Bethesda officially reveals Oblivion Remastered, available today

Business Mayor23-04-2025

Bethesda is making The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered official just days after the game leaked. Oblivion Remastered is a remaster of the nearly 20-year-old game, developed by Virtuous. Oblivion Remastered is shadow dropping today, and it's available on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S right now for $49.99, or as part of Xbox Game Pass.
' Oblivion was a real defining moment in the series and for how we make games as a studio,' says Todd Howard, studio head of Bethesda. The remastered version of Oblivion has overhauled graphics for modern hardware, and includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions.
While the naming suggests this is a remaster of the original game, developer Virtuous has actually fully remade the title in Unreal Engine 5. Virtuous has produced several comparisons between the game's original 2006 release to Oblivion Remastered , and the differences are huge. Every single asset in the game was remade and created from scratch, and the game has a lot more realistic shadows.
There's even a big improvement to the lip sync parts of the game, thanks to the latest technologies in Unreal Engine 5. Gameplay has also been modernized, with audio, UI, and leveling systems all updated. The new leveling system is 'the best of both worlds' of Skyrim and Oblivion , and there have also been modifications to encumbrance, non-combat perks, and other mechanics.
Bethesda and Virtuous have even modernized and updated the third-person view in Oblivion and added sprinting to the game. There are improved UI for systems like Persuasion and Clairvoyance, as well as HUD, menu, and map reworks and improved enemy scaling. All characters have updated animations as a result of these big changes. Read More Honor of Kings gets a global rollout on June 20 on mobile
'We've modernized a lot, but it's still the same incredible adventure and the same carefully crafted world,' says Tom Mustaine, Bethesda's external projects and studio director, during a reveal stream.
Bethesda is also releasing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition , which includes bonus quests, unique armor, weapon, and horse armor sets, a digital artbook, and the official soundtrack.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster originally appeared in 2023, thanks to documents in the FTC's case against Microsoft's Activision Blizzard acquisition. An unannounced Fallout 3 remaster and another game in the Dishonored franchise were also part of Microsoft's documents.

Amazon is already making a movie about the 2023 OpenAI and Sam Altman boardroom drama

Amazon's MGM Studios is fast-tracking a movie called Artificial about OpenAI's 2023 boardroom drama that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and then rehired, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Luca Guadagnino ( Challengers , After the Hunt ) is in talks to direct and A-list actors including Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbero are reportedly interested. Shooting may start as soon as this summer in Italy and San Francisco. The timeline of OpenAI's travails took place over just a week and unfolded like a telenovela. It commenced with the shocking termination of Altman on November 17, 2024, reportedly for not being "consistently candid" with the board. Microsoft, a close OpenAI partner, was furious with the decision and announced shortly afterward that it was starting its own AI division with Altman at the head. Later, the entire OpenAI staff told the board in an open letter that it would resign and join the new Microsoft subsidiary if Altman didn't return to the company as CEO. Things were looking dire until the last minute when the board finally caved and hired Altman back. OpenAI's original board was also disbanded and replaced with a temporary three-man board. With that level of corporate intrigue and hundreds of billions of dollars at stake, it's easy to see why Amazon wants to be first with a movie on the subject. The movie could star Garfield as Altman, Barbero as CTO Mira Murati and Yura Borisov ( Anora ) as Ilya Sutskever, an OpenAI co-founder who spearheaded the charge to fire Altman.

