‘Glitz, Glam, and a Damn Good Time' Review: A Wealth of Amusement
In 'Glitz, Glam, and a Damn Good Time,' however, Jennifer Wright argues that those late-19th-century parties were about more than conspicuous consumption. They allowed a smart, glamorous extrovert to shed some of the stuffy constraints of her era, acquire a social power that would increase her family's prosperity and be a model for others.
Marion Graves Anthon, or Mamie, as she was known, was a barely literate and rather plain young woman whose family had fallen on hard times. Her only assets were her natural wit and aplomb, but in a twist worthy of Edith Wharton, these were enough for her to snare a suitor who, according to his own family history, had been born 'with a silver spoon in his mouth big enough to be called a soup ladle.' As a young man, Stuyvesant Fish had rejected his patrician father's choice of law as a suitable career and went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad. Mamie enraptured this rather dull, Columbia-educated man, and in 1876 they married. They were a devoted couple. 'He thought she was a hoot,' Ms. Wright tells us, 'and she loved that he was a constantly amused audience for her jokes and adventures.'
The Fish fortune multiplied. But while 'Stuyvesant seemed to sense that railroads were going to be huge,' Ms. Wright suggests that 'Mamie seemed to understand that extroverted, exciting women who loved the spotlight were the future.'

‘Weapons' Poised To Upset ‘Freakier Friday' At Weekend Box Office
Julia Garner and Josh Brolin's horror thriller Weapons is projected to upset Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan's comedy 'Freakier Friday' at the domestic box office this weekend. Both films are new in theaters this weekend and are delivering a one-two punch to The Fantastic Four: First Steps to knock the Disney-Marvel Studios film out of the No. 1 spot after two weeks. Directed by Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger, Weapons is projected by Deadline to make $38 million from 3,202 North American theaters though Sunday, with an estimated $17 million of that total coming from Friday's box office — which includes $5.7 million in Thursday previews. Meanwhile, Freakier Friday — the long-awaited Disney sequel to the 2003 body switch comedy starring Curtis and Lohan as mother and daughter— is projected by Deadline to gross $30 million from 3,975 North American theaters. Released by Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema, Weapons' projected gross is surprising, especially since it's an R-rated film, which limits its potential audience. On top of that, Weapons was projected to finish behind the PG-rated Freakier Friday by most top industry publications in its opening weekend. While Deadline had the films neck-and-neck with projections for each to open with $30 million in domestic ticket sales, The Hollywood Reporter forecast a $28 million opening for Freakier Friday and $25 million opening for Weapons. Box Office Pro, meanwhile, pegged a $35 million to $45 million opening frame for Freakier Friday and had Weapons coming in second with a projected take of $25 million to $30 million domestically. Deadline said Freakier Friday made $12 million on its opening day on Friday, including Thursday previews. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Slides To No. 3 Following a disastrous 67% drop in business from its opening weekend to its second frame last week, Disney and Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps is stumbling to the No. 3 spot on the domestic chart his weekend. After a $5 million Friday from 3,600 North American venues, Deadline is projecting a $16 million to $18 million third weekend for The Fantastic Four. If the projection holds, it will up the film's running domestic tally to $231 million to $233 million for the weekend. Universal Studios and DreamWorks Animation's animated adventure The Bad Guys 2 is projected by Deadline to earn $10.5 million from 3,860 North American theaters this weekend. If the forecast holds, it will bring the film's running tally to $43.5 million. Paramount Pictures' reboot/sequel of the comedy film series The Naked Gun is projected by Deadline to earn $8.1 million in its second weekend from 3,363 locations. If the projection holds, it will boost the Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson action comedy's running domestic tally to $32.4 million since the film's Aug. 1 opening. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend with the most recent numbers as they become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.

Take-Two lifts annual bookings forecast on 'Mafia', 'Borderlands' launches
By Zaheer Kachwala (Reuters) -Take-Two Interactive raised its annual bookings forecast on Thursday, betting on strong demand for its new "Mafia" and "Borderlands" titles, sending its shares up 5% in extended trading. The firm stuck to the May 26 launch date for its highly awaited "Grand Theft Auto VI," which is expected to generate billions of dollars within weeks of its release. Take-Two is banking on "Mafia: The Old Country", "Borderlands 4" and its core sports titles to drive growth in the absence of "Grand Theft Auto VI" against the backdrop of industry-wide struggles with challenging economic conditions. The company's executives said on a post-earnings conference that the U.S.'s tariff policy has created some risk and will lead consumers to become more careful and selective with spending. Tariffs have also led to a hike in console and hardware prices as manufacturers grapple with higher raw material costs. The company projected bookings of between $6.05 billion and $6.15 billion for its fiscal year 2026, compared with its prior forecast of between $5.9 billion and $6 billion. The delay of "Grand Theft Auto VI" to the next fiscal year has put more pressure on Take-Two's annual sports launches and AAA games. Competition within the industry is also intense, with the launch of premium titles such as Sony's "Ghost of Yotei" and Electronic Arts "Battlefield 6" later this year set to ratchet up the battle for gamer dollars. The period from September to December is a lucrative period for the gaming industry as seasonal sales and new product launches typically drive strong sales for publishers. Take-Two reported first-quarter bookings of $1.42 billion, beating estimates of $1.31 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. This was due to the strong performance of its mobile portfolio, executives said.
