I landed software engineering jobs at AWS and Walmart after moving to the US from India. Here are 4 things I did to build my network from scratch.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sushma Kukkadapu, a 28-year-old software engineer in Bentonville, Arkansas. The following has been edited for length and clarity.
I grew up in Hyderabad, India, where I got a bachelor's degree in computer science. In 2018, I came to the US to pursue my master's in software engineering at UT Arlington.
I started working for the AI labs at Sam's Club, which is owned by Walmart, in November 2023. I work on innovative automation, developing advanced forecasting computational solutions that transform financial forecasting, real-time system monitoring, and security compliance. Before Sam's Club, I worked at Amazon Web Services.
As an immigrant, I faced complexities in immigration and cultural adaptation, and I also had to build a professional network from scratch. I found four techniques that helped me design my career path to gain internships and then my full-time career.
1. Be proactive and start building your career as soon as possible
I volunteered at my university to set up a booth at the Grace Hopper Celebration, a major convention for women in computing where people come to find internship opportunities and network. I received a partial scholarship to attend the career fair, and my university paid for the trip expenses.
I secured my summer internship at McAfee by talking to a recruiter there who was also a graduate of UT Arlington. We connected, and I shared my journey with her. She loved my story and gave me an opportunity.
You need to start early during your first year of college or grad school. Talk to your university's career counselors and ask them what kind of scholarships and career fairs the universities represent. Can I volunteer there? Can you give me a scholarship to attend a certain program?
That way you can kick-start your career and seize an opportunity.
2. Find networking organizations relevant to you
Groups such as the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers hold careers fairs. Attending these can bring networking opportunities and, in turn, help secure internships and job offers. That's how I secured my summer internship in the Bay Area and how I first got industry exposure in the software domain in Silicon Valley.
The following year, I received a scholarship through the Grace Hopper Celebration, which offers student scholarships for women worldwide. It's a highly competitive process that involves writing an essay, and pitching why you deserve the scholarship.
I was selected for my second year to attend GHC free of cost, including accommodation and flights. That's when I realized the true potential of networking, which could lead to important job offers.
3. Try cold emailing, and don't wait for opportunities to come to you
Prior to attending GHC and other conferences, I cold-emailed the LinkedIn professionals who I knew were attending the conference. This helped me make connections and get into the interview pipeline faster.
I also talked to recruiters before attending GHC. This got me two rounds of interviews with Google Summer of Code, and they did my last round there in person before I landed the internship.
You must not wait for opportunities to come to you. Instead, a short message through LinkedIn, X, or GitHub can help you take a huge step forward.
4. Make the most of open-source technologies
Open source is a real buzzword in tech, but there are a lot of programs being developed on open source, where everybody can contribute to the code. That means the code is fully open to the public and people can plug their own solutions into it, tweak it, develop it, and build it to make it more useful.
I worked on several open-source contributions because they helped me write code at a more sophisticated level, which helped me have strong work experience on my résumé, which helped me land the Google internship.
Companies such as Lyft, Google, Apple, Microsoft, BNY Mellon, and others invited me to conference afterparties because I showcased my work as part of an open-source contribution on my LinkedIn. Recruiters looked for this and reached out to me.

Costco brings back huge perk members have missed
Caring about customers is generally a good practice for retailers. But it's especially important when you're a retailer like Costco that charges people money to get in the door. Costco raised its membership fees last year, bringing the annual cost of a basic Gold Star membership to $65 and the cost of an Executive membership to $130. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Even though Costco was overdue for a fee hike, it took a risk implementing one at a time when consumers were still reeling from inflation and being choosier with their spending. The recent fee increase also drove Costco's membership costs to a point where a Sam's Club membership is now considerably cheaper. Related: Costco makes major investment to fix member problem But Costco doesn't have to worry so much about losing members, despite its higher fees. That's because the company goes out of its way to offer outstanding customer service. Not only does Costco keep its prices competitive, but it also keeps close tabs on its inventory to make sure it's introducing fresh, new products on a regular basis. Costco also has an extremely flexible return policy. With very limited exceptions, members can get a refund for unwanted items at any time, even if there's nothing wrong with them. You'd think Costco's Executive membership wouldn't be so popular, given that it costs twice as much as a Gold Star membership. But roughly half of Costco members pay for the Executive tier. And it's because the Executive membership comes with a major perk that frequent Costco shoppers don't want to pass up. Purchases made with an Executive membership are eligible for a 2% cash back reward. That reward isn't dependent on having a certain credit card. Rather, it's a feature of the Executive membership itself. Related: Costco plans new checkout option members should love To see if the Executive membership makes sense, all members need to do is calculate their break-even point, which means figuring out how much annual spending it takes to recoup the upgraded membership costs. Based on Costco's current fee structure, the break-even point on the Executive membership is $3,250, meaning it takes $3,250 in eligible Costco purchases each year to earn $65 based on a 2% reward rate. Shoppers who visit Costco on a regular basis and know that their annual spending typically exceeds that threshold can feel confident sticking with an Executive