Getting a Switch 2? Pick Up These 3 Nintendo Games, Too

If you're picking up a Switch 2 on launch day, you'll probably be picking up some of the brand-new titles landing on the Nintendo platform. But as exciting as these new games may be, there's also no better time to revisit the Switch's greatest hits. While first-party developers and popular AAA game publishers like Microsoft are bringing their games to the Switch 2, the best games on the console will still pull from Nintendo's back catalog. The Switch 2 is backward-compatible with the original Switch's game cartridges, letting you keep your library intact. Nintendo's website explains the virtual game card sharing system for the Switch and also confirmed that "Switch 2 editions" of existing games are in development -- these games will be vastly improved versions of Switch games, with better graphics, improved frame rates and in some cases, more content to play through. Seven separate Switch games will have Switch 2 editions on launch. They're mostly older games that pushed the original Switch's hardware to the limit, with a couple exceptions. Here are all of the confirmed Switch 2 upgrades so far. Every Switch game confirmed to be getting a Switch 2 Edition upgrade Nintendo CNET has compiled an extensive list of games getting a Switch 2 edition upgrade during the launch day release batch. These are the seven games we know are getting Switch 2 editions: Super Mario Party Jamboree Pokemon Legends: Z-A Metroid Prime 4 Beyond Kirby and the Forgotten Land Sid Meier's Civilization 7 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom If you want to know more about what kind of upgrades you can expect from a Switch 2 edition of an old game, we've collected all of the info here. Now Playing: Switch 2 Launch Games | Obvious Skill Issue 5 05:56 How much will Switch 2 Edition upgrades cost? Switch 2 Edition upgrades seem to be retailing for $20. Since Switch games retailed for $60, these upgrade costs are in line with the new normal for Switch 2 game prices. We also know that the Switch 2 Edition for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will both be free upgrades for anyone with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The games I wanted to see Switch 2 Editions for (and why) When Switch 2 Editions were first announced, there were three games I wanted to see upgrades for. As it turns out, they're all getting key improvements to coincide with the launch of the Switch 2. Here's why you should grab these games on the new Nintendo console. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Nintendo Developer Game Freak has struggled to make mainline Pokemon games work on the Switch. Sword and Shield's toxic "Dexit" controversy largely overshadowed the fact that the game had some of the most disappointing graphics on the console, and Pokemon and NPC models frequently suffered from sudden pop-ins as players explored the game's Wild Area. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet caught even more flak for its performance issues. The pop-in issue returned, but this time, distant models frequently skipped frames in their animation cycles. While the game was larger and more ambitious with a grander open world, the game's performance suffered as a result. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have both had a hard time reaching 30 frames per second outside of most towns, and certain areas like Kitakami and Tagtree Thicket absolutely tank the frame rate. Scarlet and Violet are getting free updates to support the games on the Switch 2's hardware, and we've seen proof that they'll finally run in 4K resolution at a consistent 60 frames per second. The graphical fidelity won't blow your mind, but the generation nine Pokemon games will finally get a chance to shine once they're unshackled from the crushing performance issues. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Tears of the Kingdom's art style does a lot of heavy lifting, but the Switch 2 can really help this game out. Nintendo There's no doubt that Tears of the Kingdom is a beautiful game, thanks in large part to its strong art direction and cel-shaded models that make the world feel vibrant and alive. Despite that, the game doesn't do much to improve on Breath of the Wild's visual fidelity, and it suffers from blurry, low-texture terrain that muddies up the experience. But Tears of the Kingdom's true sin lies with its performance. While the game fairly consistently reaches its 30 fps cap, there are sections of the game that drop the performance to 15 to 20 fps, which makes Tears of the Kingdom feel choppy and outdated. Areas like The Great Sky Island and the Depths, rainy days and even the core Ultrahand ability all push the Switch to its limit, and the game is drastically slower when you're in these areas or just trying to glue two items together. The Switch 2 Edition for Tears of the Kingdom is free with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and it's packing more than a facelift and a performance upgrade. While this upgrade will stabilize the game at 60 frames per second even during more taxing areas, the new Zelda Notes feature will also allow players to wield the Ultrahand more effectively than ever before. Ultrahand creations are the beating heart of Tears of the Kingdom's open world, and being able to import more builds will completely change the game. Kirby and the Forgotten Land The uncanny blend of real and cartoony graphics is a key part of the Forgotten Land, but the game is held back by some low-texture models. Nintendo Plucked out of Dream Land and plopped down into an eerily real world, the titular pink power puff stands in stark contrast to his environment in this 3D Kirby game. Kirby and the Forgotten Land creates a world that, in many ways, visually clashes with the protagonist and his enemies, which makes it more interesting to explore. The new Forgotten Land is an analog to the real world, and it's modeled very differently from the usual cartoony landscapes and character designs that players have come to expect from the series. While the Switch 2 Edition of Kirby and the Forgotten Land doesn't do much to fine-tune the graphical inconsistency in the base game (stages like Scale the Cement Summit stand out as winners, while Natural Plains and Winter Horns look disappointing in comparison) it adds a lot of new content that isn't available on the original Switch. In fact, the Switch 2 upgrade pack for this game is more like a DLC expansion. This $20 Switch 2 upgrade pack includes an entirely new campaign -- when a meteor strikes the Forgotten Land, it completely warps the landscape. Every single level has received a "b-side," which reintroduces familiar platforming challenges with new twists and turns. This Switch 2 upgrade is a great excuse to return to one of Kirby's best platforming adventures.

