This £16 SPF Is Japan's Best-Kept Secret – Now, It's Available At Boots

Before my recent trip to Japan, I did what any beauty obsessive would: research. I knew I was heading to the skincare capital of the world, where the pharmacies are treasure troves and SPF isn't just for summer - it's a lifestyle. Japanese beauty is big. Really big. Their approach to skincare is about clever innovation, satisfying texture, and, most importantly, long-term results. And while K-beauty might get more hype online, J-beauty is quietly iconic in its own right. It may be characterised by minimalist packaging but be rest assured that it's super-effective - just look at Tatcha's best skincare products for proof.
So, in between browsing matcha cafés and convenience stores, I made a pilgrimage to Don Quijote, Japan's chaotic but legendary discount megastore - think beauty aisle meets carnival. It was there, armed with screenshots and a suitcase, that I bought not one but six bottles of Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50, including the spray version. I also loaded up on viral rice masks, lip oils and of course, the Vitamin C serums made famous by TikTok.
But let's get back to the sunscreen. When is comes to SPF there is very few I like. There's the Ultra Violette Fave Fluid Skinscreen, £37, Elemis Pro-Collagen Skin Protection Fluid SPF50, £44, and Supergoop! Unseen Suncreen SPF30, £36.50, but that is about it. I was very keen to expand my limited stash and am thrilled to confirm that the the Bioré Aqua Rich is Japan's number one for a reason. Happily, it's finally available in the UK at Boots, so you don't even need to book a holiday to Tokyo in order to get your hands on it. As a seriously fussy beauty writer I can confirm: this stuff is elite. For just £16, you're getting the following: SPF 50+ broad spectrum protection
A weightless, watery-gel texture
Instant hydration without stickiness
A cast-free finish on all skin tones
Oil-free formula that won't clog pores
Hyaluronic acid (great for aiding moisture)
Vegan-friendly formula
Suitable for sensitive skin
If you've ever skipped sunscreen because it felt greasy, heavy or left an unsightly cast (guilty), this one will convert you. It absorbs instantly, leaving no white cast, no pilling and no weird film; expect fresh, hydrated skin that's ready for make-up. Truly, if I didn't know it was SPF, I wouldn't believe it. I also grabbed the spray version for easy top-ups over make-up when I'm running between meetings. It's really convenient for re-applying every two hours like you're supposed to (we all forget), though I'll be honest: it can get a tiny bit oily if you overdo it; little and often is the trick. Still, in the blazing Tokyo sun, I didn't burn once. It's impressive stuff.
The Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence is everything sunscreen should be - light, invisible, hydrating, and genuinely enjoyable to use. No wonder it's a cult favourite. If you're SPF averse or simply looking to upgrade your summer routine, this £16 bottle might just become your new holy grail. I get the hype, I really do. 1.

