How to book an epic Arctic or Antarctica cruise without overspending

USA Today10-07-2025
Expedition cruises to the icy wilds of the Arctic and Antarctica often come with steep fares. Not all sailings cost the same, though.
Much like traditional ocean cruising, there are a range of operators with varying price points, inclusions and vibes – and those kinds of bucket list trips can be more affordable than they seem.
Travelers can pick between basic ships with some amenities or splurge on nicer cruises, which may not be as different in price as they look. Here's what to know about which Arctic and Antarctic cruise lines are the most cost-effective.
What Arctic and Antarctic cruises are most affordable?
Some companies place more emphasis on the action outside the ship than an uber-plush onboard experience, and travelers may find lower rates by booking with one of those. According to Claire Maguire, a travel agent and franchise owner at Cruise Planners, more laid-back, affordable operators include:
Atlas Ocean Voyages is also 'a very good value' in Maguire's opinion, offering a combination of amenities and excursions. 'They kind of hit the sweet spot in between everything,' she said. Quark Expeditions is another to consider.
Other cruise lines lean more into the luxury, combining intrepid exploration with a plethora of creature comforts from fine dining to more personalized service, such as:
Other upscale operators include Ponant and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours.
Maguire noted that while National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is heavily centered around the expedition elements of the trip, its fares also trend towards luxury pricing for the storied brand name and top-tier onboard experts.
Even on luxury cruise lines, however, Maguire noted that expedition ships tend to be more casual than the typical oceangoing vessel might, given the spirit of adventure and activity-heavy itineraries.
Pricing doesn't always fall neatly along those lines, either, and it's worth comparing and contrasting before booking.
Depending on where the ship is sailing, there may also be limits on the number of guests who can go ashore at a time, somewhat standardizing those aspects of the cruises.
What do Arctic and Antarctica cruise fares include?
Generally, all expedition cruise operators include many of the activities – with some available for an extra charge – most meals and beverages, onboard lectures, Citizen Science activities, and select gear such as parkas, per Maguire.
Some companies also offer room-share options that pair guests with another passenger. 'So that would help cut the cost down, if you're willing to share with a stranger,' she said.
Luxury cruise lines are likely to bundle more with their fares, however, such as a wider range of alcoholic beverages, a hotel stay – Silversea is even developing its own hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile, which will serve as a stopover for guests on voyages to Antarctica – or flights, depending on the fare type.
Are luxury expedition cruises more expensive?
Not necessarily. 'Look at the inclusions, because a lot of them will be a (certain) price point, but then, when you look, you have to add a flight to your separate flight to Ushuaia or your flight from Santiago down to Punta Arenas (to reach Antarctica), or your hotel is not included,' Maguire said.
Pricing can also fluctuate depending on when guests book, meaning different kinds of operators may not be priced so differently.
For example, a week-long Silversea expedition round-trip from Longyearbyen in Svalbard departing in June 2026 currently starts at $12,560 per person based on double occupancy, according to the cruise line's website. An eight-day voyage centered on Svalbard's largest island, Spitsbergen – where Longyearbyen is located – with Aurora, the same month currently starts at $12,236 per person.
'To be honest, it's more about the experience,' said Maguire. 'They're pretty close in price point, because if you get the right sale price, then you can literally get into a luxury trip at the same price point.'

Lindblad Names Two New Ships And Launches ‘Explorers-In-Training'

