Venus Williams makes winning tennis return aged 45
Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024.
'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match.
'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.'
Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena.
She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!'
Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set.
It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year.
British number one Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle in the singles as she went out 3-6 4-6 to Greece's Maria Sakkari.
Boulter lost her opening service game in each set and was never able to regain the initiative.
Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs.
Evans, the veteran former British number one, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics.
The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3.
Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games.
'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year.
'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.'

NFLPA hires David White as interim executive director
August 4 - Less than three weeks after NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell Jr. resigned amid numerous allegations of impropriety, the union elected David White as it interim executive director on Sunday. White is the chief executive officer of consulting firm 3CG Ventures and the former national executive director and chief negotiator of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA). He was a finalist for the NFLPA post when a the board of 32 player representatives elected Howell in June 2023, according to multiple media reports. NFLPA president Jalen Reeves-Maybin said in a statement regarding the move by the Board of Player Representatives to appoint White, "This decision is the result of a comprehensive, player-led process. We understood the urgency to fill this role and did our due diligence to identify the right person to lead our union in this moment. "We have full faith in David to take the union forward and operate in the best interests of our membership. David has spent much of his career fighting for collectively bargained rights in the labor movement and is committed to putting players first in all the union does. We are confident that he will inspire solidarity and provide the necessary stability during this period of transition." White added in a statement, "I am grateful to the NFLPA's player leadership for entrusting me with the privilege and responsibility to guide their union as interim executive director. It's a duty I do not take lightly, and I'm committed to reestablishing trust and ensuring the union is serving its members best. I look forward to working with the entire NFLPA team to protect players' health and safety, secure their financial well-being, and further strengthen their voice to shape their futures." Howell stepped down on July 17 to no longer be a "distraction" for the NFLPA. During his tenure, he allegedly reached a confidentiality agreement with the NFL over a collusion case, worked for a private equity firm approved to pursue NFL minority ownership stakes and made inappropriate charges to the union, include a strip club visit. Former NFLPA president JC Tretter, considered a possible replacement for Howell, resigned from his job as the NFLPA's chief strategy officer after Howell's exit. Tretter was viewed as instrumental in getting the union to hire Howell, who also left a previous job at Booz Allen, where he was reportedly accused of sexual discrimination. --Field Level Media

British and Irish Lions centre Bundee Aki missed the birth of his fifth child with the Irishman preparing for the First Test in Australia and has revealed his wife gave birth in the car British and Irish Lions star Bundee Aki has confessed that, whilst he was playing in Australia, his wife gave birth to their fifth child in the car. The Ireland international was playing Down Under, taking part in his second Lions tour, when his wife was on her way to the hospital after she felt contractions, only for her waters to break en route. She ended up giving birth to another child whilst she was still on the road. This happened ahead of the First Test in Australia, just over a fortnight ago. The first of Aki's five children was born in hospital and the next three at home. But their latest, Aine, entered the world in the back of a car in New Zealand. His wife Kayla had headed back there to visit family whilst Aki represented the Lions. After helping the Lions end a 12 year wait for a series victory the Connacht star revealed that he was yet to meet the latest member of his offspring, something he had kept quiet throughout the tour's final few weeks. He told the BBC: "I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. I have a newborn child who I haven't met yet." Aki added: "Credit to my wife.." before going on to explain the remarkable event. He said: "It was a good day. I was in the team hotel. I knew we were overdue. The missus calls me and she's like, 'My water hasn't broken but I'm going to the hospital, I'm feeling contractions'. We were getting ready for the team meeting pre-match and she calls back and says she's now on the way to the hospital. "Five minutes later, she sends a photo - her water had broken. I was like, 'Cool, OK, are you almost there?' This is like 30 or 40 minutes away from the hospital. I said, 'You'll be all right, Mum is there'. Ten minutes later, she video calls. I was like, 'What's going on?' - and I saw a baby on the video call. She had it in the car on the way to the hospital. They're both strong and healthy, so happy days." The First Test is the only one he did not start, coming on in the 57th minute as the Lions secured a 27-19 victory following a stellar opening 50 minutes. Aki admits he knew they were on for a winning start after receiving the news of his latest arrivals. "I knew it was good 'Juju' [a magical property bringing good luck]. I knew we were going to have a good day," he said. All my kids start with A and my wife loved the name Aine. That's five As in the family - Armani, Adrianna, Andronicus, Ailbhe, and now Aine." Aki played in the centres again with Huw Jones on Saturday as the Lions missed out on making it a clean sweep in Australia. The Wallabies produced a spirited performance in Sydney to down Andy Farrell's men and restore some pride with the series already beyond them.