membership, knowing they'll make up the higher fee with the rewards they rack up. For a good number of years, Costco's Executive membership didn't just offer the benefit of cash back on purchases. It also allowed Executive members to get in the door earlier than regular members. Costco did away with that perk in recent years, much to the disappointment of Executive members, who liked being able to shop while the store was less crowded. If your local Costco is offering this perk, your Executive membership might soon get you in the door 30 to 60 minutes early. That's a big deal for people who love Costco but can't stand battling crowds, or who need the early store access to be able to complete a shopping trip before heading to work. Given that Costco is constantly looking for ways to improve the member experience, this decision isn't surprising. And early shopping access for Executive members may be the first of many positive changes the company's management team introduces in the near term. During the company's most recent earnings call, Costco CEO Ron Vachris said the management team would take a closer look at warehouse club store hours following the success of expanding gas station hours on a national scale. Here's How Much Sam's Club Customers Buy When They Order Pizza Delivery
You can order pizza delivery from Sam's Club. The people who do are getting it with more than just toppings, loading up carts to the tune of triple-digit dollars. Sam's, the warehouse operation run by Walmart (WMT), in May said delivery of its Member's Mark pizzas—a hot 16-inch version costs about $9—would be available nationwide by the end of the month. Members can schedule a window or pay up for "express" delivery within three hours. Those pizza orders are turning into wins for Sam's, Walmart CFO John David Rainey said Tuesday. "You may hear that and think, 'Gosh, that can't be very economical for you to deliver a pizza to someone from a club,'" Rainey said at a conference, a transcript of which was made available by AlphaSense. "Here's the thing: The average basket size of a pizza delivery is over $100." Pizza is a competitive business, with entrants coming not only from the kind of places you might think—pizza chains, grocery stores selling frozen and other varieties—but also places like Casey's General Stores (CASY), which is currently promoting a BBQ brisket variety, and Costco (COST), which sells take-and-bake pies along with slices for snacking shoppers. For Sam's, which accounted for about 16% of Walmart's U.S. revenue in its last full year, the pies are driving sales of other, non-pizza, goods. (The company is seeing a similar effect with rotisserie chickens, executives have said.) "Members are taking advantage of the broad assortment that we have, and while we are getting a pizza delivered, providing general merchandise or other items to go along with that, which makes that eCommerce delivery very attractive from an economic perspective for us," Rainey said. Sam's Club makes big change to products as customers switch gears
Walmart's (WMT) Sam's Club has recently resonated well with consumers nationwide, despite growing competition and concerns about inflation and tariffs. In Walmart's first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that Sam's Club's net sales in the U.S. increased by almost 3% year-over-year, while membership income grew 9.6% due to growth in new members and renewal rates. Amid increased competition and in response to a growing consumer trend, Sam's Club has made a significant change to its food and beverage products. In 2022, the warehouse club pledged to remove certain ingredients that consumers may deem harmful from its Member's Mark food products by the end of 2025, while also focusing on items made through sustainable practices. Some ingredients Sam's Club has been striving to remove include artificial flavors, high-fructose corn syrup, aspartame, phthalates, and synthetic colors. "The Sam's Club member is at the center of everything we do, so as we continue to evolve the Member's Mark brand, we intend to develop items that are reflective of the ingredients, processes, and materials they want – and don't want – in their products," said Prathibha Rajashekhar, senior vice president of private brands and sourcing at Sam's Club, in a 2022 press release. Related: BJ's CEO warns customers of a harsh new reality in stores Now, so far in 2025,, Sam's Club claims it has banned 40 ingredients from 96% of its Member's Mark food and beverage products, and it plans to ban them from all products in this category by the end of the year, according to a recent press release. Sam's Club also said that it recently surveyed its members and found that 72% are "actively seeking minimally processed foods," while 90% said that they "either live or aspire to live a healthier lifestyle." "We take pride in the high-quality ingredients that go into our products, but what truly differentiates us are the ingredients we consciously leave out," said Sam's Club Chief Merchant Julie Barber in the release. The move from Sam's Club comes during a time when Americans across the country are increasingly becoming more health-conscious, a trend that skyrocketed after the Covid-19 pandemic. A recent survey by the International Food Information Council found that 79% of Americans said that they consider whether a food product is processed when deciding to purchase it. For example, seed oils - including canola, sunflower, and palm - have recently drawn scrutiny from consumers for contributing to inflammation in the body. The trend has pushed fast-food chain Steak n' Shake to remove these oils from its food. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services, has even vowed to ban artificial dyes from all U.S. food products by the end of the year. "For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent," said Kennedy in an April press release. "These poisonous compounds offer no nutritional benefit and pose real, measurable dangers to our children's health and development. That era is coming to an end." During an earnings call in February, PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta said there has been a "higher level of awareness" among American consumers about health and wellness, which is impacting sales. "We're seeing more conversation in social media about health and wellness, in general, and obviously, that's impacting consumption of food and consumption of beverages," said Laguarta. Even Kellogg CEO Gary Pilnick warned investors in May that the company's cereal category faced declining sales as consumers increasingly lean more towards new brands that focus more on health and nutrition.
