Loving Giving Local: Erie Cancer Wellness Center

If you're in a fight against cancer, doctors and nurses at your local cancer center help you with the medical journey. Many of your other needs during and after treatment can be found at the Erie Cancer Wellness Center. Jackie Wassel. Executive Director said, 'What we do is really just fill the need for mind, body, spirit support. We have anything from education resources, wellness and movement classes. We have nutrition education, reiki, massage, you name it. Community. Really, a safe space for people to come so they're not alone on this journey. ' The Cancer Wellness Center is a calm, attractive space that offers recreational and educational opportunities, a library, a room for children, a space for exercise and movement classes, and even a wig salon providing dozens of options for those who need hair. The cancer wellness center also offers group therapy and has a space that many organizations use for that. All the services available here are available to cancer patients and their families free of charge. Wassel said, 'There is already a huge financial burden on those that are faced with cancer, and we want to make sure they have no other worries as far as costs go here. And luckily, we have a very generous community that provides us with the support to continue this great work. This week's Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Ctr will be used for something new coming to the Wellness Center, programming specifically for men. 'They are a population that is difficult,' Wassel suggested. 'Ya know, difficult to serve and bring in, so we're hoping to expand that.' In making his donation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local and learn all that they do, not only for the patient going through cancer but the family members to help them along their journey, so for us to be able to bring that donation today and to learn that it's going to one of their men programs to help men with cancer and family of men with cancer, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about and we're excited to be able to be here and bring this donation.' LGL: Friends of the Erie County Public Library

Borrow a book, buy a book, or share a book. It all happens at the Erie County Library. And this week, the Friends of the Library got a visit from Loving Giving Local. There is so much more to the Erie County Library System than just books. But it's the books that keep the place going. Thanks to a volunteer group called the Friends of the Library. 'This is kind of a community center as I see it. It's a place where people can enjoy lifelong learning. You hear the pitter-patter of little feet coming in. Parents and grandparents bringing their kids in, but also adults come in, and they can learn all kinds of wonderful opportunities. learn through the idea lab, how to make things, even how to start a business,' said Many of those opportunities are not funded by tax dollars. That's where the friends come in. They've been helping support programs since the 1980s. 'We're kind of a merry bunch of volunteers. None of us are paid staff. We've got probably over 400 members who help us with our book sales, they help us in our store, they help us collect books,' said Marcy Bencivenga of Friends of the Library. Those donated books from the public are sorted and recycled at a number of used book sales throughout the year. The next one is the Great American Book Sale at the Flo Fabrizio Ice Center. Mark your calendar, June 15-19. Here you can pick up a summer of great reading for just a few bucks. While it's the friends that raise money for the library, it's the library director and staff that decide where to spend it. 'So we use that funding to do programs for children, to do our regular story time, to fund things that happen in the idea lab,' Jessica Spitulski, Erie Co. library director. 'All of the programming that the library does is funded by the Friends, and so we here refer to them as the fairy godparents of the library because they're the ones that help us create the magic.' The friends got a helping hand in the form of a financial donation from Loving Giving Local. 'Well, the Friends of the Erie County Library have been in our community for over 40 years. So, for us to be able to deliver them a donation today, and learn today, this donation we bring will go into one of their youth programs, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center went on to say. LGL: WCTL Radio 106.3

An Erie Christian radio station, broadcasting to the region for 58 years, got a visit from JET 24's Loving Giving Local this week. Dan Sheldon and Lori Clapper host the morning show on WCTL Radio 106.3. The Christian radio station has been delivering it's message over the airwaves in the tri-state area since 1967. Nothing short of a miracle on today's radio landscape. 'What we love is that 58 years later and in radio, we're still local,' said WCTL morning show host Lori Clapper. 'We broadcast the latest Christian music. We have fun programs. I'm part of the morning show from 6:30 to 10 am. So, we have a family-friendly morning show, which is nice.' She added, 'It's important for families because they can turn us on and not be afraid of what the kids might hear.' WCTL Radio was the recipient of this week's Loving Giving Local of $250 from Auto Express. It comes at a good time, according to Clapper. 'We have been in the middle of a capital campaign where we are making improvements to not only to our physical building here but to our on-air presence as well. We are just thrilled to receive this gift as part of that. sort of icing on the cake to just help us move forward and into the future,' she said. After making the check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, WCTL has been on the air in our community for over 50 years. 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local here today and all they have going on at this location, we know the donation will go to great use, and that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said. WCTL is listener-supported radio. Besides the check from Loving Giving Local, there are ways you can help support his local ministry. 'Maybe you have something to offer that would help our building or help our on-air presence,' Clapper explained. 'We're open to discussing things like that as well.' And she added, 'If you're a business, you can also advertise.' The radio station conducts a spring and fall share-a-thon to raise funds to support their work.
