Melaka CM lauds Chinese primary school's move to set up dedicated classroom for Islamic studies
MELAKA: Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh lauds a move by a Chinese primary school in Bertam Ulu here to introduce a dedicated Islamic studies classroom for its Muslim pupils. The Melaka Chief Minister described the gesture as a powerful symbol of unity and mutual respect in a multiracial society. "I am impressed by the initiative of SJK(C) Bertam Ulu to introduce a dedicated classroom for religious studies. "The commendable move by the school was also supported by the Bertam Ulu Chinese New Village Development and Safety Committee," he told The Star after visiting the school on Tuesday (May 29). Ab Rauf said the classes are aimed at the more than 100 Muslim pupils enrolled at the school. "I am emotionally touched by the strong sense of unity demonstrated here. "Bertam Ulu has been a melting pot of cultures for a very long time and this initiative reflects the true spirit of harmony that we cherish in the state,' he said. Ab Rauf said that the state government remains committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that all communities, regardless of race or religion, are supported equally. "This is a core value of our administration, we stand united and reject anything that attempts to divide us,' he said. Ab Rauf noted that the school management had relayed the concerns and aspirations of the teaching staff, particularly regarding the increasing number of Malay pupils, who now make up over 40% of the school's population. 'One of the school's main requests is for a new building, which would include a specially designed classroom for Islamic Education to allow pupils to learn in a more conducive environment. 'The current facilities are already overcrowded due to the growing student population," he said. Ab Rauf said the request for a new building was approved under the 9th Malaysia Plan (RMK-9), but it has remained pending. He assured the school's management that the state government would do its utmost to help bring the project to fruition. 'We will provide an official response to the request from SJK(C) Bertam Ulu for a new school building, ' he added. On a separate note, Ab Rauf said he hopes the concessionaire managing the state's stage bus service would take greater responsibility by enhancing the quality of its drivers' training. He said the concessionaire of the service, which is commonly known as "Pink Bus", was appointed by the Transport Ministry. Ab Rauf Yusoh said he made the call following a recent fatal accident involving a stage bus and growing complaints from the public over reckless driving of the stage buses that puts other road users at risk. 'Many locals have attributed these incidents to poor driving conduct, with some drivers displaying negligence. "There have been cases where carelessness has led to accidents,' he said. On May 26, the media reported that a subcontractor of a utility company was killed after a car, which was parked on a roadside, was rammed by a stage bus along the Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) route at Sungai Petai here The crash, which occurred at around 4.55pm on May 26, claimed the life of 23-year-old Muhammad Aiman Mohd Farid, who was believed to have been thrown from the vehicle into a drain. The 22-year-old driver of the car, Muhammad Hakimi Hafiz Baharin, sustained bodily injuries. Following the incident, the 37-year-old bus driver was remanded for three days starting Tuesday (May 27) to assist in the investigation.

RM450mil flood mitigation project in Melaka gets green light
ALOR GAJAH: The federal government has approved RM450 million in funding for the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) in Masjid Tanah, aimed at addressing recurring floods in the area. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project will span a 15km stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru, and will include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan. "This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah," he told reporters after visiting a Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria. Also present were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said the DID is implementing RM3.3 million worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations, and river maintenance works. Two existing flood retention ponds, Durian Daun and Solok Duku, are also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85 million, with completion expected by December. On a separate matter, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents. Melaka govt calls for improved training for stage bus drivers
MELAKA: The Melaka Government has urged the concessionaire managing the state's stage bus service to take greater responsibility by enhancing the quality of its drivers' training. The service, commonly known as "Pink Bus," is managed by a concessionaire appointed by the Transport Ministry. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh made this call following a recent fatal accident involving a stage bus and growing public complaints about reckless driving. "Many locals attribute these incidents to poor driving conduct, with some drivers displaying negligence. There have been cases where carelessness has led to accidents," he said on Wednesday (May 28). He spoke after attending a grassroots programme with local Chinese community leaders under the "Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat" initiative at SJK(C) Bertam Ulu. Ab Rauf said the state government is not involved in driver selection or operational aspects, as the contract is awarded by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). However, the safety of Melaka residents remains a top priority. "I urge the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and traffic police to intensify educational and enforcement efforts to instil greater discipline among bus drivers." "I take these accidents very seriously, especially when there are clear signs of negligence and inefficiency," he said. He expressed hope that the concessionaire company would enhance its training programmes to prevent future tragedies. Sg Linggi poised for ecotourism spotlight
MELAKA: Sungai Linggi is set to become a key ecotourism destination aimed at stimulating economic growth in rural areas, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. The Melaka Chief Minister said the Sungai Linggi Eco Cruise is expected to be launched on Sept 1 and will be promoted as a fresh tourism product for the state. 'This is a brand new package – one on a classically themed boat – offering a river journey and showcasing Sungai Linggi's natural beauty,' he said after launching the state government's monthly assembly at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here yesterday. The event is organised by the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM). Ab Rauf said PPSPM will also be rolling out other new tourism products. He said the Melaka sea cruise, featuring island-hopping and snorkelling packages, as well as a premium cruise experience, are among the latest attractions. 'Additionally, two more products under PPSPM will soon be introduced in Jasin, namely the Sungai Rambai Eco Cruise and a boat service at Tasik Chinchin. 'These packages are designed to highlight the scenic charm of Melaka's rivers and lakes,' he said. Commenting further about the Sungai Linggi Eco Cruise, Ab Rauf said visitors can look forward to an hour's river cruise from the mouth of Sungai Linggi to the Telok Berembang jetty, with meal packages also available. 'This new attraction will offer a relaxing cruise experience complemented by dining options for visitors,' he added.
