#SHOWBIZ: Karyawan: Stop exploiting artistes for ratings and monetary gain
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Artistes' Association (Karyawan) has urged the public not to be alarmed by a series of fake videos containing "negative news" about artistes, including prominent figures such as Datuk M. Nasir and Datuk David Arumugam.
Its president, Datuk Freddie Fernandez, said that these videos were created by irresponsible parties who falsely depicted these artistes as seriously ill or impoverished.
He said: "None of these claims are true. This is a very worrying trend on social media. The people who created such videos are sick, fabricating stories about respected and popular artistes just to gain views and make money."
Fernandez added that the videos employed fake voices and images generated by AI technology.
"More worryingly, there is also content that, at first glance, appears to be shocking news about artistes, but when clicked, it redirects viewers to pages selling various products."
Fernandez highlighted that the names and images of the artistes were used without their permission, violating their privacy and human rights.
"This is a most immoral, fraudulent exploitation of artistes' rights. It can create public confusion and panic, besides damaging the reputation of artistes."
Fernandez said that Karyawan has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to monitor and block fake content, as well as prosecute those responsible.
"Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook need to be more strict in monitoring content uploaded on their platforms," he said.
"We encourage the public to report fake videos. This will lead to the immediate suspension or blocking of the culprits' channels. It is our responsibility to ensure that our digital space is healthier and free from scams."
Fernandez urged all artistes to defend the dignity of their peers.
"And to all Malaysians, do not easily believe everything that goes viral, for a lot of it could be fake news. Let's work together to put a stop to malicious individuals who slander artistes."

Aidiladha weekend sees uptick in illegal crossings at Sungai Golok
RANTAU PANJANG: Droves of Malaysians, especially from Kelantan, have illegally crossed into Thailand via Sungai Golok, during the long Hari Raya Aidiladha weekend. It is understood that a large number of people — many of them young adults — would use the illegal jetties nestled between riverside houses along Sungai Golok, which runs along the border between here in Kelantan and the southern Thai town that bears the river's name. "It cannot be denied that a majority of Malaysians go to Sungai Golok to visit relatives, but some might take the opportunity to go there for entertainment," said the sources. A local parking attendant, identified only as Pak Lah, sadi the festive period saw a surge of people illegally crossing into Thailand. "They usually come in groups and will cross late at night or before sunrise. "Some return before dawn, while others stay until the next day," he said, adding that many are drawn by the nightlife and entertainment in Sungai Golok. Pak Lah said the risk of arrest or being fined did not deter them. "These people know the risks, but they are still willing to take the chance. "They believe if they go at the right time, they can avoid the authorities," he said. Checks at several illegal jetties here today found many groups crossing at night or in the early morning to avoid detection by the authorities. Many cars could be seen parked near jetties, where boats were moored waiting for customers. Authorities had warned that illegal crossings not only had legal consequences but also posed safety risks.

A case of elderly ‘Puan Sri' who is also Datuk Seri felt ‘entitled' to park her car in neighbour's porch
'I AM a Puan Sri! I also (personally) have a Datuk Seri title'. One wonders if those acquired titles allows a person to behave in a certain manner, including the right to park in a neighbour's porch! In a video that has been making the rounds on social media courtesy of Penang Indian Networks Facebook page, an elderly lady is seen taking umbrage at being asked to move the vehicle. While details of the incident remain sketchy, it does highlight a very negative trait among some Malaysians – that of throwing their weight around because they belong to the 'titled' class. That this matriarch was further flexing her entitled muscle by pulling on her police 'cable' to sort out matters further paints her in an unflattering light. The video which has since garnered 7.4K likes, 4.9K comments, 1.9K shares and 1.3 million views at the time of writing can be watched here. Many were unimpressed by the manner in which this lady threw her weight about by claiming she and her husband were titled individuals. That this even came with parking privileges surprised more than a few. One commenter even applauded this lady's energetic performance in giving an 'ala-TED Talk' lecture! The cable pulling with the cops also left a bad impression of this aunty who is clearly used to having things her own way even though she claimed 'we're decent people'. However, a few cautioned that nobody actually knows what sparked the confrontation. There are always two sides to the story. A few things this video brings up. First and foremost, the act of parking in neighbour's porch is a no-no (not to mention parking in front of someone's main gate). In Malaysia, parking in a neighbour's porch is generally illegal under the Road Transport Act 1987. Specifically, Section 48(1) states that any driver causing an obstruction or inconvenience to other road users is liable for a fine and/or imprisonment. Parking in a way that blocks access to a neighbour's property or obstructs the road falls under this category. Obviously, owning a title does not confer immunity from it. Secondly, the details of what caused this quarrel is unknown. But this video highlights the need for proper decorum and civility as anything and everything can now be captured on today's smart phone. Nevertheless, this elderly aunty's boasting of titles and belligerently claiming 'you can be from China, I'm from London' has painted an incredibly poor picture of her regardless of what sparked the confrontation. 'We aren't loafers' she can be heard proclaiming loudly, but this clip has made her look even worse. Online infamy is surely not what she bargained for. – June 8, 2025
