Made in India 5th-gen fighter jet: Government clears indigenous stealth fighter jet project as China arms Pakistan

Time of India27-05-2025

NEW DELHI: Defence minister
Rajnath Singh
on Tuesday green-lighted the 'Made in India' fighter jet programme to produce a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA).
India has been working on the ambitious AMCA project to develop a medium-weight, deep-penetration fighter jet with advanced stealth capabilities to bolster its air power.
The AMCA, along with the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), is expected to form the backbone of the
Indian Air Force
(IAF) in the coming decades.
"In a significant push towards enhancing India's indigenous defence capabilities and fostering a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme Execution Model," the ministry of defence said.
The ministry added that private sector companies are invited to participate in the project.
"They can bid either independently or as a joint venture or as consortia. The entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country," the ministry said in a statement.
This move comes amid heightened tensions with Pakistan after armed forces conducted precision strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir killing over 100 terrorists.

Meanwhile, a recent US intel report also claimed that
Last year, the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, granted in-principle approval to the AMCA programme. The indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet project is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the IAF's combat capabilities.
The estimated development cost of the AMCA project stands at approximately Rs 15,000 crore.
The IAF has long advocated for the AMCA programme, given its long-term strategic requirements and the absence of a fifth-generation fighter jet in its current fleet. In contrast, China has already inducted its Chengdu J-20 jets, which it claims to be fifth-generation air superiority fighters with precision strike capabilities.
India's confidence in the AMCA initiative received a major boost following the successful development of the LCA Tejas.
Developed by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas has proven to be a capable platform for air combat and offensive missions, with secondary roles in reconnaissance and anti-ship operations.
Meanwhile, the IAF is also in the process of acquiring 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) to enhance its operational readiness. In April 2019, the IAF issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement, estimated at around USD 18 billion. The MRFA deal is considered one of the largest military procurement programmes globally in recent years.

Man arrested for ‘anti-India' social media posts in HP's Paonta Sahib

A man was arrested for his social media posts allegedly endangered India's sovereignty, unity, and integrity, Himachal Pradesh Police said on Monday. Police arrested Suleman, a migrant from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh who lived in Khadda Colony of Badripur tehsil in Paonta Sahib, on Sunday after a tip-off from locals that he was back in town. He had disappeared for a few days after a case was registered against him on May 27. Local residents of Paonta Sahib had lodged a complaint against the man, a vegetable vendor, stating that he had posted anti-India content and criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over actions taken against Pakistan. His posts hurt religious feelings and used anti-national language tantamount to serious acts of sedition, the complaint added. After police registered the case, he disappeared and came back to Paonta Sahib on Sunday and was then arrested following a tip-off from the locals. Sirmaur SP Nischit Singh Negi said that it was the first case of its type in the district as the FIR was registered under Section 152 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Solar body urges govt to extend transmission fee waiver for delayed projects

The National Solar Energy Federation of India ( NSEFI ) has urged the government to protect the viability of numerous renewable energy projects facing risks from delays beyond the control of developers, according to a person familiar with the matter. In the letter to the advisor to the Prime Minister's Office, the federation urged that the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges waiver be extended to projects getting commissioned by June 2026 and meeting a specific criterion relating to connectivity application status, financial closure, land acquisition beyond the 50 per cent threshold, and if orders for equipment have been made. The federation, representing a broad spectrum of stakeholders across the solar value chain, stated that while the ISTS waiver, originally announced by the Ministry of Power (MoP), has played a "pivotal role in making renewable power more competitive", its delayed implementation by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) in February 2023 left many developers in a limbo. They are imposed to cover the costs relating to building and maintaining transmission lines and other infrastructure required for interstate electricity transfer. According to an energy expert, industry estimates state that renewable energy projects of nearly Rs 5 lakh crore would be impacted if the waiver of ISTS charges is not extended. Live Events "Several RE developers made early investments, securing land, achieving financial closure, and signing definitive agreements based on the original MoP notification," the federation said. However, due to aspects like the nearly two-year lag in CERC's ratification and other uncontrollable factors, these developers are now at risk of missing the commissioning deadline of June 30, 2025, making them ineligible for the waiver. The federation flagged multiple aspects, including prolonged approvals under Section 68(1) of the Electricity Act due to an ongoing Supreme Court case on Great Indian Bustard conservation, delay in transmission planning and connectivity effectiveness, and delayed commissioning of critical transmission infrastructure. "Several developers applied for ISTS connectivity well before June 2023, in line with the ISTS waiver policy timelines. However, the effectiveness dates for granted connectivity are being issued much later, often in 2026 or 2027, due to delays in transmission system planning and execution," the federation said. The federation has proposed a milestone-based eligibility framework for the waiver. It has recommended that projects that had applied for transmission connectivity on or before June 30, 2023, achieved financial closure, acquired at least 50 per cent of the land required for their development, and placed orders for wind turbine generators and/or inverters must be considered for the purpose of availing the ISTS waiver. It argued that the approach is consistent with CERC's regulations and recent Ministry of Power notifications granting waiver flexibility to pumped storage and battery storage projects. "The proposed eligibility criteria will ensure that only serious and committed renewable energy developers, who had factored the ISTS waiver into their project design and commercial commitments, benefit from this extension," the federation said.
