In the end, the toll of the 24/25 season caught up to Mateo Kovacic. He made 42 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City. The Croatian international gave his all for his team. Kovacic also stepped up in Manchester City's hour of need. With Rodri out for the majority of the 24/25 campaign, Kovacic did all he could to fill the void. He was arguably Manchester City's unsung hero of the 24/25 season. But in the end, the toll of last season caught up to Kovacic. Advertisement Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji also suffered a similar fate to that of Mateo Kovacic earlier this season. They pushed their bodies to the limit before having to have surgery mid season. It seems that Kovacic may have suffered the same fate. The positive in Kovacic's situation is he now has the summer to rest and recover from surgery. It is a blow for Manchester City to lose Mateo Kovacic for the FIFA Club World Cup. But he now gets the chance to rest, albeit not in the ideal circumstances. The hope is now that he can return in time for the early stages of the 25/26 season.

The mistakes of last summer won't be repeated by Manchester City
There is a strong argument to be made that standing still in the transfer market last summer cost Manchester City. City only signed Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan ahead of the 24/25 season. The decision to back in the players that they had and who had achieved so much for the club had a detrimental impact on Pep Guardiola's side. That was clear to see as the 24/25 season unfolded as injuries, fatigue and a lack of legs all conspired against Pep Guardiola's side. Ilkay Gundogan and Savinho were the only players to arrive at Manchester City last summer. Heading into the summer transfer window it is a mistake that Manchester City can not make again. Listening to City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak speak it is clear that Manchester City won't be following the same path as the one they went down last summer. Manchester City should have been more aggressive last summer. Speaking with Chris Bailey in his annual end-of-season interview on City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak admitted that his club should have been more aggressive during last summer's transfer window. He admitted that the fact that they weren't was a contributing factor in Manchester City's poor 24/25 season. Speaking on the subject, Al-Mubarak said: 'When I look at the last 16, 17 odd years of being involved in this Club, so many different squads, and we've done it in a structured way over the years.' Advertisement 'This year is another year where, when I look back, last summer we probably should have been more aggressive in some of the changes we needed to do. We didn't do that, and that ended up costing us this year.' 'We already started the rebuild of this team in January. Normally, we like to do our business in the summer and only in case of emergency. A special need that comes up, do we actually go and do business in January? That's been our MO at least for the last seven or eight years. But this January, we had to act.' Manchester City's summer plans are already beginning to take off. What is already clear this summer is that Manchester City are determined to act swiftly and decisively in the summer transfer window. With the FIFA Club World Cup coming up, City are aiming to bring in new signings ahead of the tournament. But what they won't be doing is repeating the mistakes of last summer. Yes, Manchester City began their rebuild in January. Omar Marmoush, Nico, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah were all signed by City in January. But there is more work to do to rebuild Pep Guardiola's squad. Everything coming out of Manchester City indicates that they won't be standing still this summer. That lesson has been learned. A busy and crucial summer looms for Manchester City. But what is becoming clear is that the mistakes of last summer won't be repeated again. That fact stood out in Khaldoon Al-Mubarak's interview yesterday. The lessons learned over a disappointing 24/25 season can lead to Manchester City's next era of dominance. It now seems that is the path that City will be following over a crucial summer for the club.

The legend of Kevin De Bruyne continues to grow at Manchester City
Manchester City's Premier League fixture against Fulham tomorrow at Craven Cottage is likely the final game that Kevin De Bruyne will play for the club. It is unlikely that De Bruyne will play for the club at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in June. We saw the Manchester City legend say goodbye to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening. That farewell was fit for a club legend, and his status at the club was clear to see based on the outpouring of emotion on display on Tuesday evening. But just when you think that the legend of Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City couldn't grow any larger, a new revelation has come out today. It further solidifies De Bruyne's status at the club. It also shows that the Belgian international gave everything both physically and mentally to the cause for his club. Arguably, the biggest moment for Kevin De Bruyne came during the 22/23 season. Manchester City took on Real Madrid in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. The first leg of the tie came at the Bernabeu. Pep Guardiola's side needed a result to set themselves up for the second leg at the Etihad. They left the Bernabeu with a 1-all draw, and the rest is history. Kevin De Bruyne scored the equaliser on that famous night as he scored a second half stunner. It was a goal that summed up the genius and quality of De Bruyne. But the goal and De Bruyne's performance came in trying circumstances. The fact that De Bruyne performed so well under duress further enhances his legend status at Manchester City. City's last visit to the Santiago Bernabeu. Kevin De Bruyne with one of the best goals in Champions League history. 🪄🇧🇪 — Amos Murphy (@AmosMurphy_) April 9, 2024 In an interview with Kevin De Bruyne spoke on the circumstances that surrounded him in the lead up to that famous night. He revealed that his family was dealing with tragedy leading up the famous Champions League semi-final tie against Real Madrid during the 22/23 season. Speaking with De Bruyne explained: 'It's probably one of the best weeks and the worst that I'd ever had in my life. I remember we played on Tuesday, and my wife's grandfather, who was really close to us, was dealing with cancer.' 'Obviously he was not really good, and I think a lot of people already said goodbye. I was basically the only one who didn't say goodbye, so on Sunday, I flew to Belgium to say goodbye.' 'He was in really bad pain, then on Monday I had to fly here, train in the morning, then fly to Madrid and then on the Monday evening he died.' 'It was a really emotional time, then obviously the next Sunday, I had to go before the other Madrid game on Sunday or Monday to attend the funeral.' 'Then, at the time of his funeral, my grandmother died, so I had to drive five hours to say goodbye to her. It was an absolute mess.' 'I just played on pure emotion, no sleep.' 'There's that clip where I got angry with Pep in the Madrid game because I was all over the place.' 'I did what I had to do to play football.' Kevin De Bruyne's legacy at Manchester City is already established. That is never going to change. But his revelation with about the circumstances that surrounded him before arguably his greatest triumph for Manchester City speaks volumes about the mental strength and fortitude of Kevin De Bruyne. He put personal tragedy all to one side to do what was needed for his team. It was a performance for the ages, under the most trying of circumstances. It just further solidifies De Bruyne's status as a Manchester City legend. He gave it all for the club with physically and mentally. The image below is perhaps the best illustration of this.
