Livingston 0 Hibernian 2: Lions 'off the pace' as they miss out on Rangers clash

David Martindale's reaction to his side's Premier Sports Cup exit
By Ian Steven

A blockbuster quarter-final showdown with Rangers was a prize tantalisingly just out of reach for the Lions as Livingston collapsed to a buoyant Hibernian side in the Premier Sports Cup.

A first half header from Thibualt Klidje and a sickening late screamer from a full 30 yards out by Josh Mulligan put paid to any dreams David Martindale had of repeating his unrequited love affair with the League Cup, with the manager admitting his West Lothian side were off the pace and dealt a valuable lesson by their Edinburgh opponents.

'I don't think we deserved to go through', the manager stated. 'I think Hibs deserved to go through over the balance. I don't think there's much in the game. First half, we lose our goal at a really poor time, especially being a set play in the run up to half time.
'So you find yourself in the dressing room one down. But I don't think there was a lot in the game. I actually think we're dominating more of the ball in the first half. Second half. I thought the change of shape really helped us and put Hibs under a bit of pressure. We looked like a team that maybe could get the next goal, and then Mulligan comes up with a 30 yarder.
'That's an incredible goal, a good individual goal, and then the game runs away for us at that point.
'I think we spoke about this as a group. That's the first time our group have come up against a top six team, so we played Premiership opponents over the year. Ross County and St. Johnson last year and then obviously Kilmarnock this year twice, played Falkirk four times last year. So I think that was probably the real first test as a group, and there is a gap between that top section in the bottom six.
'So I Hibs are flying at the moment. They've got real positive energy around them. They're in a good moment and that was our first test, and I don't think there was a lot in the game. I think Hibs deserve to go through, but I don't think there was a lot in the game. And if you take out the Mulligan strike, I was fairly happy."

Livingston's only real chances came from a Robbie Muiread run through on goal, but the striker stumbled at the worst possible time, and a couple of Zak Rudden headers that flashed over the bar, leaving Martindale convinced the game had offered a valuable lesson to his charges against Premiership opposition.
'Wee bit off the performance. But that's the Premiership level. That's what you're up against. You kind of get crucified. We probably got away with mistakes last year in terms of maybe not dealing with the safe play properly, but we don't get punished.

"Maybe not getting pressure on the ball for 25-30 yards per year goal and you don't get punished. But that's what happens against the bigger clubs, the top six clubs.
'The players are gonna have to get their head around the fact that will the one difference from last year to this year is going to be the adversity from losing games of football, and it's really important that we don't allow that to bite into a working week. We'll deal with the moment today. We'll deal with that tomorrow. And then I'm not going to touch on it again.
"And we need to approach the season in a very similar vein in terms of one game at a time. Don't really look too much at a day. Don't really look too much about the past games. Don't use the negative energy, use the positive. Just focus on that next game.'

Rangers exact Jefte transfer profit revealed as Palmeiras deal announced and one more exit nears

Jefte has officially left the club and another fringe man looks set to follow Left-back Jefte has sealed a switch to Palmeiras - and has netted Rangers a bumper profit. ‌ The Brazilian joined the Light Blues from Fluminese last summer for just £600,000 after catching the eye on loan at APOEL. ‌ Record Sport understands a £6.5million payout has been landed for Jefte with the package set to include performance related add-ons and a sell-on clause. ‌ It means that the Ibrox side have turned a £5.9m profit minimum on the player and can look to reinvest a chunk of that in a new starting left-back. He's not the only player leaving either as it's being reported Jose Cifuentes is closing in on a move away of his own. MLS reporter Tom Bogert reports the Ecuador midfielder is on the verge of a loan move to Toronto FC. It's believed the deal is a loan until next summer with a buy option which Toronto can trigger should he prove a success back in MLS. Cifuentes was tipped as a game-changing signing by Michael Beale, who brought him to the club in 2023, but he's struggled to settle and since spent time on loan at Cruzeiro in Brazil and Aris in Greece. John McGinn is Hibs 'role model' for Josh Mulligan as rising star targets Scotland call up alongside hero

