Manchester City will begin their FIFA Club World Cup in under three weeks. City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has stated that his club's goal is to win the tournament in the United States. To do that, Pep Guardiola will hope that his players return from the upcoming internationals healthy. One player who won't feature at the tournament for City is Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian international has had surgery on an Achilles issue, which has ruled him out of the tournament.

Mateo Kovacic will miss the FIFA Club World Cup.
Kovacic joins the list of players that gave their all for Manchester City.
In the end, the toll of the 24/25 season caught up to Mateo Kovacic. He made 42 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City. The Croatian international gave his all for his team. Kovacic also stepped up in Manchester City's hour of need. With Rodri out for the majority of the 24/25 campaign, Kovacic did all he could to fill the void. He was arguably Manchester City's unsung hero of the 24/25 season. But in the end, the toll of last season caught up to Kovacic.

Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji also suffered a similar fate to that of Mateo Kovacic earlier this season. They pushed their bodies to the limit before having to have surgery mid season. It seems that Kovacic may have suffered the same fate. The positive in Kovacic's situation is he now has the summer to rest and recover from surgery.
It is a blow for Manchester City to lose Mateo Kovacic for the FIFA Club World Cup. But he now gets the chance to rest, albeit not in the ideal circumstances. The hope is now that he can return in time for the early stages of the 25/26 season.

FIFA Club World Cup bracket: Schedule, groups for 2025 tournament Show Caption Hide Caption Timing of FIFA Club World Cup problematic for teams across the globe Seth Vertelney explains why the timing of the FIFA Club World Cup is sounding alarms for franchises across the globe. Sports Seriously The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is approaching, with the 32-team tournament featuring some of the biggest club teams in global soccer. The new format for the Club World Cup includes a major expansion, with the old version of the event featuring just seven teams in most editions. Now, though, the event will feature group-stage play akin to what most fans will recognize from the men's and women's World Cups. The path through the bracket will be tough for MLS's representatives. Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have a viable path out of their group, and LAFC (the final entrants to qualify) could do the same, but both will be up against it unless multiple European giants fall in the first round. The Seattle Sounders, meanwhile, will face newly-crowned Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in what is arguably the hardest group in the tournament. does Club World Cup bracket work? The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will work through a bracket familiar to any fan of international soccer. Much like the World Cup for national teams, the Club World Cup will start with a group stage, with the 32 participants divided into eight groups of four. Those groups will operate on a round-robin basis, with a given team playing the other members of the group once, and the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout round. That will leave 16 teams standing, and from there it's pretty simple: winners advance, losers go home. The knockout stages will progress from a round of 16 to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the tournament final on July 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. When does the FIFA Club World Cup start? The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will run from June 14 to July 13 at locations spread throughout the United States. Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are set play in the opening match, which will see the MLS contenders take on Egyptian club Al-Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, at 8 p.m. ET. The tournament final is scheduled to be held on July 13 at 3 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Man City and Wolverhampton Wanderers reach full agreement for long-term Man United target Rayan Ait-Nouri

Long-term Manchester United defensive target Rayan Ait-Nouri is set to complete his move to cross-town rivals Manchester City, who have reached a full agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ait-Nouri has been linked to United at various points of his career but needless to say, a transfer never materialised. Advertisement After Ruben Amorim took over as head coach, there were suggestions that United might target Ait-Nouri, who is highly familiar with the demands of the wing-back role—a position he has consistently impressed in at Wolves. However, United's January signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce made a move for Ait-Nouri highly unlikely, especially with other positions taking priority in the club's plans to strengthen the squad. Still, rumours linking Ait-Nouri to United never completely faded. However, as the Red Devils hesitated, City stepped in and swiftly made the Algerian their top transfer target. Earlier on Saturday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Ait-Nouri successfully completed his medical tests. Advertisement Romano indicated that the next step was for the 24-year-old to put pen to paper on a five-year contract until 2030. Now, Ben Jacobs has reported that Wolves and City have agreed a deal worth an initial €37m fee plus a further €6m in add-ons for Ait-Nouri. Jacobs also confirms that the player has done his medical. City will be hoping to announce Ait-Nouri's signing before they jet off to the United States to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup later this month. For United, it will be a bitter pill to swallow that their long-term target has ended up joining one of their biggest rivals. Ait-Nouri played 135 times for Wolves across the last five seasons in the English top-flight. Last term, he scored four goals and provided seven assists in 37 league appearances. Manchester City, Juventus Await PSG Standout to Make Major Decision Over Contract

PSG have a big call to make—and clubs like Manchester City are likely paying close attention: Is Gianluigi Donnarumma still their long-term solution in goal? He's under contract through 2026, but interest from top European sides is building. Since joining from AC Milan in 2021, Donnarumma has come through in big moments—making crucial saves and coming up big in penalty shootouts—but his time in Paris hasn't been without hiccups. Advertisement There have been some high-profile errors, including the infamous mistake against Real Madrid in the 2022 Champions League, that still raise questions about his reliability under pressure. Now, with PSG headed to the Champions League final, the spotlight is squarely on him again. A strong showing could solidify his place as the club's No. 1. If not, and with his contract winding down, other clubs will be ready to make a move. Could Manchester City swoop in for PSG standout?Football Italia reported on Saturday that Donnarumma's contract is winding down. Still, despite interest from Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Inter Milan, he plans to meet with PSG first to discuss a new deal. Advertisement His current contract runs until June 2026, but PSG have offered him a new deal with a much lower salary than the €10 million per season he was earning after leaving Milan in 2021. In his latest column for Ensemble PSG, Robin Bairner, the chief editor at Football Transfers, wrote about Donnarumma's future and whether PSG should offer him a new contract. 'There's a debate to be had about the No.1, although that's for another day. Despite shaky shot-stopping statistics overall this season, [Donnarumma has] been statistically poorer than Matvey Safanov. 'For example, his Champions League performances suggest that he's the perfect keeper for PSG. He's shown a capacity to raise his level for the big games, which has been precious, even vital, to the team's European progress. This should be enough to see him rewarded with a new deal.'