Witcher 4 Tech Demo: Why All The Suspicion?

It was over ten years ago when The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt took the video game world by storm. Since then, fans have been hungrily gobbling up any information about CD Projekt Red's sequel, The Witcher 4. Well, they're in luck, as a brand new tech demo dropped for the game. While this has led to a lot of people excited about the title, there has also been an intriguing counter reaction: suspicion. A swathe of people online think The Witcher 4 looks a bit too good to be true—and they're being vocal about it. This reaction is fascinating, because it shows the impact increased exposure to teasers and adverts has had on the public. Before we get there though, some context. The Witcher 4 will be an open-world role playing game (RPG) where you take control of Ciri, an eponymous witcher. These figures hunt monsters in a fantasy world. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was a huge success, winning a range of Game of the Year awards and leading to a variety of other media, including a Netflix series that (originally) starred Henry Cavill. Yet, a decade has now passed since that title launched—and fans are clambering for more. This is where the tech demo comes in. Shown at the State of Unreal event, CD Projekt Red used an early development Unreal Engine 5 tech demo to showcase some of the technology behind the upcoming title. The company was keen to point out this wasn't in-game play, rather 'a deep dive into the technological foundation of the new Witcher saga.' This though hasn't stopped some people from reacting negatively to it: This begs a simple question: why? What is driving this suspicious reaction? There are a few things at play here. One of the more surface level is the confusion between a tech demo (something showing the capabilities of a game engine) and a trailer (something, hopefully, showing the game itself). Some appear irritated that this tech demo of The Witcher 4 is unlikely to actually look much like the game itself—even though that's not the point per se of a tech demo. Taking that argument of it being a tech demo is a little too surface level though. Instead, this suspicion about the trailer tells a more interesting and deeper story about the relationship between marketing and proof in media. The internet has exposed more and more people to adverts. Not only do individuals have to interact with advertising on billboards, television, or public transport, they are also inundated with them wherever they go online. While this has a variety of impacts, for this argument, the important idea is that people are now used to being advertised to, they're innately familiar with the practice. Broadly speaking, this means they're hyper aware of potentially being misguided about a product or title—especially if they care about it. A study on movie trailers entitled 'The Effects of Film Trailers on Shaping Consumer Expectations in the Entertainment Industry' found that when there's a divide between something in a trailer and the end product, people feel dissatisfaction. This is accelerated if it's a topic they care about, like The Witcher series. That's not all though. CD Project Red also has history with this difference between an advert (even if it is a tech demo) and the end product: What this leads to is one of distrust and suspicion. People are so used to advertising tactics that they're now tuned into how these practices can alter expectations and are, potentially, less willing to suspend their disbelief. Especially whey they've invested in a title. Ultimately, The Witcher 4 is one of the most anticipated games around. Yet the nature of the advertising industry and CD Projekt Red's previous titles has led to people not celebrating the tech demo, instead being suspicious of it. I would say we'll have to wait for gameplay footage, but I expect a similar response then. So how will we know if The Witcher 4 is any good? Well, we'll just have to wait for launch.
