun 2 (PTI) The body of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Monday, several days after the tourist from Indore and his wife had gone missing, officials said. He said the inquest was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses from the area. 'The relatives of the deceased identified the body as that of Raja Raghuvanshi through a distinctive tattoo on the deceased's right hand which read 'Raja',' he said. A woman's white shirt, a strip of medicine, a part of the LCD screen of a mobile phone and a smartwatch were also seized at the spot, the official said. The body was later taken to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences for post-mortem examination. East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said a case of murder has been registered and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident. Rescuers will continue to look for Raja's wife, Sonam, he said. Extremely heavy rainfall and low visibility had on May 30 stalled the search and rescue operations, which was launched by the police on May 24. Sohra area recorded the maximum amount of rainfall in the state on May 29, 30 and 31, recording around 500 mm of rainfall, equalling the annual rainfall record of Mysore, a Met official told PTI. Movement of traffic was also affected across the eastern Khasi and Jaintia Hills region with many places reporting landslides and flash floods that killed six persons and left over 10 people injured. The couple, hailing from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, arrived at Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter. They parked their scooter and trekked 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living rootbridges at Nongriat village, where they stayed the night and left the homestay the following morning. On May 24, their scooter was found abandoned at a cafe along the road from Shillong to Sohra following which the police were informed and by Sunday, the initial search operation was planned with the help of the local villagers, police said. Indore MPs — Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki — had held reviews of the rescue operations with Director General of Police I Nongrang and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, expressing satisfaction over the efforts of the rescue teams. Earlier this year, a Hungarian tourist — Puskas Zsolt — went missing soon after he started his trek to the living rootbridge and he was found dead 12 days later. While the police have ruled out any foul play in his death, medical reports indicated he died due to a fall. PTI JOP ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. New CFSL building in Rajarhat will bolster evidence-based justice across eastern India: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a new building of the Central Forensic Science Lab (CFSL) at Rajarhat in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district and said it was a significant step towards building a data- and evidence-based justice system in eastern India. 'It is a significant step towards building a data and evidence-based justice system in India. The state-of-the-art facility, built at an approximate cost of Rs 90 crore, is poised to serve not only West Bengal but also all North Eastern states, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam, handling complex cases from across the cluster,' he said. Addressing the gathering, Shah talked about the pivotal role of forensic science in the modern criminal justice system, especially with the introduction of the three new criminal laws. 'The new laws have laid special emphasis on evidence, documents, forensic science, and punishment of the guilty based on them,' he said. 'This FSL will play a special role in explaining their importance, implementing them, and delivering the right evidence to the specific police station.' The home minister also spoke about the central government's vision of creating a nationwide network of forensic science labs, serving clusters of three or four states. He announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs would dedicate the next one to two years to developing the overall infrastructure and training for this initiative. 'A nationwide campaign to disseminate forensic information to police stations is set to commence from January 2026, aiming to fully inform the country's criminal justice system. This enhanced forensic infrastructure would significantly streamline and expedite the investigation process, leaving no room for doubt and ensuring that the guilty are punished and the aggrieved receive justice,' he said. Shah urged all police stations, courts, and public prosecutors to understand and utilise the new system to its full potential, facilitating scientific conclusions in complex cases with expert assistance. The new Rajarhat CFSL building will house facilities for various forensic disciplines, including biology, serology, DNA testing, narcotics, chemistry, computer science, psychology, and physics, ensuring comprehensive expert support. Shah stressed the importance of staying 'two steps ahead' of criminals, especially with financial transactions, communication, and identity increasingly moving online. He cited examples of how DNA identification has solved decades-old cases and how mobile forensics, call data, apps, and psychological profiling are aiding in uncovering the source of crimes. 'Our criminal justice system is moving in a new direction,' he added. Shah also used the platform to mention the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), stating that these laws were made by the elected government for the people of India, replacing 160-year-old British-era legislation. India will be data capital of the world in 5 years: Jyotiraditya Scindia

With a 97 per cent fall in the price of data over the past 11 years, India is set to become the data capital of the world in the next five years, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday. India is already the second-largest mobile market globally, with 1.2 billion users and 974 million internet users, of whom 940 million are broadband users, he said. With 1 GB of data now costing ₹9 on average—down from ₹287 in 2014—the cost of communication has fallen by 97 per cent, Scindia said. India's per GB data cost is only one-fifth of the global average, he added. India is also among the only five countries in the world to develop an indigenous 4G telecom stack. BSNL has installed close to 94,000 4G telecom towers. Scindia said he is committed to transforming India Post from a cost centre to a profit centre within the next five years, noting that it has the largest distribution network in the world with 1.64 lakh points of presence. 'There is no reason why the post office can't become a small mall. We are empowering every Grameen Dak Sevak with a handheld electronic payment device,' he said. North East rising Scindia, who also serves as Minister for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, said the eight North Eastern states have seen a decadal compounded annual growth rate of 12–13 per cent, and are on course to becoming the economic powerhouse of the country. He said the recent North East Summit attracted ₹4.3 trillion worth of investment for the region. Highlighting infrastructure development, the Minister said the number of airports in the region has increased to 17, from 9 earlier. Weekly air traffic movements have more than doubled—from 980 a decade ago to about 2,200 now. The region is home to 38 per cent of India's bamboo and 22 per cent of its rubber, and holds the greatest potential for the cultivation of Agarwood, used extensively in the perfume industry. 'Around ₹1,000 crore of investment has been received for Agarwood cultivation in the North East,' Scindia said. He added that nine infrastructure projects worth ₹81,000 crore are currently under execution. The Centre is committed to developing Agartala and Guwahati as connectivity hubs for South East Asia, he said. 'Up to $122 billion of trade currently conducted with ASEAN nations must be routed through the North East,' the minister said. He also noted that 6,000 km of highways and 2,000 km of railways have been built in the region over the past decade.
