Melaka's Pulau Konet joins energy corridor project as state pushes maritime, oil development
MELAKA, April 27 — Pulau Konet has been gazetted as part of the Melaka Energy Corridor (MEC) development project, which is aimed at expanding the Telok Gong Industrial Area, in Alor Gajah.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said that among the proposed developments under the MEC were the development of maritime industries as well as shipping support industries, oil and gas support industries, the construction of a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and infrastructure facilities to support industrial growth.
'The project involves land reclamation concessions around Pulau Konet covering an area of 202.34 hectares, which is the main component of the MEC,' he told the State Assembly here today.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Low Chee Leong (PH–Kota Laksamana) about the plan to develop Pulau Konet as part of the MEC.
Earlier, to a question from Datuk Rosli Abdullan (BN–Kuala Linggi), whether there was a proposal to develop Pulau Konet as a tourism product for marine and coastal recreation areas, Ab Rauf said the island was not suitable for development as a tourist area despite its unique feature.
Citing the results of the Fisheries Department's monitoring, he said, it was found that there were only a few coral reefs and no ornamental fish species in the rocky area.
To a supplementary question from Datuk Zaidi Attan (BN–Serkam) regarding the construction of a sovereignty monument on Pulau Konet, Ab Rauf said it was built on September 7, 2022, at a cost of RM80,000 as a symbol of the government's presence and supervision of the country's waters.
'The intention of the National Security Council (MKN) in placing the national sovereignty monument there is to uphold and affirm the country's sovereignty over the islands that belong to the country,' he said. — Bernama

Online investment scams cost men in Padawan, Sibu losses totalling over RM270,000
Photo for illustration purposes only. — Photo from Pixabay KUCHING (June 13): Two separate cases of online investment scams were reported in Padawan and Sibu in mid-March this year, leaving the victims with losses totalling over RM270,000. Sarawak commissioner of police Datuk Mancha Ata said the first case involved a local salesman in his 60s from Padawan. 'The victim was initially drawn to a Facebook advertisement that promised high returns within a short period. Upon expressing interest, he was contacted via WhatsApp by an unknown individual posing as an investment administrator. 'Guided through the process, the victim proceeded to transfer about RM150,000 in multiple transactions to a bank account provided by the suspect,' he said in a statement. Mancha said the salesman became suspicious when he was unable to withdraw his supposed commission and later discovered that the investment company did not exist. A similar case was reported in Sibu, involving a labourer in his late 40s. The victim found an online advertisement promoting investments purportedly offered by a company named 'Silvercape Capital Sdn Bhd'. Mancha said the man was contacted by someone claiming to be a company agent, who persuaded him to invest and later informed him that he had made substantial profits. 'However, when attempting to retrieve his earnings, the victim was told that additional payments were required. In a further twist, the suspect impersonated a government-linked entity called 'Global Anti Scam' and instructed the victim to transfer more funds to process the refund. 'The victim, believing the directive to be legitimate, conducted several online bank transfers totalling about RM120,000,' he said. Both victims realised they had been deceived after receiving no returns or refunds as promised. Anwar: Govt paid RM486k for Dr M's official visit to Japan
MELAKA: The government bore almost half a million ringgit in costs for former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the government had allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Dr Mahathir. "There are existing provisions for former prime ministers to apply for government support for official travel, and if the sitting prime minister approves, the government will bear the cost, including for Tun Mahathir, who recently requested to attend the Nikkei conference in Japan. He applied, and I approved it. I believe the delegation comprised around seven people. "People ask me why we paid for him. He is entitled to apply, but the decision lies with the sitting prime minister. I decided to approve the RM486,000 for him to go to Japan. "I just don't want anyone to misunderstand. I don't want to take a negative attitude. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his travel application," Anwar told reporters here today. On May 30, Dr Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, a platform he has attended regularly over the years. In a separate development, Anwar said he was giving time to two cabinet ministers who recently submitted resignation letters, encouraging them to reconsider their decisions. The prime minister said he had received letters from the two ministers applying for leave and resignation, but had only approved their leave for now. "Let them think about it. Personally, I would prefer that they rejoin the cabinet," he said. The ministers in question, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, reportedly submitted their resignations following defeats in recent party elections. Anwar was speaking after attending an organisational empowerment seminar and a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders here today. Also present were PKR vice-presidents Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, secretary-general Senator Fuziah Salleh, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek, Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, and Hang Tuah Jaya division chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. During the seminar, Anwar urged PKR members to heal internal rifts and put aside dissatisfaction following the party polls last month. He also emphasised the need for unity and maturity for the party's greater mission. "Imagine this, I can work with Umno, even hugging it out. Surely, we can move past our internal disagreements too. Let's move on for the bigger agenda," he added.