Mulligan has hit the ground running at Easter Road since making his summer switch from Dundee Josh Mulligan is delighted to be compared to John McGinn - but what the midfielder would love most is to join the former Hibs hero in the Scotland squad. ‌ Mulligan has hit the ground running at Easter Road since making his summer switch from Dundee. ‌ And the 22-year-old is hoping to create history with Hibs as they look to see off Legia Warsaw and reach the £5million Conference League proper. ‌ David Gray's side host the Poles in the playoff first leg tonight and Mulligan is desperate to build on his rich vein of form that has seen him likened to Scotland talisman and Aston Villa skipper McGinn. Mulligan, who scored his first Hibs goal with a top corner screamer in the weekend's Premier Sports Cup win at Livingston, said: 'McGinn is a great player, to be compared with some like that is a good compliment. 'But it's about focusing on my whole game and not getting caught up in comparisons although it is nice. 'He's a good role model. Especially in the last five years he's been a massive player for Scotland as well - probably one of the most influential players. Looking at him, he's someone you want to look at and strive for.' Mulligan is already a Scotland under-21 cap and is desperate to make the next step up to the full national team ahead of next month's opening World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Belarus. ‌ Hibs teammate Kieran Bowie earned his first cap earlier this summer and Mulligan is hoping his exposure to European football can help him catch national team boss Steve Clarke's attention. After playing his part in the agonising Europa League defeat to Midtjylland, Mulligan then had a key role in the 4-3 aggregate win over Partizan Belgrade. He added: 'Even with the under-21s playing for your country there is nothing like that feeling - it gives you a sense of what it would be like to make the step up and pull on that shirt. That would be the best achievement of my career. ‌ "That was a factor as well in coming here, you get more exposure, if you play well you get recognised. "Playing with better players makes you better, you pick things up without even realising it and I'm learning every day. "Other players my age have broken in, so I know it's possible. I just need to keep performing and see what happens. ‌ "It's not just me. Every player wants to be part of the World Cup qualifying. I just need to keep putting in performances, take it game by game and hopefully it comes.' Hibs striker Bowie's stunning goal in the third qualifying round aggregate win over Partizan Belgrade helped Hibs seal their progress and former under 21 team mate Mulligan admits the big striker is flourishing at European level. He added: 'I've played with him for a few years and always knew he was a good player. But since I came here and I've seen him he's really stepped up. He's maturing and it helps everyone, for me I look at him and I want to play with him.' ‌ And Mulligan, who has made seven appearances for Hibs so far, admits he is loving life in Leith as the big games keep on coming. He added: 'This is the reason why I came to this club — to play in games like this. I've loved every minute of it and I'm really excited for another one. "It's gone really well, from the moment I walked in it felt like the right decision. "I'm enjoying it and trying to make the most of these opportunities, because games like this don't come around often."

Neil Lennon hails Dunfermline ambition as striker hunt goes on after bids for St Johnstone's Makenzie Kirk

Neil Lennon has hailed Dunfermline's ambition as they continue their bid to land striking reinforcements. The Pars have had two six-figure bids turned down for St Johnstone's Makenzie Kirk, with the 21-year-old also attracting interest from clubs south of the border. It is expected the Fifers will now look elsewhere in their attempts to strengthen Lennon's options in attack. However, the willingness to spend money on what are seen as the right targets in the data-driven recruitment of co-owner James Bord is something that manager Lennon has welcomed. Over the last two transfer windows, fees and sell-on promises have been shelled out for the likes of Shea Kearney, Rory MacLeod, Keith Bray, Connor Young and Robbie Fraser. 'It shows the ambition of the owner and, again, the blueprint of what he wants to do,' said Lennon. 'Buy young and integrate them and build a successful team. That's just the way we're working at the minute. 'Some [bids] come off, some don't. So we'll keep plugging away. 'I would like to obviously add a little bit of experience to the squad if we can. But we'll cross that bridge when we need to. 'There's still plenty of time in the window yet for comings and goings. 'There's nothing at the minute. It's the on-going spinning of plates and we'll just wait and see what comes up.' When asked by Courier Sport specifically about Kirk, Lennon added: 'I don't want to talk about other players at other clubs.' Dunfermline's striking options are set to be strengthened anyway for Friday night's Fife derby against Raith Rovers, thanks to the return of Chris Kane. The former St Johnstone forward has been sidelined since injuring his knee in the 2-1 victory over Hamilton Accies in the Premier Sports Cup a month ago. Ex-Dundee United attacker MacLeod is still restoring his fitness after a stay in hospital with an abscess on his throat. But new signings Robbie Fraser and Jefferson Caceres are in line for possible debuts at Stark's Park. 'Chris is back training, so he should be in the squad for Friday,' added Lennon, who confirmed some players are likely to leave on loan in the coming days. 'So, obviously, that's a welcome boost for everyone. 'Rory's still recovering from his virus, so he'll be a little bit more down the line. '[Jefferson] may figure in the game on Friday. But, going forward, we're hoping to see a lot of him.'
