Loving Giving Local: Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperatives Member to Member Foundation

Yahoo06-02-2025

Helping to keep the lights and heat on for some residents of northwest Pennsylvania is being made possible with a little help from Loving Giving Local.
Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperatives Member to Member Foundation was the lucky random recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express.
Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperative provides electric service to 20-thousand members in all or part of five counties in northwestern Pennsylvania. Powered up since 1937, it's the first electric cooperative in Pennsylvania.
There's a command center at the NW REC's headquarters in Cambridge Springs. From there, staff can monitor power outages and service interruptions with state-of-the-art technology and monitor and prepare for adverse weather conditions that could cause power disruptions.
Line crews work around the clock restoring service and providing routine maintenance both in the field and from its headquarters.
The Cooperative doesn't have customers. It has members. When members have a hard time paying their electric bill, the cooperative Member to Member Foundation can help.
According to Emily Sonntag of NW REC, 'Each member can apply and they get allocated up to $300 if they're approved.' She added, 'We're really, we're just trying to aid our members. It's no secret that costs are rising and it's harder to get by, so we want to ensure that our members know that we are here for them. We are actually owned by our members so everything we do, they are at the heart of it.'
According to Sonntag, this week's Loving Giving Local donation of $250 from Auto Express is going to the Member-to-Member Foundation's annual meat raffle. 'So, the aim of this raffle is to raise funds for our Member-to-Member Foundation and to support those within our community. So we actually purchase the meat from the 4h kids at the Crawford County Fair and it's really an environment we want to have within our community, so that's what we'll use those funds for.'
Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'For us to bring Loving Giving Local to Member to Member today and to learn what Member to Member does which is provide electric to the rural community and to help out with that electric to people in need, so for us to be able to deliver a check today and to learn this check we bring is going to youth in our community whether its local 4h club or since it's going to stick right here in our community, that's what loving giving local is all about,' Askins said.
Each week JET 24 and Auto Express donate $250 to a randomly selected Erie area non-profit organization.

Loving Giving Local: Rhoxon Productions

Movie enthusiasts will benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. A local movie production company that sponsors a film festival is this week's recipient. Rhoxon Productions got a financial gift from Auto Express Resale Center. Rhoxon is an Erie-based non-profit independent film company that creates organic stories that promote a positive change. Besides creating art, Rhoxon strives to create jobs and educational opportunities in the film industry. 'Our last few projects have been about healing and about coping, and our next two are about revamping the social justice system,' said Katie Nixon, RhoxonProductions co-founder. 'That's sort of our creative endeavors, and we also create educational opportunities for people to learn how to do this professionally.' Nixon says Rhoxon has a vision of creating 50 new jobs in the film industry here. And she insists you no longer have to be on the East or West Coast to have a film career. 'No, the landscape has changed so much. Even Netflix has created their new studio out in Jersey. It's not just that you have be in New York or LA,' she explained. 'Erie is kinda a really interesting place. You have beach, you have woods, you have city, you have country all within 15 minutes of each other.' That landscape diversity, Nixon said, makes Northwest Pennsylvania the perfect place for shooting movies. This week's Loving Giving Local donation will help support an upcoming film festival. Nixon said, 'We started the only multi-genre film festival here in Erie. It's the Lake Effect Film Festival, which will be in September. So that money will go to help make that event possible.' After making his check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'We're pretty fortunate to have Rhoxon in our community and they're already doing great things. So for us to be able to deliver loving giving local and to learn the donation we bring is going toward their film festival, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said. Evidence That Mazda's Next MX-5 Miata Will Switch To Electric