Terrified holidaymakers watch Iranian missiles soar over holiday hotspot

Holidaymakers from the UK and Belgium have posted alarming footage to TikTok after seeing missiles lighting up the sky. Holidaymakers in Cyprus witnessed an eerie sight on Sunday night as Iranian missiles streaked across the sky in a chilling reminder of the escalating conflict in the Middle East. British TikTok user Sapphire shared a clip of the moment she saw a series of Iranian missiles lighting up the sky. "Crazy we can see this," she wrote alongside her clip, reports the Mirror. ‌ Sitting by her hotel's swimming pool in the Mediterranean Island, she added to her "POV" [point of view]: "You're having a nice drink in Cyprus and then you see Iranian missiles heading towards Israel." ‌ In another clip shared on TikTok, Belgian national Filipe de Almeida shared his own shocking experience. He wrote: ""The way I instantly knew what this was, my heart felt so heavy watching this." Echoing Sapphire's video, he continued: ""Point of view - you are in Cyprus for holidays taking pictures of the moon and see missiles from your hotel balcony." As Filipe panned his camera over the pool, he captured various fiery red dots in the distance, heading towards Israel. Reacting to Sapphire's post, one TikTok user confessed: "I'd never considered that people actually see missiles going from one country to another that is terrifying." "It was so terrifying," Sapphire responded. "Thinking of everyone that has lost loved ones." ‌ A second person added: "This would have broken my heart to see." To which Sapphire empathised: "It did break mine, hate to see all this happening." Meanwhile, another asked advice from Sapphire about an upcoming trip: "Hi, I should come on vacation to Cyprus in a few months. How is it there? Is there a concern about the nearby war?" She attempted to reassure them, however, exclaiming: "No concern at all! Flights are normal and we have been having such a lovely week here. Just sometimes sadly you can see it in the distance." Felipe also attempted to calm viewers' nerves about travelling to the island, he said: "If you are worried about the flight, it's also safe. Flights that cross on that region are cancelled. So the maximum is you'll have your flight cancelled if you need to cross any of those countries," he said. He went on to say: "I'll be coming back next month, it's safe here. But if you are coming from a place where you need to cross the countries that are at war, then most likely your flight will be cancelled, if not it's all good. Flights between those countries are the only ones affected, and they issued warnings which stopped the flights. Flight from and to Cyprus are fine." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Amazon's cooling blanket is the 'best thing ever' for night sweats and 19% off

The Ailemei Direct Cooling Blanket is currently on sale at Amazon, with almost 20% slashed off the usual price tag and it's perfect for combatting night sweats during the heatwave Warm summer days may be delightful, but the hot and sticky nights are not. There's nothing worse than tossing and turning in bed, too hot to sleep - and those who already suffer from night sweats feel the heat even more. Moreover, for those who enjoy having a blanket over them at night, regular duvets simply don't suffice in the summer. That's why a cooling blanket could be an excellent solution, providing the comfort needed at night while keeping users pleasantly cool. Currently, Amazon is offering a deal on the Ailemei Direct Cooling Blanket for Night Sweats, now nearly 20% off at £21.94. The specialist blanket is crafted from mica nylon and Japanese cold fibre to help keep its users feeling fresh on hot nights, and it's nice and lightweight as well. Breathable and comfortable, the blanket wicks away heat and claims to lower internal temperature by about 2C. Plus, it's machine and hand washable, making it easy to maintain. If this cooling blanket isn't appealing to shoppers, they could try Dunelm's Fogarty Cooling Cotton Duvet Cover with their existing summer duvet. Ranging between £9.20 and £32 depending on bedding size, the simple plain duvet cover comes in colours including sage green, white and blush pink, reports the Daily Record. Alternatively, Debenhams offers the Slumberdown Cool Sleep Ultra Cool Nylon Summer Duvet/Blanket for between £46.50 and £78, depending on the size required. The duvet is designed to draw heat away and is said to be twice as cool to the touch as standard polyester blankets. The Ailemei Direct Cooling Blanket, however, has become a hit with buyers, boasting a 4.4-star average rating. One satisfied customer enthused: "Absolutely brilliant! You literally put it on and can feel the cooling straight away! It's very light and has two layers, it's a slippery type of fabric. I like having a blanket and get too hot under them, this is great to combat that!". Another described it as "the best thing ever", confessing: "I wish I'd bought it earlier, perfect for hot summer nights, lightweight, comfortable." Further praise came from a third buyer who exclaimed: "Absolutely blooming marvellous. Cooled me down on many a hot flush! Recommended." However, not all reviews are glowing, one shopper noted: "I didn't find this cooling, however it definitely stopped me sweating and therefore definitely had a more comfortable sleep. I like the way it is very thin but has a nice weight to it so it's easy to sleep under! Would recommend but not if your expecting it to actually be cool to the touch." But for those in search of relief during balmy evenings, the Ailemei Direct Cooling Blanket may offer an ideal reprieve from the heat.
