De'Aaron Fox offers injury update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, before the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs added All-Star point guard De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings, hoping that he would be the long-term running mate for Victor Wembanyama. Advertisement The pair played only five games together, going 2-3, before Wembanyama had his season ended early with a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis in his shoulder. A few weeks later, Fox had his season ended as well, undergoing surgery on his pinkie finger. In 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists, clearly needing to get used to his new team. He expects to use the offseason to settle into his role with his new teammates and is already playing five-on-five and has been cleared for contact. 'I'm doing well. The surgery went fine,' Fox told The Houston Chronicle. 'I've been cleared, so I played a little five-on-five, and I've done contact stuff, so I'll be ready for next year.' The Spurs gave up Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and four first-round draft picks to the Kings and Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal to land Fox, although several of those picks had protections on them, and one of them ended up not conveying to the Kings. Advertisement Before the trade, Fox asked the Kings to get a deal done and listed the Spurs as the only acceptable landing spot. With Wembanyama in town, San Antonio has become a premier destination, and Fox got in on the ground floor, expecting the team to find massive success in the next few years. Apathy and anger cloud USA team a year out from World Cup
Former USA goalkeeper Kasey Keller says he was embarassed by the USA's 4-0 loss to Switzerland. (Victor Decolongon) A run of four straight losses, including a 4-0 hammering from Switzerland on Wednesday, has left Mauricio Pochettino and his USA team feeling the wrath of critics a year out from the World Cup they will co-host. The USA head into their opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday having lost on home soil to Panama and Canada in the Nations League in March before friendly losses to Turkey and the debacle against the Swiss. Advertisement "I think it is the most embarrassed I have been for the US national team in a long time," said Kasey Keller, who played in goal for the USA 102 times between 1990 and 2007. While there were plenty of American fans venting similar feelings on social media after the loss, what will perhaps be more concerning for the US Soccer Federation is supporters voting with their feet and not attending games. There were thousands of empty seats in Nashville for the Switzerland defeat after poor turn-outs for March's games in Los Angeles. "There's just a sense of apathy around the United States men's program and I don't think that's a hot take," former striker Taylor Twellman told NBC Sports. Advertisement Alexi Lalas, a star of the USA team the last time they hosted a World Cup in 1994, has built a career in 'hot takes' for Fox Sports but even he was struggling to fire himself up for a Star Spangled rant after the latest disappointment. "I'm having a hard time even conjuring up that and that makes a little sad. In the past when I was angry at what was going on, I felt compelled to express it and now they are not even worth that, not worth me expressing how disappointing this is right now," he said on his podcast 'State of the Union'. Pochettino has been forced to field a largely second string squad in this month's games with the likes of Tim Weah and Weston McKennie on Club World Cup duty with Juventus while captain and talisman Christian Pulisic has opted to take some rest along with some other members of the first choice squad. That latter decision prompted fierce criticism from some ex-players, including Landon Donovan, the country's all-time joint top scorer who during commentary of Portugal's win in the UEFA Nations League hit out at the absentees. Advertisement "[Ronaldo is] 40 years old. He's played a long-ass season. He's tired. He's out there grinding. Hurt himself in the process, and I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off," he said. That led to a sarcastic reply on social media from Pulisic's father Mark who posted a reminder of Donovan's own 'sabbatical' from the USA team. - Pressure - But there is also pressure mounting on Pochettino, the Argentine former Tottenham Hotspur manager, who was appointed to the USA role in September. Advertisement The coach said he would take the blame for the showing against Switzerland where the USA were 4-0 down by half-time. "It's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain players, but we were never in the game," the Argentine said. While Pochettino's job may be safe, some are wondering if he might not need some assistance. "It looks like he doesn't know the team, it looks like he doesn't scout the players, has no idea of the pieces he has at his disposal," said former USA forward Hercules Gomez on You Tube. "The US Soccer Federation, why not place somebody who has some experience with the player pool to help Pochettino out because it looks like he has no idea who his players are? Legendary dirt track racer Scott Bloomquist's fatal plane crash deemed an ‘act of suicide'
Dirt track racing legend Scott Bloomquist's death in a 2024 plane crash likely was caused by 'the pilot's intentional flight into a building as an act of suicide,' according to a report issued this week by the National Transportation Safety Board. Bloomquist, a 2002 National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee, was the pilot and sole occupant of a a two-seat 1938 Piper J3 aircraft that crashed into a barn on his family's property Aug. 16 in Mooresburg, Tenn. He was 60. 'The pilot departed from a private airstrip and overflew his property,' states the NTSB's aviation investigation final report, which does not mention Bloomquist by name. 'The airplane subsequently impacted a barn adjacent to the airstrip. The airplane sustained substantial damage, and the fuselage was mostly consumed by the postimpact fire that ensued. 'The pilot was fatally injured. ... The autopsy report listed the cause of death as blunt force injuries and the manner of death as suicide.' According to the report, Bloomquist did not have a pilot's certificate. Bloomquist's family issued a statement to Fox Sports coinciding with the report's release. 'At this time, the family of Scott Bloomquist is not making any public statements regarding the plane crash or the recent NTSB findings,' the statement said. 'They are focused on supporting one another and respectfully request privacy as they navigate this difficult period. 'We appreciate your understanding and ask that the media refrain from further inquiries at this time.' Known for his long hair and tough-guy attitude, Bloomquist started his racing career at Corona Raceway in 1980 and is said to have won more than 600 races overall. Following Bloomquist's death, Bristol Motor Speedway president and manager Jerry Caldwell said the late driver was 'arguably the greatest dirt late model racer in the sport's history.' Bloomquist was in a motorcycle accident in March 2019 and suffered serious injuries to his right leg and hip that would cause complications for years afterward. In June 2023, Bloomquist told Dirt on Dirt that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but it had been caught early. He said that he was expected to make a full recovery after surgery and treatment.