This is the ICONIC SP concept on display during the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. It is highly ... More expected that this concept will influence the next MX-5. (Photo by Jun Sato/WireImage) The rumors flying around concerning which way the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata's powertrain will go appear to have reached a climax. And according to Britain's Auto Express magazine, the answer seems to be — fully electric, or at least an EV powertrain will be optional as will an all-new ICE unit. The current model 'ND' version of the MX-5 has been on the market for more than ten years now and has practically become the antithesis of increasingly heavy electric sports cars like the MG Cyberster, Lotus Evija and Maserati GranTurismo Folgore. Hovering at around 2200 lbs since its inception way back in 1989, the tiny Mazda has stayed true to its original philosophy — lightweight sports. Auto Express reports that it has uncovered patents, filed in the U.S. of the MX-5 Miata with electric power. These patents reveal batteries located in the transmissions tunnel in a coupe that can only be interpreted as the next-gen MX-5. The construction in the patent images goes against the typical pure EV 'skateboard' architecture which could make it difficult to reproduce the low-to-the-ground driving position we see in all previous roadsters. Battery placement in the transmission tunnel is not new, with the most recent Lamborghini Revuelto's employing a 3.8kWh pack in its tunnel. While Mazda's new setup is pure electric, the Lamborghini uses its battery to complement a plug-in hybrid system. The current Mazda MX-5 RF Sport. (Photo by National Motor Museum/Heritage Images via Getty Images) The MX-5's conventional size, form, and weight distribution have been maintained by using this somewhat creative approach to battery integration. In addition to the transmission tunnel, Mazda has incorporated batteries behind both seats, similar to the layout in the upcoming Porsche Cayman EV. Although it isn't stated in the patents, the necessity of a "transmission tunnel" in the first place clearly implies that the technology is built on a shared architecture between an internal combustion engined car with a conventional gearbox and a pure-EV. Mazda realizes that going full electric with its flagship sports car is too extreme and financially risky, so it's hedging its bets and will offer an EV and an ICE version. According to Mazda's application, "the yaw moment of inertia can be further reduced because the battery is installed in the tunnel portion, allowing the vehicle's center of gravity to be near the middle of the vehicle.' Mazda's well-known "Jinba-ittai" (horse and rider as one) philosophy has made the MX-5 seem more agile since its inception. The "yaw of inertia" that Mazda is referring to here is basically the vehicle's directional change, so decreasing this helps make a car handle better. While the British magazine mentions that Mazda has not leaked any information on the potential battery size yet, we can be reasonably sure that it will get a unit larger than the 35.5kWh battery in the MX-30 SUV, which was prematurely canceled after its poor 100-mile range forced its exit from the U.S. lineup. Given that the MX-5 has always been rear-wheel-drive, and given that the patent image shows a single electric motor behind the seats, we can expect the new 'NE' model to carry on the rear-drive tradition. What will the new MX-5 look like? The company revealed the drop-dead good-looking, rotary-powered Iconic SP concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show (now called the less impactful 'Japan Mobility Show'!) which the magazine suggests will influence the next MX-5's styling. However, the patent application, which is merely named "electric automobile," does not confirm that the MX-5 would be electric-only. Earlier this year, Mazda unveiled its "multi-solution strategy" to provide customers with multiple powertrain sources, including battery electric vehicles, hybrids, and internal combustion engines. As a result, we expect Mazda's new internal-combustion Skyactiv-Z engine to power the "NE" model, which will replace the current "ND" generation MX-5 later this decade. According to the company, the new powertrain will meet Euro 7 emissions regulations and serve as the foundation of Mazda's lineup "for small products in the electrification era.' So expect the next MX-5 to offer two very different MX-5 Miata models by 2027, one delivering electric-only power and the other fitted with a conventional gasoline engine.

Flawed hybrid car efficiency data to stifle UK EV sales and propagate pollution

Despite this, the government has stated that emissions targets for manufacturers will continue to use the old figures and test cycle. This, T&E fears, means that drivers will continue to be 'misled by the 'low emission' image of PHEVs portrayed by carmakers' and that the UK may struggle to hit its lofty climate targets as a result. In fact, the European transport sustainability group believes this mixed messaging surrounding PHEVs could see as many as 500,000 additional new cars using the tech hitting the road by 2030, in turn jeopardising the sales of cleaner, fully-electric cars. T&E has called on the government to bear in mind the new updated plug-in hybrid emissions figures and regulations before pressing ahead with its ZEV mandate changes to avoid 'duping' the public. Such a sentiment is backed by Professor of Business and Sustainability at the University of Cardiff, Peter Wells, who told Auto Express that T&E's analysis was 'entirely correct, both in terms of the real-world performance of PHEVs, and the actual cost to consumers. It is a flawed policy.' Wells continued, saying: 'We too easily forget that the point of all of this is to slow down the rate of climate change. Once again the government has allowed itself to be distracted by short-term economic expediency.' Auto Express has approached the UK Department for Transport for comment, but we have yet to receive a response. Take a look at the best electric car deals on the market right now… READ SOURCE
