Soccer-Palace fans head to FA Cup final still hurting from 1990
The semi-finals and final that year were arguably the most dramatic in the competition's long and storied history and remain the emotional high and low point of every Palace fan who watched them.
Palace were struggling in the top flight after promotion and had been humiliated 9-0 by Liverpool early in the season.
In the Cup they were hardly pulling up trees either, beating lower league Portsmouth, Huddersfield Town, Rochdale and Cambridge United to reach the semi-finals for the first time since they lost to Southampton as a third division team in 1976.
Facing runaway champions-elect and FA Cup holders Liverpool again in the semis look an insurmountable barrier and an Ian Rush goal had the Reds ahead at halftime at Villa Park.
Things then went crazy as Mark Bright and Gary O'Reilly gave Palace a shock lead. Two goals in two minutes put Liverpool back in front, only for Andy Gray to stun the odds-on favourites in the 88th minute to force extra time.
Amazingly, it was Palace who snatched victory in the 109th minute via Alan Pardew, who would later manage the club.
It was the first year that both semi-finals were live on TV and barely had the excitement abated when similarly unfancied Oldham ran out to face Manchester United at Maine Road.
The second division team had not beaten top-flight opposition in 66 years but accounted for four that season in a double cup run that caught the nation's imagination.
Playing vibrant, attacking football under Joe Royle, Oldham twice came from behind to draw 3-3 after extra time - meaning a remarkable 13 goals had been scored on a day of unimaginable drama. United ended Oldham's dream when they snatched a 2-1 victory six minutes from the end of extra time in the replay.
ALL-ENGLISH TEAM
The Palace side who lined up at Wembley were the last all-English team to play in the final while United's were the last all-UK lineup to win it.
United manager Alex Ferguson was under huge pressure to deliver a trophy four years after arriving at Old Trafford, but Palace struck first through O'Reilly.
Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes turned it round and United seemed on course for victory, only for Ian Wright to come off the bench for the most wonderful 20 minutes of his life.
The former non-league striker had been sidelined for much of the season with a twice-broken leg, but exploded into action to equalise with virtually his first touch and then put the Londoners ahead early in extra time.
"It's still the greatest moment I've had in my career – easily – simply because of everything that it had entailed up to that point," Wright told the Palace website on Friday.
"My emergence at Palace, and to reach the biggest stage in English football, and all of a sudden I'm on the Wembley pitch.
"And then what happened after that was the stuff of fairytales. It really, really was."
However, as the Palace fans sang in dreamland, Hughes broke their hearts with a late equaliser.
The replay five days later could not live up to everything that had gone before and though Palace battled gamely, United won it 1-0 with a goal by Lee Martin.
It was a victory that launched Ferguson and United on their dizzying journey of success - that included another extra-time FA Cup final win over Palace in 2016 after the Scot had retired - but one that left a gaping hole in the hearts of the losers.
"I would have loved to have won that FA Cup and we were only seven minutes away," said Wright, who went on to win multiple trophies including two FA Cups with Arsenal. "Seven minutes. Honestly I still can't take it." Wembley Stadium England Crystal Palace Manchester City

England Coach Slams 'Strange' Akash Deep For Duckett Send-Off: 'Many Would Elbow'
Last Updated: England assistant coach has slammed Akash Deep's 'strange' send-off to Ben Duckett, saying many in county cricket would have 'dug an elbow' into the Indian pacer. England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick didn't take Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett kindly, calling it 'strange' and one where 'many good people' would have reacted by 'digging an elbow' into the bowler. Akash and Duckett were having a ton of too-and-fro at the Oval during the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test, carrying on from their needle in previous games. Duckett was heard telling Akash that he couldn't get him out and proceeding to hit him for brilliant, audacious scoops over the wicketkeeper. But Akash eventually got him out, making him glove one scoop to Dhruv Jurel. As Duckett was walking back, the Indian pacer put his arm around the English opener. It looked innocuous on the field — though Duckett didn't seem happy at all — but some felt it was extraordinary. 'Strange, really. I don't think you really need to be putting your arm around someone, but nothing was really said, was it?" Trescothick said in the press conference after the day's play. 'You just don't really see it. We were chatting on the balcony there and I know many good people playing in county cricket would have said something or dug the elbow in, or something like that," he added. Duckett's wicket was huge in the context of the game. He and Zak Crawley had put up a 92-run stand and were taking the game away from India rapidly when Akash struck. England eventually collapsed to 247, managing just a 23-run lead over the visitors. India responded with a score of 75/2 at Stumps. It wasn't the only controversial incident of the day. Trescothick also spoke about Prasidh Krishna and Joe Root's heated argument later in the same innings. While the Indian pacer was criticised for riling up a usually calm Root, he clarified that he had only bantered him by saying that Root 'looked in good shape'. 'He [Prasidh] obviously tried to get after him [Root] and spark him up a little bit," Trescothick remarked. 'Maybe they have seen him play so well over the last couple of games that India tried a different approach, and Joe bit back, as sometimes he does. Normally, he is the sort of guy who just laughs and giggles and allows things to happen, but today he just chose a different route. Everyone has their own method of dealing with that sort of approach, and today Joe bit back." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jasprit Bumrah Sacrificed Playing 5th Test For This T20 Tournament In 2026 Says BCCI Source : Report
India vs England 5th Test is ongoing at Oval while Indian bowlers led by Mohammed Siraj has been able to dismiss the English team on 247, the void of their ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah is clearly seen. Bumrah was officially released from India's squad for the fifth and final Test against England. This decision, however, was not abrupt. The BCCI had already clarified that Bumrah would only participate in three of the five Tests as part of a pre-planned workload management strategy. The move was aimed at avoiding a repeat of the injuries he suffered after playing all five Tests in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following the conclusion of the Test series against England, Team India will now turn its attention to preparations for the Asia Cup 2025. With the tournament set to begin in September, the Indian team is eager to ensure that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah remains in peak condition. A major update has now surfaced regarding his participation in the upcoming event. Bumrah's Availability for Asia Cup 2025 Despite facing criticism for missing two Tests particularly with India trailing 1-2 in the series Bumrah adhered to the pre series plan. He played the Leeds, Lord's, and Manchester matches, taking 14 wickets at an average of 26. Ahead of the Oval Test, India made four changes, resting Bumrah alongside Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur, and Anshul Kamboj, and bringing in Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and Akash Deep. Long-Term Test Future According to a PTI report, Bumrah is unlikely to feature in full five-match Test series for the remainder of his career. His next potential opportunity for such a series would be against Australia in 2027. Until then, India's Test schedule includes shorter two-match series against South Africa and the West Indies. 'There is an Asia Cup around the corner, and the T20 World Cup is also there. He would want to play those events. Considering his body, he can't play every game. He needs to be managed with extra care. Playing him at The Oval would have been a huge risk. Going forward, there needs to be a clear plan on how to manage Bumrah's Test career,' a BCCI source told PTI. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged the complexity of the issue, stating that the team decided to respect Bumrah's request. In the three Tests he did play, Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs, and his fitness management has now become a central topic for selectors. A review meeting is expected after the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, during which officials will discuss Bumrah's Test future. Asia Cup 2025 Schedule The 2025 Asia Cup will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28 and will follow a T20I format. India will begin their campaign against the United Arab Emirates on September 10, followed by a marquee clash with Pakistan on September 14. Their final group-stage match is scheduled against Oman on September 19. A top-two finish in the group will secure them a place in the Super Fours, from where the top two teams will advance to the final on September 28. While Indian fans are still protesting that the tournament shoulln't happen, it most likely looks happening.
