Oman women gear up for Bahrain T20I series

Observer01-05-2025
MUSCAT: Women's cricket takes centre stage in Muscat as the Oman women's national team hosts Bahrain in a three-match T20 International series beginning May 2 at the Oman Cricket Academy grounds in Al Amerat.
The series promises to be a fiercely contested battle between two emerging teams in the Gulf region, with Oman determined to make a strong statement on home soil.
All matches will begin at 8 am on May 2, 3, and 5, setting the stage for a spirited return of national women's team after a gap of more than a year.
The Oman squad, captained by Priyanka Mendonca and backed by a blend of seasoned players and exciting new talent, is looking to translate months of intense preparation into on-field success.
Head coach Desmond Berhardt is confident in the team's readiness. Ahead of the series, he said: 'Following the conclusion of a successful domestic league, a pool of 35 talented players was selected based on their performance. These athletes then participated in a rigorous two-month training camp, from which the final team of 16 was chosen for the upcoming bilateral series."
He added: 'The current team represents an exciting phase of transition, blending the experience of long-standing senior players (who have been part of the system for 8–10 years) with the fresh energy of several promising teenage debutants. It's a well-rounded side, boasting solid and experienced batters, a diverse bowling attack with plenty of variation, and a few capable all-rounders."
The coach said: 'This group of players is incredibly enthusiastic about returning to competitive T20I cricket after over a year. They are truly looking forward to representing Oman and are determined to perform well. I also want to express our sincere gratitude to Oman Cricket for their ongoing commitment to the growth of the women's game in the country.'
Oman women's team last played T20 internationals at the 2024 ACC Women's Premier Cup, facing UAE, China, and Japan. In total, they have played 21 T20Is over the past five years, recording 7 wins, 13 losses, and 1 no result.
Oman squad: Priyanka Mendonca (captain), Fiza Javed (vice-captain), Hina Javed, Hira Javed, Jayadhanya Gunasekar, Sameera Khan, Cynthia Saldanha (wk), Trupti Pawde, Alifiya Syed, Saahana Jeelany, Lujaina Ali, Afida Aftab, Amanda D'Costa, Areeba Mughal, Pia Sharma, Disha Pradeep. Oman set to face cricket heavyweights India and Pakistan in UAE

Muscat – Oman will take a historic step in their cricket journey this September when they make their maiden appearance in the 2025 Men's Asia Cup, to be staged in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Drawn in Group A alongside defending champions India, Pakistan and hosts UAE, the national team players, under head coach Duleep Mendis, will get a rare opportunity to test themselves against some of the biggest names in world cricket. The eight-team tournament to be played in T20I format features the five ACC full-member nations – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – along with three Associate qualifiers – UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. Oman booked their berth by finishing as runners-up in the 2024 ACC Men's Premier Cup, a strong campaign that underscored the side's growing reputation in Asian cricket. Oman have also built an impressive record in the shortest format on the global stage, being the only associate Asian team having qualified for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup three times – in 2016, 2021 and 2024 – with their 2016 debut highlighted by a memorable win over Ireland. For Mendis, the Asia Cup is a landmark opportunity his players must fully embrace. 'This is a wonderful opportunity for Oman to play in the Asia Cup alongside Test-playing nations,' said the Sri Lankan great. Mendis, who also serves as the Chief Development Officer & Head Coach of Oman Cricket (OC) added: 'It's not every day you get to compete against the big boys – India and Pakistan. Every Omani cricketer dreams of moments like this, and our players should seize it with both hands and give their maximum. 'In T20 cricket, it's anybody's game. We are preparing well, and plan to arrange pre-tour matches against good opposition teams. Our focus is on doing well in the Asia Cup before hosting the T20 World Cup qualifiers in Oman.' Oman Cricket (OC) treasurer Alkesh Joshi hailed the team's qualification as the result of years of dedication and strategic development. 'Qualifying to play alongside five full-member Test nations is a testament to the quality of our squad and the work Oman Cricket has put in over the years,' Joshi said. 'We are delighted to be in the same group as India and Pakistan. Many of our players have grown up watching the greats from these countries, and playing against them will be a massive learning experience.' Joshi added: 'Appearing in three ICC Men's T20 World Cups is something we can all be proud of, and having Oman's name on a stage watched by hundreds of millions gives us a chance to showcase the quality of cricket we're building here.' The senior OC official said: 'We have an exciting support team led by coach Mendis and newly appointed deputy head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni, and we are grateful to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for its unwavering support.' 'We hope our fans turn out in large numbers to cheer for the national team when we take the field against India, Pakistan and the UAE,' he added. Now, with the Asia Cup stage set, the players are preparing to give their all – and, in the unpredictable world of T20I cricket, perhaps spring a few surprises against the continent's giants in a format where, as Mendis reminds his players, 'T20 is anybody's game.'

A seasoned cricketing mind and former first-class cricketer, Kulkarni brings with him over two decades of elite coaching experience and a deep understanding of the game, having contributed significantly to Indian domestic cricket and International assignments. A former Mumbai stalwart, Kulkarni played first-class cricket from 1985 to 2002, sharing the dressing room with legends such as Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. He also boasts an illustrious record with seven Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup titles with Mumbai, as a player and coach then. He was also named among the probable squad in India's 1987 World Cup squad. His coaching portfolio spans across top Indian domestic teams including Mumbai, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Under his guidance, Mumbai lifted both the Ranji Trophy and the Deodhar Trophy, while West Zone emerged victorious under his strategic leadership. Sulakshan, a gritty batter and a elite coach, has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of numerous international stars such as Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Avishkar Salvi. With over 20 years of coaching experience for National, International and IPL teams, Sulakshan Kulkarni's appointment underscores Oman Cricket's commitment to building a strong and competitive team structure with solid backroom staff led by Duleep Mendis ahead of key international fixtures such as the ICC EAP Asia Qualifier Final and the on-going cycle of the ICC CWC League 2, both of which are a step to the T20 World Cup 2026 and Cricket World Cup 2027 respectively. Oman Cricket extends a warm welcome to Kulkarni and looks forward to his valuable contribution in elevating the performance and development of our national cricket team.
