Letter near dead 18-year-old leads to accused killer, FL cops say. Man sentenced

The burned body of an 18-year-old woman was found in a field with a pile of items used to light her body on fire — including a letter that identified her accused killer, Florida authorities said. John Leonard Bowen, 49, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering with evidence, and a judge sentenced him to life in prison following the death of Coyoete Kathren Cheyenne Turner in September 2023, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office announced June 12. Bowen's attorney declined to comment to McClatchy News on June 13. Bowen, a convicted sex offender, was in a relationship with Turner's aunt, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office told McClatchy News. Turner used to live with her aunt and Bowen, who was convicted of sex crimes against a child in 1994, according to an arrest report and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Deputies said they received a call from a citizen about a body in a peanut field on Sept. 3, 2023, and they found the remains of a young woman who had been burned, making it hard to identify her, McClatchy News previously reported. She didn't have any obvious wounds pointing to how she had died, but she had bruising on her face and burns on the upper half of her body, deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office wrote in an arrest report. Deputies said they found burned garbage underneath the woman that had been used to light the fire, including a coloring book, a package of diapers and a bag of trash. But they also found a letter and an envelope, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators went to the address on the envelope and learned Bowen, then 47, was living there but hadn't updated his sex offender registration with his current address, deputies said. They told him to come to the station to update his registration soon, according to the report. As investigators worked to identify the victim, the sheriff's office posted on Facebook about the discovery of an unidentified body, prompting Turner's mother to call law enforcement, according to deputies. She told investigators she hadn't heard from her daughter in 24 hours, deputies said. Fingerprints confirmed the victim was the missing 18-year-old, according to the report. When Bowen went to the sheriff's office Sept. 7 to update his sex offender registration, he confirmed to law enforcement he had falsified his address, and he was arrested in connection with violating his registration requirements, deputies said. Investigators said they asked him about Turner as well, and he changed his story before eventually telling them he was there when she died. But he tried to implicate others, saying someone else got behind the wheel of his car and ran her over, according to the report. From his statements, investigators said they pieced together that Bowen struck Turner with his car, and while she was unconscious, he choked her and engaged in sex acts with her body. Then to conceal what happened, he tried to light her body on fire using items from his car, including the key piece of mail, deputies said. He was seen on surveillance footage at a nearby gas station shortly before 2 a.m. changing his clothes in his car before going inside the convenience store, according to investigators. The medical examiner concluded Turner's cause of death was trauma, according to the report. 'How can I trust people when it's our friends and families that done this to our family?' Turner's mother, Eleanor Houston, told WJAX in November 2023. She told WTLV her daughter loved everyone and 'wanted to have a beautiful life.' Columbia County is in north Florida on the border of Georgia.

Air India Flight Makes Emergency Landing Due to Bomb Threat 1 Day After Fatal Plane Crash

An Air India flight had to circle back to Phuket, Thailand to make an emergency landing on Friday, June 13, following reports of a bomb threat A note was found in the aircraft's bathroom, per a post on the airport's Facebook page Authorities have since confirmed that no explosives or suspicious objects had been discovered and the emergency has now been called offAn Air India flight has had to be diverted following reports of a bomb threat, one day after hundreds of people died in a tragedy involving one of the airline's planes. On Friday, June 13, flight AI 379 was heading from Phuket to New Delhi in India when it had to make an emergency landing back on the Thai island, per a Phuket International Airport - HKT Facebook post, which was reshared on the Airports of Thailand (AOT) page. AOT is a public company that manages multiple international airports in the country. The Facebook post stated that the pilot had been "informed to bring the aircraft back to Phuket Airport" after a bomb threat note was found inside a bathroom on the aircraft, which had been carrying 156 passengers and eight crew members. "Authorities have confirmed that no explosives or suspicious objects were found," the post stated. Monchai Tanode, director of Phuket International Airport, said of the incident, "We received a report of a bomb threat written inside the aircraft's bathroom, so the pilot informed the control tower and decided to divert the flight to Phuket International Airport after circling to burn off fuel," per the BBC. Tanode added during a press conference, "Police took suspects for questioning but could not clearly say who wrote the note," Reuters reported. There were initially three suspects, who have all since been cleared, the news agency noted, citing Air India official Debasish Choudhury. According to data from flight tracker Flightradar24, the aircraft had taken off from Phuket at 9:30 a.m. local time, before being diverted back to the airport, and later taking off for New Delhi at 4:28 p.m. Air India and Phuket International Airport didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for comment. The incident came a day after Air India Flight AI171 crashed on the afternoon of Thursday, June 12, just after takeoff from Ahmedabad in India. The jet had been bound for London's Gatwick airport. Citing health officials, CNN reported that at least 290 people have now been pronounced dead. The outlet noted that the plane crashed into a hostel for doctors. The airline confirmed in a statement on X that there was a "sole survivor" out of the 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. The airline did not identify the living passenger beyond saying they are a British citizen "of Indian origin" who is being "treated in a hospital." However, multiple local reports have since identified the man as 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. After the crash, the airline shared a post on X confirming "the passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national." Fact Check: AI-generated image shows Trump on Epstein's jet with underage girls

Claim: A photo shared online authentically depicts U.S. President Donald Trump on an airplane with underage girls. Rating: An image being shared online in June 2025 purported to depict U.S. President Donald Trump on board an airplane surrounded by five young blonde girls. Many users sharing the alleged photograph pointed out the girls are underage, with others ruminating how their looks are reminiscent of Trump's daughter Ivanka. The image was shared widely on X (archived, archived, archived), Threads (archived), Facebook (archived) and TikTok (archived), with some of the posts (archived) further alleging that the airplane in question belonged to disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein (now deceased). The image shared online purporting to show Donald Trump alongside underage girls, allegedly on Epstein's private jet, is fake. While there are authentic images of Trump alongside Epstein, plenty of false images have spread widely on the internet, including other fake photos of Trump with underage girls. The specific image in question has been shared online since at least 2023. It appeared in posts on meme websites Imgur and 9GAG in April 2023 before spreading to social media. In January 2024, Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo even apologized for sharing fake images of Trump with underage girls, including the one in question. The actor wrote, "Sorry Folks. Apparently these images are AI fakes. The fact Trump was on Epstein's plane and what Epstein was up to is not." Indeed, the photograph was generated with artificial intelligence (AI). The AI-detection tool Hive Moderation reported a 99.8% chance the image was made using AI and was thoroughly debunked when it originally circulated. While the image was debunked during its original circulation, Trump's public feud with Elon Musk, who posted on social media that Trump appeared in Epstein's files in June 2025, brought the image back to prominence and is likely to blame for the proliferation of new claims. Snopes previously debunked fake images of Trump and Epstein with a minor as well as Trump and Epstein together on a private jet, though there have been authentic images of the pair together.