It's been a busy month for National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions, which named its two new ships, National Geographic Gemini and National Geographic Delfina, in an elaborate christening ceremony in the Galápagos Islands on July 9, 2025, and launched its new 'Explorers-in-Training' programming for kids and teens at the end of July. Anchored in Academy Bay, the two new ships were joined by their sibling vessels, National Geographic Islander II and National Geographic Endeavour II. Onboard the Gemini, the crew were joined by several members of Lindblad Expeditions' executive team, including CEO Natalya Leahy and Interim Chief Maritime Officer, Rear Admiral Keith Taylor, plus several local partners, community members and their families. 'Today, we celebrate not just an event, we're celebrating a story that started in February 1967, when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the very first non-scientific expedition to the Galápagos Islands,' said Leahy. 'Today's naming is done in honor of the Galápagos community. We will continue our hard work right by your side and never forget that we are just visitors to your home.' Two New Ships: Gemini and Delfina Designed to hold just 48 guests in its 27 outward-facing staterooms, National Geographic Gemini strikes a perfect balance between small-ship and large-ship cruising, with plenty of activities, space to stretch out on the deck and enough peace to relax in the library or lounge. Ideal for intimate group sailings, National Geographic Delfina holds just 16 guests in its eight artfully designed guest rooms, all of which provide access to an outer deck or private balcony. Both ships come equipped with a whirlpool hot tub to unwind in after a long day of sightseeing, and you can expect educational talks by onboard naturalists and an elegant dining experience featuring locally sourced food and wine. To cut down on food waste, passengers are encouraged to note their dinner preferences ahead of time, while coffee, tea, and tasty Ecuadorian snacks are available 24/7 in the lounge, just in case. You can experience the Gemini on the 10-day Exploring Galápagos sailing (from $5,556 per person) or the Delfina during the 10-day Galápagos by Catamaran: An Intimate Voyage itinerary (from $7,900 per person). Both trips also offer a longer 16-day version that adds time in Peru and a trip to Machu Picchu. New 'Explorers-In-Training' Programming for Kids The cruise line also recently revamped its National Geographic Explorers-In-Training programming, which features hands-on activities geared toward younger guests aboard select sailings to Antarctica and Iceland, and all trips to the Galápagos Islands, Alaska, and Baja California. Originally created in 2017, the newly expanded program is meant to keep kids and teens inspired by science, curiosity and conservation as they encounter new landscapes, flora and fauna throughout the cruise. Activities vary based on the itinerary and destination but generally include opportunities to learn to drive a zodiac, participate in educational games and scavenger hunts, conduct experiments and mark the unique creatures they've seen in region-specific field notebooks. At the end of the sailing, their accomplishments are celebrated during a shipboard presentation where they'll receive a certificate and patch to remember their trip by. While these immersive experiences—led by some of National Geographic's best photographers, naturalists, undersea specialists and certified field educators—are intended for children and teens, all ages are invited to participate. What to Know Before You Go Instead of following a set schedule, National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions sailings are more fluid, with loose itineraries based on daily traffic within Galápagos National Park. You'll be given a rough idea of the types of activities you'll be doing ahead of time so you know what to pack, and once onboard, the details of the next day's plans are shared during nightly presentations by expedition leaders. That way, everyone is prepared and with the Galápagos National Park Service directing ship traffic, the UNESCO World Heritage site doesn't get too overwhelmed by visitors. This type of flexibility also gives ship captains the ability to veer slightly off schedule and turn the vessel around if, for instance, a blue whale is spotted and the team of onboard naturalists wants to turn the rare sighting into an educational moment. Itineraries for the cruise line's two new ships are packed with only-in-Galápagos experiences like visits to the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island, epic hikes on lava fields, and scenic nature walks through endemic bird habitats. You'll also have many, many chances to swim alongside Galápagos sea lions and penguins, view blue-footed boobies from a zodiac and see other rare creatures—like Galápagos marine iguanas—in the wild. Remember to pack a good pair of waterproof hiking sandals for wet landings, hiking boots for dry landings, reef-safe sunscreen, and your best camera or a new Go-Pro for underwater videos. Pack plenty of 'Expedition Chic' attire like lightweight khaki pants and hiking shirts to avoid getting sunburned—you'll be sailing along the equator, after all, and the sun is strong. While the total cost of your Galápagos cruise aboard either of the two new ships doesn't include international airfare, gratuities or spa services, it does cover all your meals and beverages, educational presentations by National Geographic photographers and naturalists, access to kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, shore excursions aboard zodiacs and use of snorkeling equipment (masks, fins, and shorty wetsuits—bring a full-body diving skin to wear under it if you're wary of swimming in cooler waters). Cruise fares also include domestic flights to Baltra Island (GPS) from Guayaquil (GYE) or Quito (UIO), two nights' accommodations in either city (one before your sailing and one after), port taxes, the Galápagos Islands National Park entrance fee ($200 per adult, $100 per child) and the Tourist Transit Card fee ($20 per person). Pre- and post-cruise extensions are also available if you want to spend more time exploring Ecuador.

Three Americans evacuated from Antarctica after medical emergency at research station

New Zealand's air force carried out a nearly 20-hour medical evacuation to rescue three Americans from Antarctica, calling it a high-risk mission conducted in freezing temperatures and total darkness. The U.S. National Science Foundation requested the evacuation after three staff members at McMurdo Station were unable to receive adequate medical treatment on-site. One of the individuals required urgent care, while the other two also needed medical attention and were transported as a precaution, according to New Zealand's air force. Air Commodore Andy Scott, head of New Zealand's air component, said mid-winter flights to Antarctica are among the most difficult missions due to shifting weather, extreme cold and ice landings in total darkness. "The crew can only attempt the flight after detailed analysis of the weather and airfield state," Scott said. "The United States Antarctic Program Winter Team must physically create the runway before we can depart by ensuring the ice is groomed and suitable for landing. "Although they determine it is safe, it's still an extremely challenging environment to fly in on Night Vision Goggles due to the extreme weather conditions, which are highly changeable at this time of year and makes accurate forecasting a challenge," he added. "This, coupled with there being no airfields available to divert to once the aircraft is past a certain point south adds to the risk, so these missions are not taken lightly." A medical team, including a physician, accompanied the crew to provide in-flight care during the return to Christchurch. The aircraft was pre-positioned from Auckland to Christchurch on Sunday, with a crew on standby for a weather window. The crew made the decision on Tuesday to fly to Antarctica, working through the night to complete the mission. After landing on the ice runway, the aircraft's engines remained running to prevent freezing during refueling, the air force said. The round-trip mission lasted 19.5 hours, with the aircraft touching down in Christchurch on Wednesday morning. Temperatures at McMurdo Station dropped to -11°F during the operation, adding to the already dangerous conditions. Melissa Sweeney, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires to New Zealand, praised the operation as "flawless." "We are so very grateful. Our Kiwi partners didn't hesitate to undertake this mission in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. Their skill and readiness are truly world-class," she said.
